Which McMaster are you referring to? McMaster is not credited on the 1989 CD reissue, Malcolm Addey is. Talk about catching up late .... so it's Addey, I assume (don't have the disc in my hands, don't know the pile at the bottom of which it must be located right now). I tend to forget that Addey did some of those early BN CDs .... I did keep his old "Money Jungle" though, as I prefer the sound of it over the later McMaster that was a no-brainer as it added several more alternate takes (and I think even one new tune). Oops, and I hadn't seen my previous reply ... perusing this and some other threads right now to look up stuff on cdjapan ...

Seems he's real: http://www.talentris.com/interviewn.php?number=7 There's also an feghbook profile, so anyone playing that game could drop him a question - I'd surely be interested, since Steve sums up my own take: don't think I'll ever land that LP box, so ... On the other hand, I've got several of those Essential Keynote Collection discs - the Hawkins is one fantastic set! - and really don't feel like overspending on what might end up a crappy-sounding (and even worse possibly partly MP3 sourced) box set done by the crooks. Too bad PolyGram/Verve/Universal never really bothered to do the right thing and release this music jazz reissues were still feasible.

there we go again .... btw, of the European ones, amazon.it is selling lots and lots for 4-5 €

The notes aren't that great indeed, but I was never really bothered by that. That Hamp story is weird though ... I assume the notes are by Kurt S. Weil? He died quite exactly a year ago (on Dec 12, 2012), so there's no way to find out, I'm afraid. He was respected and had his well-woven network, I think (at one time he led GRP Europe) ... would be interesting to find out if that was just some lapse or if there's any actual story behind it.

Yep, mentioned a couple pages back, shortly before the box came out ... pretty cool that they added it, indeed!
-
Agreed! I was merely answering the question where to start with OM, I'd not be able to do so for Leimgruber in general, wouldn't feel competent.
-
I would start with "Kirikuki" myself..if you like that you can explore further. They are all good though...none are radically different from the other so... There's a pre-Japo title called "Live at Montreaux" too but either of the Japo titles would do for a start... Actually the ECM CD compilation might not be a bad starting point ... love the recent "Willisau" on Intakt (CD only) ... they did a few more reunion concerts (actually two, I think? would need to check my files at home) that were broadcast on Swiss radio (as was Willisau, before it came out officially). The best I've heard of Leimgruber's was a live set in trio with Christian Weber on bass and Christian Wolfahrt on drums ... gorgeous, very quiet yet intense stuff - but then I only know a small fraction of his large work.

Oh, I love "Portrait of Thelonious" ... never occurred to me that that isn't a good rekkid!

To stick to the charming imagery here, there's also some oral diarrhea going on ... but that books sounds very interesting, Face of the Bass - just read most of the introduction in the preview up on amazon (the final one or two pages are missing, alas).

Sam Rivers Contrasts & Abdullah Ibrahim African Piano
king ubu replied to David Ayers's topic in Re-issues
And I want "Streams"! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streams_(album) -
Delalande: Petits Motets (Christie) - effin' gorgeous! Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, Symphonies Nos. 21 & 27 (Portal, Entremont) - best Mozart concerto I've heard ... wonderfully subdued, allowing the music to really shine) others I've enjoyed: Delalande: Te Deum (Christie) Lully: Petits Motets (Christie) Lully: Grands Motets (Herreweghe) Monteverdi: Lamento della ninfa / Altri canti di Marte (Christie) Monteverdi: Selva Morale e Spirituale - recueil de 1640 (extraits) (Christie) Ockeghem: Requiem (Peres) guess you can indeed say I love William Christie and his combo (Les Arts Florissants) ... what with singers like Véronique Gens, Sandrine Piau, Guillemette Laurens, Dominique Visse ... the Ockeghem is one of the very few classical discs I've had (AND occasionally played) since high school.

Sure, just had a few minutes and a (free) account there ... glad to help! No time to listen to the whole thing yet though (had to watch two more episodes of "Homeland", I'm 'fraid, I'm on the hook there).

Sam Rivers Contrasts & Abdullah Ibrahim African Piano

Keith "No End"? Really? Nice about the Rivers, but I'll just stick to my LP, I guess. But why does "African Piano" need reissue, it's been around forever, hasn't it? Was it ever OOP? Anyway, it's a glorious album! -
Very cool! I've been collecting those tapes ever since they started turning up ... a whole page dedicated to them will be great! This is hands down my favorite blog of the past two or three years!

There's nothing difficult, it's just MP3 files (17) instead of a ZIP or RAR. But if it were the later, someone would not be able to unpack it and it would be just as difficult

The John Coltrane Reference
king ubu replied to EKE BBB's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well, Routledge promised to rectify the situation (by offering to send me the paperback) ... haven't received it yet, but I'm okay with that. Still sucks to have spent so much money on a faulty copy. -
I've got this one w/Joe Cohn: and I've been eyeing that Progressive twofer for a while ... guess I should go for it!
-
Thanks for the clarification, Mike! If we all go by the actual filenames and the durations above, there should be no misunderstandings! Did I hear Johnny Lytle with that clumsy ogun player somewhere? The big band track (#6) sounded gorgeous ... but I arrived at work before it ended. Looking forward to listening - hopefully tonight! - and posting some first impressions then.
-
Very same one I ended up with ... now if everybody else is as smart as us, there shan't be any problem
-
I guess we'll be fine if we go by the actual file names ... already rose that question. It also took me several attempts to get them all in btw. Ticking all and hitting the DL button at the bottom left brought about 10 or so in, the rest took two more attempts of ticking ...
-
Thanks for the files ... just to be clear, the sequence you want us to listen to is the one of the actual file names? (i.e. "BFT117-001", "BFT117-002" ... "BFT117-017") Since "titles" and tack numbers in tags are differnt (mostly confusingly just by one digit, i.e. the file names "BFT11-001" has "002" in the title field .. and some tracks are unnumbered and unnamed - can't give exact details as I already overwrote the tags - need a common album title for them to show up as an album on my smartphone)

Just in case ... it's accident insurance that pays (part of) the costs in my case ... skateboarding accident twenty some years ago ...
