  1. Yes, this is another one of Pujol's common tricks - including an album ("A Story Tale", in this case) that was never released on cd individually, but on a compilation of sorts. A cd issued under Clifford Jordan's name called "Mosaic" includes "A Story Tale", alas. It's "Breezing" indeed. "A Story Tale" was part of the twofer CD "Mosaic" by Clifford Jordan (which combined Jordan's "Starting Time" with Jordan/Red's "A Story Tale"), while Red's twofer "Red, Blue and Green" combined "The Mode" and "Images". Some fine music there, and an official Fantasy 2CD set would definitely have been wonderful!
  2. I'd say so... in that it's more settled, with the rhythm section often going into some kind of weird but in the pocket grooves, kind of monk-ish as I hear it. This new disc should not fright anyone away, I think - and yet it's not mellow or easy on the ears or anything. I really like it (and to me, clifford's 4 of 5 rating is rather on the low side, I'd give 4,5 or maybe even the full 5!)
  3. Yes indeed! But it will, alas, likely stink, soundwise... I'd love to see a proper reissue of Gryce's "Reminiscin'" - can't someone tell the Japanese to please do that one? Also would love to see that one Sonny Red album that's not been out (with Lateef, nevertheless!) in a separate, proper reissue. Hate buying these sets just to get a quarter of their contents.
  4. There's a great article on Gayle in the current (April) issue of The Wire - and his new album is da shit, as dey say: Guess this will easily be my album of the year! Highly focused, burningly intense, honest and straight from the heart no bullshit music.
  5. You must be listening to quite some Hemphill lately That's a pipe organ indeed on #13! Had to include it, just for the fun of it... the sax player on that tune is sort of the hero of this BFT #14: Wynton's age could still be counted on the fingers of two hands when that was recorded... And #16 seems to be an excerpt indeed (the track comes from a compilation LP which I don't even own, but I've got another LP by this band, and there's even some out on CD - still have to get that, though)
  6. - but then usually in such situations the employees don't get a $, but a pink slip -
  7. Happy Birthday, Evan!
  8. Or bandS. Cannonball obviously had a strong enough sense of self to hire tenor/flute players like Lateef and Lloyd who could potentially upstage him. For me, Lateef is the highlight of the Jazz Icons DVD. Well, I was specifically talking of the sextet with Lateef - don't think Lloyd is up on the same level, sorry. But then I know just that weird concept/musical album (Fiddler on the Roof) which may not show that band its best...
  9. Teddy Wilson - Solo / Big Band just popped in CD1.... finally got this (and have the Satchelmouth box on the way, too)
  10. My discs were wrapped in some flyers... got my order in two packages also, but they got here the same day. Very happy with the music, I must say! The Hemingway ("The Whimbler") and Rob Brown ("Sounds") are mighty good, the two Whit Dickeys are fine, too (though I do need more time there, but with Campbell and Brown... they ought to be good!), the Rumback is quite what I expected of it (got it for Ward/Ajemian, never heard of Rumback or the tenor player), and because the line-up (as/ts/b/d) looks very appealing to me... that leaves the Rudd/Dresser, which is good as well (but hasn't yet been listened to attentively, will d so today, I think).
  11. In the case of that CD which was in The Turnaround? Or maybe thèy took another turn?
  12. I can kind of relate to what gnhrtg and JSngry say about the Konitz, though I've no intentions to sell mine. I love and admire Lee's music and will keep listening to these. The octet album was the only one I've known previously (I've got the LP, also got the LP of the similarly fine Nonet album on Chiaroscuro), and so far it's still my favorite among the five in the box. The one with Peggy Stern, they had it in my high school's library, and that one never clicked with me, still didn't.
  13. With all the wonderful music you just purchased, is that really all that you have to say? It was back then since I'd not played anything by then... but still the packaging is silly. But I've played the Rumback and Blake discs by now, and both are very good!
  14. Just watching "The Hazy Osterwald Story"... pretty funny. And there's a great little "Man with the Golden Arm"/monkey joke while they're in London
  15. btw, of three discs in my order with these silly magnetic digipacks, only one really works, the other two just will remain open... I've often wondered about this packaging when looking at Clean Feed disc in stores, but now I'm finally convinced it's really moronic.
  16. He'd have been scandalously young, but this guy could have been Rava's dad... but the latter's complexion would be somewhat different then
  17. Got my order today - two packages, which was nice - might have just about cost me some VAT and stuff if it had come in one! Happy easter listening ahead!
  18. We certainly had the Gaurdian, didn't we? Seems Connors insisted, thinking he was actaully (huh?) right!
  19. already guessed wrong w/ Harrell. is it bad form to guess twice in a BFT? i have one more guess... Sure, go ahead! Don't know of any bad forms around here... would be delighted to get second round comments or whatever goes through your head!

    Vocalion

Oh, "Afro Jazz" would be great! And so would "Hum Dono", of course....
  21. There's a duplified track (and hence another one missing) - not sure, but I think CD2#22 is one of the takes of "Sweet as Can Be" that's duplicated, while "Late in the Evening Blues" is missing.
  22. weezie arse?
  23. Same here! Fabulous band! Quintessential hardbop! The Lugano disc is well worth tracking down (officially, TCB is distributed by Amazon, but not all their releases show up there, and many cost half a kidney).
  24. Stefan, thanks for your thoughts! Some thoughts of mine in response... Again, no names are correct - but you've guess that already #1: Rendell/Carr - interesting! That and the NDR remark on #4 is the closest you got! (Hm, there's also Harriott and ICP/Dorge... kind of circling in ) #12: the piano player is 9 years Jarrett's senior... he's involved in another piece here. I'm hoping for someone to pick out the trumpet player in #8! He might well be the biggest name of all featured here (he's not the leader though). #2: this is of course a different era than Wild Bill, but this guy does indeed sound rather old-fashioned compared to what JOS came up with. Took me a while to dig, but I enjoy him (got two of his albums and some sidemen-appearances, like the one here). #14: there's no tenor there... so not Shepp, for sure
