Pat Metheny
Rooster_Ties replied to 7/4's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Allen, is there any chance you could clarify things (at least for me, anyway) by mentioning some jazz guitar players with a sound that you do like?? (That's a serious question.) From the sound of things, that's not very many current players (it would seem). But over the last, say, 50 years or so -- please name one guitar player from each decade with a sound that you generally like (even if what they play with that sound isn't exactly to your liking). Five names, that's all I need from you Allen -- to better understand where you're comin' from. -
Exactly. Who could possibly be offended?? People who were for the war?? People who were against?? I have yet to see any explaination, that in any way clarifies how anyone could be offended.

Yup, that's the same guy -- he's originally from Kansas City. (I edited the quote up above, that I used from Spontoon's column, to include his Pender's first name.)

Here's some more... SOURCE
-
OK, I found it. And wouldn't you know, it was a search hit on one of Spontoonious' jazz columns!!! SOURCE I'll see what else I can turn up...

There was an article about this in the Kansas City Star, just within the past year or two -- maybe on the 20th or 25th aniversary of the crime?? It was long before I lived here, but my memory is that somehow the trumpeter in Conan O'Brien's band, was a long-time standmate of his (they had a regular band together here in KC, maybe as co-leaders??). That trumpeter is Mark Pender, but for the life of me -- I can't seem to find anything out in any of the usual places I go searching for stuff like this. Spontoonious will be around shortly, and I'm sure he'll know the name, and maybe even a story or two to share. I'll look a bit more -- maybe I'll find something yet.

In that case, I'll buy two!!!

Best thing to do (IMHO), is probably let everyone move up one slot (rather than giving your slot to someone else). That would be the most fair way to do it, for those who have been waiting on the list for quite a while. Also, Aftab, you might want to add your name to the list again, just in case you feel like having another go at it in a couple years. (And if you don't put your name in now, who knows how long the list will be by then. )

Here's an interview with Pat from 1995, where he mentions Monte Muza. Probably one you've read, Eric, since it's from the local Kansas City jazz mag, JAM. Link: JAM talks with the Grammy-winning guitarist about KC roots, global notoriety, and jazz: past, present and future. I think the interviewer is probably Pat's brother Mike (who is a trumpet-player), especially judging from the last question in the interview. Pat was the editor of JAM Magazine for many years, and he was usually the one who did all the long-form interviews. Also... Link: Another Metheny interview that mentions Monte Muza. This one appears to be from 1999 or so. -
I have Expansions, Extensions, and Asante on disc, but haven't ever heard Cosmos (well, other than the three or so tunes that were bonus tracks on Asante). Can anybody with the LP's provide the timings for all the Cosmos tracks?? I'd like to add up all the time for everything, and see what's left over -- in terms of the potential for additional unreleased material. I've got the most recent "Complete BN Discography" if anybody needs me to type up any session info -- including the Cosmos session(s?). (But there isn't any timing info in the discography.) Thanks!!

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Well, I had lunch with Spontoonious today, and we done spun through all the tracks on the beta-versions of my two BFT discs this afternoon. Came to the conclusion that there were a number of tracks that I might maybe be able to live without, at least this time around. Enough that I think I maybe'll be boiling this thing down to just one disc. And actually, the total time for all the cuts that I really, REALLY want, is now down to 87:06. So, if I can just figure out where to cut another 8 to 8½ minutes, I'll have it!!! Don't worry, I'm saving the "rejects", and I may even use a few of them the next time that I'm lucky enough to get to put together another BFT. -
Anybody else having trouble accessing AAJ today?

I do too. Sometimes even I'm the one playing Welcome Wagon (click). More often than not, it's really nice guys like AfricaBrass that roll out the welcome mat. (But many others are certainly welcoming too.) Sure, we haze some newbies, here and there. But more often than not, the ones that get hazed are those with some kind of attitude problem, right out the gate. Or in a few cases, people who's tastes run towards the lighter, or even sometimes "smoother" side of jazz. (And of course, people that post stuff for sale as one of their very first few posts. ) But all in all, I think this is a pretty friendly board, even to strangers. Anyone really think otherwise?? -

'fraid I can't help with the discography (wish I could), but allow me to be the first to roll out the official "Organissimo Forums" welcome-mat for you --- especially since you're a newbie who isn't trying to sell us the Brooklyn Bridge. Take a load off your feet, buy a drink, and tell us a bit about yourself. -- Rooster T.

Amen to that!!! Never thought we'd see these on CD, let alone so lovingly done in terms of the packaging and notes. Now if only Water would release the two Kenny Cox BN's from that same time period.
