The Chopin was reissued separately again - still need it. Those are the currently available (French) versions: I've only heard Cziffra with some Chopin on a pair of LPs on Philips ("L'extraordinaire" has a mix of various pieces, some mighty fine, then I have the Philips LP "Chopin: Polonaisen", german edition) but those are interesting enough that I want to get the 5CD set, too! These are older 5CD editions: http://www.amazon.com/Chopin-Works-Piano/dp/B000FOTHDC/ http://www.amazon.com/Chopin-uvres-pour-piano-Box/dp/B00008LLIS/ And this here the 10CD set combining both (I assume): http://www.amazon.com/Chopin-Liszt-Valses-Polonaises-Euvres-Piano-Georges-Cziffra/dp/B001BSH26A/

That's the early 1956/57 recordings, yes? The ones I've heard are the 1972-75 ones (from The Piano Collection). I just bought the early recordings as part of the french 2010 5CD set, which I assume to be a straight reissue of the box you pictured. Still figuring out recording details for that one though, the info in the booklet isn't that exact.

sh, don't tell anyone

I picked up an LP of Brahms' first and third trio of the late 60's Suk Trio (Katchen, Starker) - still mighty fine! Guess I need to find that Supraphon 2CD set, thanks for mentioning it, moms!
-
Great stuff! Yeah! About half of this weeks's listening was dedicated to that Liszt Piano Collection 10 CD box, and Cziffra (as well as Ogdon's sonata) is outstanding!
-
Cziffra with Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsodies"!

That IS the 1956 Moscow recording - and it sounds mighty good to my ears! It says "MONO Recordings" in the booklet, so it shouldn't suffer from issues the reprocessed stereo editions do. Sorry, forget to say I'm talking about the DG 2CD set - don't know the larger edition. And I agree with Larry that this trio's "Archduke" is mighty, mighty good! The Heifetz/Feuerman/Rubinstein from 1941 is great, too. But I'd have to compare all the versions first (also have Thibaud/Casals/Cortot, Zukerman/du Pré/Barenboim and Stern/Istomin/Rose).

None received at all - that does upset me! Okay, I've not ordered for a few months, but I've bought 70 or 80 boxes in the past 15 years, and at least a dozen Selects and Singles, each, so I do feel like being part of that community... Are you signed up for the regular emails? Yes, I usually get them (though sometimes I read about them here first and only get them a day or half a day later).

I guess it's when you hear a very distant echo of the music that will actually follow half a second or so later (so it's a pre-echo).

Great, so it'll be that one then! Thanks guys!

Has anyone actually heard the Keller's takes on the string quartets in the meantime? They're around cheaply and I consider just buying them anyway... The Reiner concerto above was another mighty fine recommendation, Chuck - thanks a lot!

I've just mentioned it elsewhere, but I guess this qualifies for the bargains thread: Aldo Ciccolini Enregistrements EMI 1950-1991 - € 46.60 @ amazon.it

This looks mighty fine! What little I've heard of Grimal (a radio broadcast or two) sounded mighty fine!

Thanks, pre-orded the Debussy/Ravel Martinon set! Thought the Boulez one was out already, not sure, but I think I even saw it in a local store.
-
Mine's okay too, just had to check! That explains why I thought I was turning crazy when I discovered the wrong cover this morning - thought I'd not noticed that wrong spelling over so many years.
-
Never noticed it - hilarious!

Depends on how my translation comes across ... That Alice-o-phobic said he had proof or whatever about Alice's doings but didn't have his library at hand - I'm curious about the things he comes up with, if he does. I sometimes do! German music forums are a drag, most of the time ... Proof? The plot thickens! She must have replaced Trane's brain sometime late in 1965 without anyone noticing! (I'm only a member of the german RollingStone forum - that's quite fun, most of the time, but obviously the scope goes way beyond jazz, and those interested in jazz are quite few.)

Shit, never managed to catch him in person. r.i.p.

Fixed r.i.p. Rob Pronk

Too much to read over there, but that one guy conservatifitizes (or whatever) himself, even if he says he doesn't. Glad I'm no member there, I'd turn crazy! Also someone tell them that the Düsseldorf set from the 1960 Miles tour (which in its recent reissue still sounds rather crappy, alas - I had hopes since it does seem legit, that they'd try somewhat harder to locate better, undubbed, un-fake-applaused, tapes) isn't a live performance.

Well, 1957 "Tijuana Moods" might have been his best record, but when it finally came out, it had been overtaken by several others. I bet they got that Mingus quote from the time they decided that - oooooh, this is waaaaaay too advanced for the moronic backward-headed auience, let's keep it in the cupboard for five years first, m'kay?
