On these Edenville sessions, the info on all releases is botched! Jacques Gervais is the bassist, Al "Big" Jones is the drummer (on "Straight No Chaser" w/Griffin, which again ran for 14:54 before the bass solo was edited out - it runs 13:41 on all releases). Guy Hayat is the drummer on the other released cuts (with Gervais still on bass). Just happened to play some of this music yesterday - some great, relaxed playing from Bud, and some amazing Griffin!

Hal Russell / Mars Williams recording
king ubu replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Great news, Chuck! I fell in love with Hal when I first heard him on "The Hal Russell Story", one of the most unlikely ECM albums I've heard... got the Bomba CD of "Hal Russell NRG Ensemble" and the Nessa CD of the album with Tyler, will be great to have the third piece, too! Completely missed this thread when you started it! Oh, and thanks a lot for the fascinating post #14 up here! Most interesting! I've heard the Daley RCA LP, would love to get hold of a copy! -
Willie "The Lion" Smith - Commodore Classics

uhm... looking again (and approaching the end of the disc), BOTH versions of "Darktown Strutter's Ball" are included!
-
Willie "The Lion" Smith - The Many Faces of Jazz Vol. 30 (Vogue CMDINT 9736) Some nice music! Solos, duos with drummer Wallace Bishop and a few trio/quartet sides with Buck Clayton, Bishop plus Claude Luter (all of the band sides are here, except for the unissued version of "Darktown Strutter's Ball" - which is mis-printed as "Darktown Stutter's Ball" on the discography on the backcover, but spelt correctly in the tracklisting).

Although a version did exist in the 1960s, I'd argue they were really a band of the 1970s...the first record was 1971, off the top of my head... Now the Blue Notes... which was my next proposition... I see these as kind of a continuum... McGregor, Dudu, Feza, Dyani, Miller, Moholo... it might be very true though that in the 60s they were mostly still struggling and marginalized, while in the 70s they played more often and - probably the two went hand-in-hand - more european (british) musicians joined the ranks... "Very Urgent" and "Up to Earth" are the McGregor albums to consider, "Blue Notes Legacy - Live in South Africa" and some other early stuff by the Blue Notes, then, too... there'd be more from South Africa, of course!

The Blue Notes, too, of course!

How about Chris McGregor, the Brotherhood of Breath?

Are there any box bargains currently available?

Take a look at this offer. ... which is one of the growing pile of stinkin' cheapo sets for the crapper ... -
Yeah, I use ImgBurn for DVDs and data CDRs and DVDs, too. Very good programme... never looked into burning audio CDRs with it.

@Allen: what Morton CD? Jelly Roll with Fru? -
Nero drove me crazy... Burrrn is my software of choice, too. Weird that it won't work with Windows 7 but ImgBurn will - I think they're coming from the same guys... might be a combination of drives, installation, setups, whatever. My internal drive (Windows Vista) won't work with Burrrn either but my external burner never failed me.

Jackie McLean Prestige vs Jackie McClean Blue Note POLL
king ubu replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
I strongly echo the feelings expressed above about the years 1963-65, or maybe rather 1962-66 or even '67 pr '68. "Demon's Dance" is growing here! And "Let Freedom Ring" should be included, too! So it's BN all the way... of course the band with Draper and Webster Young is wonderful, too - but much of the Prestige music sounds somewhat rough and unfinished to me. Rough Jackie remained, his intense delivery was there all the time... but the music on those albums with Tolliver, Walter Davis, Hutcherson, Moncur... those are my favorites. -
Got to play me some Kenton (and Christy) again soon... me dig that stuff! Thanks for all the music and r.i.p. Mr. Rugolo.

Miles Davis - 1986-1991 The Warner Years
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Looks like the collaboration with Prince and a compilation of already-released guest shots/cameos Miles did on various albums of the time. Hm, that's definitely not worth 50$... but I strongly assume the price will come down quite some. These 5CD (or 4CD) sets seem to go rather for 25-30€ lately. Packaging is standard, booklet probably none too great, so... -

jpc is usually *very* reliable. And very easy to deal with if there are any issues. Can't guarantee for 100% fulfillment of orders though, haven't ordered anything too special/rare/japanese/expensive there. -
Miles Davis - 1986-1991 The Warner Years
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Agree on "Amandla"! I mentioned it several times, I think: that was the first Miles I ever heard... my mom had (still has) the CD and enjoyed it a lot when I came out. I fell in love with it, must have been 10 years or something back then. Took me a while, "Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" was the one I really *got* when I was 13 or 14. From then on, I was on a journey of discovery that hasn't ended since... and "Amandla" is an album I still enjoy! Haven't done a track-by-track comparison yet, but the blurb says it's just four cuts that are previously unissued. What's the stuff on disc five, then? Not sure I have any of it besides the Horn track (and there I agree with you as well, the album's mighty fine, that track's merely ok). And again: if anyone can find those posts about the scrapped box that was planned some years ago, please post a link or quote them over here! Thanks! -

You Won't Forget Me - Shirley Horn Can someone please point me to the thread/posts where more information about the previously planned but scrapped Warner box were posted? Can't seem to find it right now. As it is, this box doesn't hold much interest to me... I have all the albums except for the "Dingo" one, but including the mighty good Shirley Horn album. The best of the Warners is "Tutu", would have enjoyed more live material though, but then I have the Montreux box for that... and as for "Tutu" I just played the Deluxe edition for the first time yesterday... it had been lying around for several weeks now. No revelation or anything, but it's still a fine album that I enjoy playing now and then.

Fruscella-Moore Fruscella: The unissued Atlantic sessions
king ubu replied to philtenb's topic in New Releases
finally got mine today - spinning now, sounds very relaxed, low-key... more like an informal session at the Open Door than a real studio session intended for release as a whole album... but I guess that atmosphere is a big part of Fruscella's fascination, it's all over his few recordings. -
Happy Birthday, Chris!
