  1. I'm just getting to this party late (I haven't been on the board all day), and I've only skimmed just the first few posts in this thread --- so pardon if someone has already said something like this before... You know what?? Miles wasn't the greatest trumpet player ever. IN FACT, when I think of trying to rank all the trumpet players that I personally like, I usually can't even include Miles in the rankings. I mean, compared to Lee Morgan and Woody Shaw, Miles almost wasn't a trumpet player, or at least not enough the conventional sense, to make any sort of intelligent comparison. (And in this respect, I think Miles is more in the same category as I put Don Cherry, or Tomasz Stanko, or even Kenny Wheeler.) And that's just it -- my brain (criticize all you want, but my brain thinks the way it thinks, and even I can't change that), let me I'll start again... My brain can't even include Miles in that "greatest trumpet player" game, because the Miles I love most (starting in December of 1965, and going on until 1975), doesn't play trumpet in enough of a "conventional" kind of way, in order to make such a comparison. And with each passing year -- 1965, '66, '67, '68, '69, '70, '71, '72, '73, '74, and '75 -- Miles gets more and more unconventional. (And I list each year separately, because each year represents a slightly different version of Miles.) My brain can compare Lee Morgan, and Woody Shaw, and Charles Tolliver, and Freddie Hubbard, and any of a dozen similar trumpeters, with each other ----- but how can I compare the Miles of 1969 and 1970 with all those other "progressive hardbop" trumpeters??? I can't. So I don't I love Miles playing, more and more with each passing year after he joined Columbia in 1956. I don't specifically dislike Miles dates for Prestige (and before), but there are very few Miles dates before 1956 that I get very excited about. (I used to own the Prestige box, but sold it a few years ago to a friend with more conservative tastes than me. Perhaps there are a handful of individual Miles albums from that Prestige box that I might like, but they've never been much of a priority for me either.) The Miles that I love is Miles on Columbia, and he makes his quantum leap for me with "The Plugged Nickel" recordings in December of 1965. I like nearly every Miles recording I've heard from the earlier 1955-1965 era, but I LOVE nearly every Miles recording I've heard from the 1965-1975 era. Miles was an incredible bandleader, who happened to play trumpet. And I think the way he played trumpet, transcended the instrument itself. OK, I've said my bit -- now I'm going back to read the rest of this thread (meaning everything above this post).
  2. I had seriously never heard of "A-Rod" until the trade. Shows you how much I follow sports!!
  3. Wow!! That's $28 for my wife and I (hell yeah, I filled it out for her too). Haven't gotten my check yet, but I'll let you all know if/when I do.
  4. I'd be curious to hear that one "Miles with the Gil Evans Orchestra" live date from 1968. (No tapes are known to exist.) Are there any other 'lost' legendary "Miles" things that people know of??? Maybe Miles with the usual quintet plus Joe Henderson, in late 1967?? (Again, no tapes are known to exist.) I have read that there are tapes floating around of one or maybe two gigs with Wayne, Herbie, Ron, and Tony -- but without Miles. Don't know if they were gigs that Miles was supposed to play at, or if the band just played a couple nights, here and there, without him. Also, of course I'd love to hear any live Andrew Hill dates from, say, 1963-1969. Did Hill even gig much back then?? Did he ever have any "working" bands???
  5. I've got one. Neat disc. Most of the audio "interview" clips are from "The Miles Davis Project" - which was an 8-hour long Miles radio-only documentary that was broadcast back around 1992 (plus or minus, I forget the exact year). Still, a pretty nice item. I think I got mine on eBay for about $8, $10 tops.
  6. Free, I'll see your " " - and raise you three more: " "!!!
  7. Cream and sugar, please. Can't stand the stuff Black, unless it's REALLY good flavored coffee, like "cinnamon hazelnut".
  8. You wouldn't include any Miles in your "top 100" list??? Careful, Moose -- people have been banned for lesser offenses around these parts. But seriously, I'd think any "top 100" list worth even half a damn, would have to have at least 2, or probably 3 different Miles albums on it. How could you not at least include "Kind of Blue"?? And by the way -- I'm NOT saying that Miles should be THE place to start. I just thought that was a easy place for ME to start, in terms of suggesting titles for our own "top 100" list.
  9. OK, let's take a stab at this ourselves. And let's start with Miles, and I think we gotta limit ourselves to 5 Miles albums -- cuz it wouldn't make sense to have more than 5% of the "top-100" list go to just one person. Here's what I'd pick... "Kind of Blue" - impossible to not include, 'nuff said. "Birth of the Cool" - hard not to include this one too. "Miles Ahead" - gotta include a "Miles and Gil" album, though one could argue for "Sketches of Spain" instead, I suppose. "Nefertiti" - gotta have something by the 2nd great quintet, though you could argue for others too. (I think "Plugged Nickel" is a bit too 'out there' to include in a 'top 100' list, much as I dearly love it.) "Bitches Brew" - Gotta include somthing from his electric era, and for a number of reasons (yes, including sales), "Bitches Brew" probably is the best choice (even though there are other electric Miles titles I prefer over BB). Any arguments with these choices as the representitive "Miles" titles on our own "top 100" list???
  10. Amen to that suggestion!!
  11. By the way, personally I'd probably pick Hill's "Black Fire" for such a list, over "Point of Departure" (often "PoD" is the one most cited as being 'the' Andrew Hill album). -- but that's just me. Here are a whole bunch of links, to a whole bunch of "top 100 jazz albums"-type lists. I think there are plenty that are better than the list presented in the first post in this thread. Many "top 100 jazz albums" lists: CLICK HERE
  12. Where's Andrew Hill??
  13. Don't have a clue, but I thought I'd mention that I saw The Lips perform live at the college I went to, back around 1988. Didn't have any idea who they were back then, and the only thing I remember was that they did a really shitty cover of "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" (which was a huge hit at the time), and it pissed everybody off in the crowd - which I think was their plan.
  14. Who wants to start fire-bombing AAJ with the news about JC being down???? B) JUST KIDDING!!!!!
  15. Oh great, just what this world needs more of. A video of some horny guy on the internet.
  16. Worth the price of admission, all by itself!!!
  17. Here's a cool one that looks like it's from the 70's. B) The source page is all in French, but here's a link - if you want to see it in its original context: SOURCE

  20. Since we really don't have nearly enough Andrew Hill threads on this board ( ), here's another one. Post any pictures of Andrew Hill that you can find, especially any that are slightly less well-known. Thanks!!!
  21. Haven't seen the Arkestra in a few years (last time was probably in 1999 or so), but I've caught them 3 different times here in Kansas City, under Allan's leadership. They were "very good" to "great" all three times.
  22. It was recorded in a NYC studio. Brandon, I had no idea you grew up in a NYC studio. Actually, that explains quite a bit, now that I think of it.
