The Complete One Night With Blue Note Preserved
king ubu replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
Same here, except I got the music when it first came out (on vinyl). Bought the first three LPs and skipped the fourth one! This seems to be the general consensus (that CD4 isn't that interesting), which is probably why it didn't circulate as much and is the most expensive now... Yeah but disc 4 has Jimmy Smith and Lou Donaldson plus some Kenny Burrell. I do know from reading about this concert, Alfred Lion wanted Hank Mobley to play, but Hank was no longer playing. He was in the audience. I wonder how hard it must have been for him seeing all his colleagues up on stage and he couldn’t be a part of the celebration. Not on the vinyl.. it has Charles Lloyd and this guitar player.... Jordan? What's that "that a friend" has? Inofficial? Check AMG for the contents of the four albums (CDs - same as on my LPs). -

Just dug out my LPs - the tracklists on the CDs are identical, indeed. Not sure how the whole thing compares to the four discs mentioned in the first post. But CD and LP releases seem to be 100% same. -

Got your package today, Eric - thanks a lot!

Yeah, I have "Chitinous" as released in 1971 in my notes, too - fantastic album, just played it (the Dutton Vocalion CD) again recently. A classic in my house!

There was a little "tree" with this going on here, a while ago... but in the meantime I snatched the four LPs - single LPs, no box or anything, but I got them all together in very good (mint or whatever them vnylists call it) shape for a good price. Haven't really played them all yet, though... -

Another one from yesterday's haul: Laurent De Wilde - Odd and Blue (IDA 1989), with Ira Coleman and Jack DeJohnette. Let's see if those "five spots" from Jazz Hot (sticker on the bottom left, mine has that one but not the "choc" sticker on top) were justified. Beginning is fine, but sound is, well, 80s...

Please don't take my comment as a verdict on what "our" Bill did or did not. The mere thought about what these criminals have possibly and likely done is making me feel sick! I'd honestly prefer living in a world were such things would never, ever, happen at all, it's utterly disturbing, no matter who did or does it, I just wish no one ever did even think of doing such things! -

This is indeed sickening and very disturbing. -

Happy Birthday, Louis! Thanks for all the music! Got to listen to other things in the next days, but have been playing some of his earliest music a few weeks ago - loads of fun! And very soon, tons of greatness, too!

"Yes." Oh, wait - is that "Yes" as in: more from the "Stepping Stones" sessions than was ever released, or "yes" as in "a more tangible answere will be available as the time to the release date becomes shorter"? If it's the first, it's great news! (Jim: funny Freudian slip with Shorter!) The first "yes." That is very cool news, then! I just hope that this will be available over in ol' yurp!

That question was asked several times now... guess it's "answers in your next life" "Yes." Oh, wait - is that "Yes" as in: more from the "Stepping Stones" sessions than was ever released, or "yes" as in "a more tangible answere will be available as the time to the release date becomes shorter"? It's Trygve Seim - none too difficult... can't put it phonetically, but it's rather easy to pronounce, too (can't think of an english word that has the same pronounciation as the "y" in Trygve though, but the first syllable is stressed, so it's 'Tryg-ve, and the e at the end is mute, similar to how it is in "the"... Seim... the "ei" is as in "aye aye sir", kind of :-) ) Anyway... that one looks interesting. Haarla makes some good music. The Trio isn't really happening too much for me, without Stanko, but I confess I only have the first disc (and found it rather boring, hence was reluctant to buy more). Me, I've just gave Miroslav Vitous' "Remembering Weather Report" a first spin today... I know it came out two years ago, but that's about as fast I get to new releases, most often. I quite enjoyed it!

Vinyl and CD - but the CD has the same 18 tracks (the UMS had 21, so 3 seem to be missing, but I didn't compare). This time I won't miss it! Ah, no... seems to be vinyl one - weird. Couple of weeks ago when I saw it first, I thought it said CD and LP!

Saw this on another jazz blog recently. Anyone have any idea what might be on the bonus disc of unreleased material? Might this not BE the Mosaic box, released by the content owner, Sony? It would have been simply leased to Mosaic for a specified period. Now, the rights have reverted to the owner. With the technical work done, Sony can release it without much new expense, just packaging costs. I don't have the Mosaic, but maybe the mastering was done by Sony people in the first place? Can someone look that up? As to 'unreleased material', could the reference be a bit outdated, and refer to content that wasn't out before the Mosaic set's issue? (And I disagree with the first poster -- considering EVERYTHING, I don't find Mosaic prices *ridiculous*.) It's not the Mosaic set, and the extra CD is from the previously unissued (now get this) SECOND HALF of the the Village Vanguard "Stepping Stones" concert. Essentially, Stepping Stones PART II. Woody and Michael had originally omitted it but Michael and Woody's son have brought it out of the vaults for Woody's fans to enjoy. It's also been remastered by Sony's SEVEN-time Grammy-nominated and THREE-time Grammy-winning sound engineer, Mark Wilder. So, this set is more complete than the Mosaic in terms of Shaw's Columbia recordings. Woody III co-produced, curated, and designed the new boxset for his dad. Cuscuna is behind the set and also did the new Dexter Gordon set coming out at the same time (all of his Columbia recordings), which also features Woody of course, plus new bonus material never before released, which also features more Woody. 2012 is looking more and more like a Woody year. "Stepping Stones" wasn't on the Mosaic... but what's that "Part II", then? Not the same bonus material from its Legacy CD reissue, but yet more? Expanding it to two CDs?

Nothing too commercial... Stepping Stones should have/could have been a double LP (or followed by a Vol. 2)... but the powers in charge didn't think so. What the CD did was restore the second album, but it had to omit a track from the original LP to fit in all the additional tracks. Happy owner of the CD and the LP here - great music, that's for sure!

Yeah... so Dorn being incosistent on the 32Jazz reissue would be kind of a weird homage to the Atlantic LP? ;-) But that's my best guess, too! Anyway it would be weird for Collectables to duplicate the same "newly found" tunes in their reissue... or would they have gotten the same remaster fron 32Jazz?

Thanks for the suggestion... but that's a bit pricey - maybe someone who owns it can check? Or someone can check if the latest/online issue of Lord's discography has any additions?

Wayne Shorter: Complete Columbia Albums Collection
king ubu replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've only heard very little of this, so it will definitely be of interest! -
I'm starting to explore Hank Crawfords early Atlantics beyond his albums with Ray Charles and "More Soul" which I've been familiar with for a while... so I got the 32Jazz 2CD set "Memphis, Ray and a Touch of Moody" (quite fitting a title, methinks) as well as three Collectables twofers (one has his "The Soul Clinic" paired with Leo Wright's "Blues Shout", the others are "Dig These Blues/After Hours" and "True Blue/Double Cross"). Checking the Bruyninckx discography, there's something weird about the second session for "Dig These Blues" (New York, December 10, 1964). Bruyninckx says there were three titles recorded (actually four, but an untitled blues remains unissued): 8392 These Tears 8393 Dig These Blues 8394 The Crazy Saloon 8395 untitled blues (unissued) 8392/3/4 were released on Atl LP1436 ("Dig These Blues"), but according to Bruyninckx, only 8393 is on the 32Jazz 2CD set. At the end of the third session for the album, there's a not stating that: [..] "Memphis, Ray and a touch of Moody"; this set includes two possibly unissued titles, "Banana Head" and "It's a Sin". So the two tracks missing from the album (These Tears, The Crazy Saloon) were replaced by Joel Dorn for his 1997 2CD set with two others (Banana Head, It's a Sin)? So far so good, but now the Collectables disc I got (COL-CD-7659 from 2004) also contains those two tracks and omits the original two again! The original liners that are (partly?) reprinted in the Collectables twofer mention "The Crazy Saloon" ("there is the easy rocking, invitation-to-kicks of...") as well as "These Tears" ("And then there is even a touch of rockabilly, laced with wryness, in..."). The liner notes of the 32Jazz set list "Banana Head" (#15) and "It's a Sin" (#17) as the name of the titles (on disc two), but in the discographical listing two pages earlier, the tunes are called "The Crazy Saloon" and "These Tears". Anyone knows more about this? Are those just variants of titles? Some funny goof?
