The encore from "The Last Waltz" - that one is FUNKY! Funky as hell! How Levon and Danko lock in the groove together, so sparse, so seemingly simple... but darn! To me, they're the best rock band of all times! And Helm singing and kicking his drums at the same time is something else!

Thanks a lot, everyone! Boring office day, but will have dinner at a nice little place tonight... and get some books and (hopefully) an invitation to Sharon Jones' gig in May! (missed both her previous two gigs in town)

Absolutely!

Reminds me how slow I am in catching up with new releases... just got his "Beyond the Wall" today, and haven't even listened attentively to "Standard of Language" yet.

Unless they bring Fred Hopkins back, it's no real Air show.

For Europeans the good place it get it for merely €6 (this is a double CD) is amazon.it: http://www.amazon.it/Dynasty-Stan-Getz/dp/B001NHZ2PW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333896809&sr=8-1 This is excellent release, indeed. My favorite Getz at the moment is his live one from '75 "My Foolish Heart". I barely listen to jazz these days, but Getz is once of the few exceptions. As disc two of my old Polygram edition has quickly gotten holes (!) in it (there's just plastic there, you can see through on a few spots) after I'd bought it used in very good condition, I have a set from amazon.it on its way now... could rip (and can still play) the bonustrack, luckily! It was the dreaded foam rubber btw, inserted in the back of the jumbo jewel case, that stuck to the disc and would hardly come off again, revealing said holes once it was peeled off (peel slowly and see... ha!)

Saw a pile of mint (or near mint or whatever) Jazz Tribune 2LP sets at a very good price (roughly 8-9€)... got Earl Hines Vols. 1/2 and 3/4, left behind Vols. 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 of Ellington (got the big RCA CD-box), the Chu Berry (got the Mosaic), the Bunny Berigan (got all the Chronogicals - should I still get the Tribune? please advise!), the Fletcher Henderson (which I do have on CD). I've also got Vols. 1/2 and 5/Panassié by Bechet and the Dizzy (because sound on the 2CD set isn't that... lively). Still waiting for a good copy of Vol. 3/4 of Bechet to turn up somewhere (I'm wary of buying LPs via the internets, mostly). Anyway, also got: Tomasz Stanko - Purple Sun (Calig) Arthur Blythe - The Grip (India Navigation) Lee Konitz - Yes, Yes, Nonet (Steeplechase) Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians (ECM) and a wonderful Japanese reissue (MV 2100) of "Jazz Samba Encore", which is my favorite of Getz' bossa platters...

Yeah, great news! I'll jump at each of them!

Here's Marc Myers' biography: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:h4CPVbX_4jsJ:www.halmckusick.com/jazz/biography/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ch&client=opera some bits from there: I wish some recordings would turn up! Someone must have had a tape recording running the 70s or 80s!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Discs 3-6 now - the Louis Armstrong Story sessions -
(both originally on Jef Gilson's Palm label, I think - definitely the Lancaster which I have here, not sure about the fantastic Singer/Gilson disc) Then there's also a Kippie Moeketsi (with Singer on one track) titled "Blue Stompin'" (as-shams), and a Singer done in Johannesburg: Hal Singer - Soweto to Harlem (AsShams/The Sun, 1976)
-
Wouldn't really compare it to "Nation Time" directly, but to a lot of stuff that's been mentioned here: Hal Singer & Jef Gilson - Soul of Africa also, reissued on the same label (Kindred Spirits): Byard Lancaster - Funny Funky Rib Crib
-
dimly remember reading about someone trying to reissue that one and not getting past either wadud or phillips who was against a reissue for some reason or other... (Ubu?) (clips on youtube sound pretty great to me though... on page 60 here is more on this band Yeah, that's a killer LP. It's not earth-shattering in the broad sense, but as far as intense free jazz records go, it's mighty fine. Agreed - but as I said above, I think that's not quite up to JLH's scrutiny. alas...

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

earlier today: Discs 1-3 - wonderful! Dan Morgenstern provides a great introduction - I'm really having a hard time understanding why these recordings, this band, was bad-mouthed so often! This is royalty at work, and it gets quite clear why that's so! -
Very sad... love his mid-50s recordings with Galbraith. Must confess that I had to read up what happened to him after he vanished from the jazz world - seem she still played some jazz. There are no recordings, however?

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
after having finished with disc 7 of the Storyville Satchmo box, it's now on to discs 3 and 4 of the RCA box -
Very few things of interest, to be honest... and most of these albums - those not rare in CD age - were also out in various European editions that sound alright to my ears - first there were the Original Sound digipacks, then the Masters digipack, and there were a few that were out in the US(?) series with the piano keys (the Bryant, for instance). Anyway, the Rufus Harley, George Wallington (was on Koch, wasn't it?), Roland Hanna, Jack Wilson, Eddie Higgins, and maybe one of the Bags' and that Steve Marcus (anyone knows it? how is it?) might be of interest...

Understandable though against the background of grade inflation in the reviewing industry in general. No disrespect, but we all know that reviewers get a little, uh, enthuasiastic and I dare say editors are wary of seeming to hype just everything that comes along. On the other hand, if no one ever got enthusiastic any more, we'd be extinct pretty soon (might be a good thing though*, all things considered...) *) was there ever a Blakeyley album by that title btw? and will they ever get to Gaylayle, too? or will the world have gone undder before?

into disc 5 and the Nice concert - lesser sound, still fine playing... -
That's why you throwin' a 3CD set at us? (A great one, btw - thanks!) You're right about Gayle's sound, I think. It comes though beautifully on the new disc, in the sparse setting with just bass, drums, an his glorious tenor (I think that's the perfect setting for hi anyway, but I don't yet know or own too many of his discs). Oh, and clifford, that sucks about the editors downgrading your rating!
