  1. She'll just be conviced that you hang out with other psychos like yourself. She'd be right!!!
  2. The thing I love about this poll is that I can show the results to my wife, and claim the size of my collection is perfectly normal!!! (At least by Organissimo standards. )
  3. Probably about 2,000, maybe closer to 2,400. But not all jazz -- not by a long shot. About 800 jazz. Maybe 1,000 classical. About 400 rock. Those are rough guesses. I own less than 100 LP's.
  4. I'm about to send you another PM about... Mal Waldron-Black Glory $12.00
  5. I was adopted, and my biological mother was an unwed teenage mother (seriously, on both counts). So I would imagine the likelyhood of me having some unknown number of brothers and/or sisters out there is pretty good. I'm clearly White, but who knows -- perhaps either my biological mother or biological father has since had children with someone who is Black. Which means... (wait for it!!! ) I could easily have a half-brother, who's half-a-Brotha!!!
  6. OK, I was listening to samples of this disc at Amazon (click here). And the tune "Littlest One of All" came on, and damn -- I know this tune from somewhere. But a quick check of the AMG says that it's only been recorded under that name here on the Hicks album, and also on a Freddie Hubbard album (click here). Those two are the same tune, but damn if I don't know this thing from somewhere else (cuz I don't have that Freddie disc, nor the Hicks). So I guess it was under some other name. Where else is this tune from???? Some classic BN recording, I think, but which one???
  7. Thanks!!! Duh... John Hicks - "John Hicks". Any opinions about this disc???
  8. Looking for an AMG review and maybe some on-line samples, and half.com says the album is called "Richard Davis", which is clearly wrong. Wait, it looks like half.com says the album is by Richard Davis, and is called "John Hicks". Whatever. What is this thing really??? Screwed up listing on half.com Thanks!!! ============ ============ ============ ============ OK, I was listening to samples of this disc at Amazon (click here). 9. Guys, let's not stink up another thread with this stuff. Take it outside!!
  10. Is it wrong to hope that there were some Brothers (and even some Sisters) among us on the board?? That's a serious question. After all, isn't diversity a good thing?? Maybe it's time to bump this thread up again... Link: Race and Racial Interaction, in America and beyond, How to foster more/better communication?
  11. You know, since the Internet took off -- I really haven't been reading a regular Jazz mag like I used to 10, 15 years ago. I pick up Downbeat every now and then, and maybe flip through Jazz Times and the other one (I forget the name, the other jazz glossy). So, I'm not so sure that actual "published" jazz writers have near the influence they maybe used to have. And frankly, the jazz writers that have the biggest influence on me are people like Sangry, and Chuck, and a good handful of the other people I read here on this board. I'm not saying the people here have the "big-numbers" influence, but I reckon the "big numbers" influence people are probably influencing much fewer numbers these days. And hell, maybe whoever writes the most jazz reviews for the AMG -- they might be a HUGE influence as well. And if that's true, then probably Scott Yanow is as "influential" as anybody.
  12. I watched off-and-on last season, until the best of the bunch (can't remember her name) got booted out in 4th place. Haven't watched it since. PS: Quick google says that it was La Toya London who got booted long before she should have. She's the one in the upper right-hand corner.
  13. Sweet Jesus, only an $8.00 cover to see Sam Rivers!!!
  14. I could probably eat a whole box of the Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies -- all in one sitting, if I didn't stop myself. I've eaten half-a-box in one sitting before, more times that I should probably admit (that's 13 cookies, if I remember right). Got my vote!!! My wife's a Thin Mint gal, so no battles over favorite cookies.
  15. Sent a PM earlier about Jacknife and Passing Ships. Thanks!!
  16. uncalled for, IMO.
  17. I might add that I bought the Cherry, in part, because of its relative inexpensiveness -- only $30 for two CD's. I can't remember if I had ever heard any of the material before, but I was familiar with Cherry from having bought the Ornette Atlantic box a short time earlier. But the Mclean and Hill sets were both purchased primarily for the sidemen (not the leaders), since I was largely unfamiliar with Mclean and nearly totally unfamiliar with Hill at the time. I think I'd heard maybe two dates with McLean, at most --- and I'd probably only heard Point of Departure before. Took to the Cherry quickly, but didn't really bond with either the McLean or the Hill sets until a good two or three years later. Sure, I liked 'em as soon as I got 'em, but I don't think the music really 'sunk in' until I'd listened to them quite a bit, particularly the Hill.
  18. #1: 30-Sep-94 - Don Cherry #2: 23-Jan-95 - Jackie McLean #3: 12-May-95 - Andrew Hill B-) I just happen to still have the receipts stashed in the Mosaic boxes these sets came in.
  19. The alternate of Goodbye To Childhood is worth its weight in gold, IMHO. It was previously only available on the Herbie BN boxset. Includes two other alternates as well.
  20. Here's an interesting article on Carson's later years (I'm assuming it's interesting, as I haven't had the chance to read it yet), from the a 2002 issue of AARP's magizine. I'm posting a link to a page with scans of the articles (actual pages). They're pretty big, and if I hot-link them, perhaps they'll take 'em down. In any case, here they are... Clicky Linky Thingie, then scroll down for links to the actual pages of the article.
  21. A quick Google says (in no particular order)... 1993: Johnny Carson (talk-show host), Arthur Mitchell (dancer-choreographer), Georg Solti (conductor), Stephen Sondheim (composer-lyricist), Marion Williams (gospel singer)
