  1. Checking that link more closely and comparing with my CDs - it seems all of the tracks from the first two sessions that according to the link only found on the Mosaic, are on "Air" (Candid CCD79046) - except for take 5 of "Air", which remains exclusive to the Mosaic set, if I'm correct. That, again according to the site linked above, is just a labelling error - take 5 was a false start, the track labelled take 5 on CCD97034 ("Cell Walk for Celeste") and is identical to take 6 (hence either CCD97034 has takes 4 and 6, and the later is also on CCD79013, "Jumpin' Punkins"). So that leaves one cut ("Air" take 5, from Oct 12) missing from, and one track ("Jumpink Punkins" take 6, once mis-labelled as take 5) duplicated on the Candid CDs.
  2. Best way to find that one is on the French 'America' label LP release - which is how I got my copy. An original on the Charles Mingus label though would be a pretty mythical beast, I suspect. Or look for Prestige P-24092 - Portrait, a 2LP that also includes Town Hall Concert and has liner notes by Jaki Byard. Thanks, wasn't even awre of these reissues!
  3. Latently blatant? Or blaringly so?
  4. to some these cataracts can get quite... orgasmic - but wait, that's not my mom! get well soon, Chuck!
  5. What's that, her year of birth? She kinda looks like a cyborg anyway
  6. Huh? Will the wife drive you there then, once you've hopped in?
  7. Best way to find that one is on the French 'America' label LP release - which is how I got my copy. An original on the Charles Mingus label though would be a pretty mythical beast, I suspect. I've once spotted one in Paris (but it wasn't for sale) Will have to look for this in case it really won't be included (which, with all due respect, would be a silly call in my opinion).
  8. Those DL certificates rarely work for me... What I'd be most interested to know though: is "My Favorite Quintet", the LP itself, planned to be included? Never, ever, saw that one around - it's one of the Mingus LPs I've never heard (I think the only official one besides the late Hampton date).
  9. not sure if this is 100% correct (please let me know about goofs and mistakes!) - but I put this together many years ago:Mingus Candid.doc Taylor is somewhat more messy/complicated as there's multiple takes and the Candid discs don't always give take numbers. I gave up sorting that out, but this here should answer most questions: http://bb10k.com/Cecil_Taylor/CTcandid.html

I'm spinning it again... it has a nice after hours, bluesy feel to it. Very lose. And Al Levitt's rather special, too... 'course he was on half of Wilen's debut, "Tilt", already... would have enjoyed some more room for Gourley, too - a bit less "Night in Tunisia"-riffin', but hey, it's good fun! I can see this one slowly growing on me!
  12. Also style wins over substance... or as Mr. Sangrey put it: their presentation suggests much more substance than there really is. Not that I know this very release, but I've seen some of them (and bought a couple, too... the Quincy and Mingus Birdland ones were just too good to pass - the Quincy makes a big mess of the liners, though, not quoting and unquoting properly). Anyway, the individual Candid discs seem to be in print, so there's no need for this crappy set.
  13. Bumping this thread up... just gave the recent Impulse 2-on-1 twofer a first spin and enjoyed it! Enjoyed reading this thread, too - thanks for the ride, guys! Got to dig out the Kahn book and read the pages on the album again.

Got my disc today, gave it a first spin - nice one. Nothing too big though... it's a bit on the short side (36 or so minutes) and sounds like a lose jam over large parts. But hey, more Barney is a good thing!
  15. Happy Birthday, Roy Haynes! Just found this bit from an interview published a year ago:
  16. Yeah, and there's no such thing as a right to be able to listen to all of it, all the time. Now whether that's a good thing or not is an entirely different question - but not one that Werner Uehlinger has to find an answer to. Certainly I'd be more than happy to see more of the older titles in print, but then how much demand is there, really? We know of plenty of things with small runs that do remain in print for years (that's true for many hat titles as well), so it really seems keeping the backlist in print is hardly feasible for a small label such as hat. Also while I am romantic enough to dig the idea of handing over tapes and rights to the artists, that would be suicidal. Remember, there's market and there's some rules (again: whether that's a good thing... etc), and if you want to survive, you have to play along mostly. Uehlinger seems to be fairly successful doing just that, at least in my book. One more thing: I know many have little to no interest in recent recordings by hat - they just want all the Braxton, Taylor, Lacy et. al. in print all the time... that's really too bad, as there's plenty of good stuff that Uehlinger puts out! Furthermore, he still wants to focus more on releasing new music, instead of turning hat into mainly a reissue label. That's his call, after all. We can rant about it, we can be disappointed, we can ask questions (serious and silly ones) - but it's his label after all. Talk about responsability and bringing stuff back to the public, keeping it accessible etc... those are important and difficult questions, to which I have no answers, and it seems no one has. Where are the majors there? What are they doing to keep the cultural legacy alive? Nothing. And they do swim in money (well, at least they did for some four or five decades). I guess one ought to be a bit more thoughtful in demanding these things from small record labels, that - again - see it as their goal to document current musical tendencies and developments, rather than turning into a museum of their own past.
  17. Crap. Werner and Pia seperated, he went on alone with Hat, her name disappeared. End of story. Moms seems to be on quite a wrong track here, sorry.
  18. The guy told me on the phone that they have a whole pile of the box there... so it's not gone yet. I was afraid it was... it's not too commonly found on the internets. Also, to me it obviously feels a bit cheaper :-)
  19. Rang up the shop and they will send replacement discs... they got a whole stack of the box, it seems. It's not exactly cheap there, but shipping within Switzerland's free and it was the best offer I could find, after all: http://www.phono-schop.ch/product_info.php/info/p4332_Osterwald-Hazy.html
  20. Very much in the same boat... the Dixon and Hemphill CDs are amazing, and more of the same will be most welcome! Fischer is someone into whose music I've been meaning to dig deeper for some time anyway (and Daley is still a most amazing perspective, even though I've known about it for a little while now!). The Carmell Jones sounds like a good idea to me as well - would love to hear it!
  21. sip yo hand? why, do dey love singles?
  22. I would love to catch Sonny again, but certainly not with a douchebag such as Sting... always thought he was a lousy bassist and wished he'd gotten a better bass player on his early albums (and lost interest alltogether somewhen late in the 90s).
  23. Listening to the 4CD set now... it's very nice, but I'm totally out of luck. While playing mostly works, this seems to be a case of CDs that have been damaged by way of some sort of chemical process... the box was still sealed, but the CDs really look horrible, with spots and areas that look scratched. Some tracks won't play (and I've not reached the end of disc 3 yet, which looks worst) and only one of the discs would copy in EAC without any errors. Guess I'll have to ring up the shop where I bought it and ask what to do (I've bought it w/invoice, so I've not yet paid anything for it, luckily). But the package, book and all, is splendid, and I do enjoy the music a lot! Some great tenor playing from Dennis Armitage (never heard of him before), lots of fine trumpet from Hazy (he was one of the first in Switzerland to grasp bebop, as far as I know), and plenty of good Höllerhagen... and now I've just reached the tracks were Werner Dies steps in for Höllerhagen, and he delivers some fine alto solos right away, too!
  24. Happy Birthday, Paul!
  25. just sent an email, too!
