  1. I've bought several Argentinian pressings (Verve, Nonesuch and possibly others) - they all seem to be perfectly fine and as far as I know identical with US or Euro releases. There are "marketplace" vendors from Argentina selling these on sites such as priceminister.com.
  2. I'm with Hans, liking the quartet box quite a lot - it was rather revelatory for me to be able to hear all the sessions in chronological order! However, I do feel sorry about having sold a few of the individual discs... so I bought several of them again in the meantime.
  3. Happy Birthday, Kenny!
  4. Don't know... just age I think, but others certainly will know more.
  5. Yes! It was a bit of a relief since I've heard a few stories that his playing was like that of Peterson post-stroke... sort of having very limited means and acquitting his style to them. Not an impression I ever got during the concert! But he does look old and frail - my impression was he kind of switched gears once he started playing. And I was there to help him fetch his bag from under the piano both times he walked out (after the concert and again after the solo encore). The least a young person can do to help him!
  6. discs one & two just got this... fantastic!
  7. Spent a rather great night in St. Moritz yesterday. Sat at the bar, half a meter to McCoy Tyner's side, so I had clear sight of his fingers all night long... and caught many of the other guys' (Gary Bartz, Gerald Cannon, Joe Farnsworth) smiles and glances at their leader. Tyner seemed frail when walking to the piano, but once he was seated and started playing, he was completely on, powerful left hand riffs and ostinati, great rhythms, his daring quick-fingered runs and those weird intervals... it was all there. Also he lowly sings along with nearly every solo and has a wonderful voice... the band was good... they did one roughly 90 minute set, mostly of Tyner originals (which I couldn't really name), in between he did a standard (again, I knew it but don't know its title) without Bartz, and as an encore, there was a truly beautiful piano solo. For those who read german, I put up a much longer account here: http://forum.rollingstone.de/showpost.php?p=2505879&postcount=16
  8. Happy Birthday, Agustín!
  9. When did Associated Press start going into SACDs?
  10. Will catch McCoy Tyner's quartet at the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz - rather excited about it!
  11. BUT FOR CHRISSAKES AT LEAST MENTION IT'S *ONLY* MP3, OR ELSE WE CD-ONLY GUYS WILL ALL DIE FROM HEARTATTACKS! Thanks for considering!
  12. With "unofficial" you mean CD-Rs?
  13. Yeah, Wilson on the Anderza - one of the good examples, to my ears!
  14. Happy Birthday!
  15. Neither do I. @tranemonk: is there any particular reason for your, uhm, line of reasoning? Any insights that we miss?
  16. There's no need for a new thread at all, since there's one here: I'm sure no one gets mad if you post amazon or other bargains there, similarly to how here no one gets mad about someone posting about cheapo euro rip off sets. mp3, in my understanding, is about tracks, tunes, songs... an mp3 box set is a contradictio in adjecto, at least in my book.
  17. Discs one and two so far, going on for a few more hours... lovely music!
  18. Well, there's an i or e or whatever music thread somewhere - I've don't read that one, but I assume MP3 bargains could be mentioned in there, couldn't they? But then someone might tell us to "think outside the box", ya know
  19. Can't MP3 be kept in a separate thread, please? I still don't see how you can box bits and bytes and ship them by air mail.
  20. By coincidence I recently just dug out the one Phontastic LP I've got - the Washington DC concert from 1955 - a very nice one!
  21. "Hard Talk" is on Enja and easily available. Same for "Seagulls..." Don't think you can profit of such offers from outside the US, but I'm really hoping CAM comes around to releasing a Waldron box or two as time passes!
  22. That's what the writing on the back of the box suggests, yes. But in absence of tracklistings, the DEPanorama website isn't really helpful either (they don't seem to have any numbering that fits with the one on the website for the 10CD set). Same with Bruyninckx... too bad, but I guess then this 10CD set might be a good buy for someone who hasn't started buying the Storyville 2CD sets (of which I own six so far, eight more to go...) Bruyninckx has an album listing at the end of his Ellington entry, including the following: What are these? LPs that preceeded the Storyville 2CD sets? Or are these the original non-commercial transcription discs?
  23. Thanks - has to be further investigated then... didn't consider possible overlap with the DETS releases yet!
