  1. Weird... amazon.de and amazon.fr differ, the German site lists an eighth track ("Satin Doll"): http://www.amazon.fr/Olympia-mars-1965-Thelonious-Monk/dp/B0000457G9 http://www.amazon.de/Live-Olympia-07-03-1965/dp/B0000457G9/ But these are the same discs (same ASIN No.) As for the LaserLights, there are three volumes as well, but no tracklistings on Amazon that I can see: Vols. 1 & 2 (March 6) http://www.amazon.fr/Thelonious-Monk-His-Quartet-Olympia/dp/B00006IJ09/ Vol. 3 (March 7): http://www.amazon.fr/Thelonious-Monk-His-Quartet-Olympia/dp/B000084HE4/ With these LaserLights being identical (from what I've seen/heard so far) with the Trema discs, I guess that Vol. 3 then would be the genuine March 7 set and it should be identical with the 7 or 8 track Vol. 3 from the links on top? The Hyena you're talking of is this one here, right? http://www.amazon.fr/Monk-Paris-Live-At-Olympia/dp/B0000CC82Z/ I recently ordered it, but am still waiting - might not come through in the end. RYM gives 1965 as year of release: http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/thelonious_monk/monk_in_france/ Discogs gives 1961 as year of release: http://www.discogs.com/Thelonious-Monk-Monk-In-France/release/2750426 I guess both aren't to trust...
  2. Nah, great cover! And great news it's new stuff (didn't doublecheck myself yet, will do so before buying...)
  3. Happy Birthday!
  4. I fell out of the mailing list... thanks for the update. Here's hope the McPhee will indeed come this year! The Konitz/Solal has a "t" too much there, btw.
  5. Yes, these are just more of the "collector's edition", it seems - there have been 30 or so of them, discussed further up in this thread... cheap if you go for the jewel case versions (5€ or some) and more expensive if you opt for the (nice, four-fold) digipacks. The Davis I'll definitely grab, and call me crazy, but I might go for the Wilen again, just for the cover! And Eric, in case you're interested: do some reading further up, most of these tend to be rather shorter than the previous issues (which coupled some albums or added some EPs etc, while these new ones stick to presenting the contents of original albums - hence the original cover art). There where were a few of the first batch that had new music, in the case of "Les tricheurs" even never before released music. All details further up in this thread!
  6. Listening to this for the first time. It really highlights Hawk's influence on the early 50s R&B saxophonists. Yes! That's a very good one! Love the long track! And as Allen says: I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk I love Hawk
  7. Nice one! Got it a few months ago, have to dig it up again!
  8. Lon, you might enjoy this one: http://www.amazon.com/Chica-Chocolate-Olivia-Ruiz/dp/B001LV5OHG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305201492&sr=1-1 (samples here) As for being weird... I ordered the three Barry Sisters Collectables twofers last night, after having (for the fifth or sixth time in the past year) played their "Our Way (Tahka-Tahka)" three times in a row again.
  9. Very sad news indeed. "Uptown Blues" is what came to mind first... and I fully agree with JSngry - he was one of the very best lead trumpet players ever!
  10. How unbelievably sad: Zim Ngqawana died of a stroke, aged just 52. http://www.capetimes.co.za/musical-genius-zim-ngqawana-dies-1.1067111
  11. I know... I was hoping there was some better site somewhere... the label has no website, wiki is incomplete, amazon's a mess (listing the Jazz House label in several variations)... guess there's no other way than to search and compile, alas.
  12. get this one, quick:
  13. Does anyone know where to find more information about recordings made at Ronnie Scott's in London? Lots of music has appeared on Jazz House, more recently some on Candid, as well as on Harkit (all gone now, were they a bootleg operation? I missed out on them completely, too bad about the Rollins discs!) Wiki has a short and very incomplete list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Scott%27s_Jazz_Club
  14. Huh? Just from vendors I see it that cheaply... from Amazon itself, it's 11.54 right now. Too bad or I'd have jumped at this! The price may already have gone up again...
  15. OK gotcha on content of sets, thanks. On royalties Mosaic don't pay royalties but will pay a sum to the copyright holder where there is one. You can be very sure that Universal, Sony/RCA and EMI don't pay when they don't have to i.e. for their european issues of pre-1960 material. They no more own it than anyone else, but they own artwork etc. So we all ought to have bought US RVG CDs, I guess, at least in the eyes of some folks... (well, in some cases I did, to evade the darn copycrap over here).
  16. more of this: discs 5 and 6 today - awesome!
  17. No, the Rollins is from Universal Italy as well. As for local stores: I guess no one there knows who this band called Art Tatum is (probably a prog-rock outfit from Italy). But Miles of course... the big Columbia box is still around everywhere, so another Miles box certainly caught the attention of those in charge.
  18. The number of discs IS different, because, as I said, these reissue THE ALBUMS, not THE SESSIONS. Hence the Rollins has one more disc but omits the Miles and Farmer and whatever other sideman dates the 7CD set included. The Tatum Group has more discs, too, because in the 6CD set from earlier, the sessions were re-grouped (discs filled). So these are no reissues of the old Fantasy boxes, rather bundled reissues of OJC discs (and again, what the "remastered" note means, I have no clue). As for royalties... I get it now - slower than others, sorry... naïve question: if Universal Italy or whereever from releases music from beyond the 50 years barrier, wouldn't it still pay royalties? I guess not, huh? And when Mosaic made the Lang/Venuti box, for instance, they only paid royalties for the half of it that back then wasn't yet 70 years old? Oh, and the Miles box is around in stores here... I think I might have seen the Monk, too, but the Miles seems to be around regularly. The others haven't made it over here yet, either.
  19. Miles Davis - All Miles. The Prestige Albums Duke Ellington - Carnegie Hall Concerts 1943-1947 Bill Evans - Riverside & Milestone Albums 1956-1963 (Remastered) Thelonious Monk - All Monk. The Riverside Albums (Remastered) Sonny Rollins - The Prestige Albums (Remastered) Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces Art Tatum Group Masterpieces Not sure what the remastered note really means - I just took it from the site... would have to compare some of the Rollins, but as you all know, I don't care too much about that.
  20. Are you talking about the Fantasy boxes? They're perfectly legal, cheapo releases from the source (which over here is Universal). They come as Original Jazz Classics reissues in boxes, rather than as reissues of earlier boxes - minimal work done, I guess, quite unlikely that anything was remastered for this. The only one I have is the Sonny Rollins and I can only talk about the booklet/documentation of that, accordingly: it's minimal, 20p leaflet, the cover on the left side, discographical info and tracklists. Here's the entry on Universal Italy's site: http://universalmusic.it/jazz/album/?ida=306445
  21. Another World is a worthy and unique Getz album--I'd like to have it on CD actually. Yeah, having checked a little closer, I guess I'll really buy this one! Wonder what the band with Corea, Clarke, Williams and Airto sounds like! And the bits I've heard of the LaVerne band weren't half bad, either. Next time you'll be on your own, buddy! Thanks Flurin! Btw, "intestatario", it dawned to me, has to mean something about testicles... probably because if you got a gold card you have "cojones" and visit Silvio's bunga bunga parties... just put your name there and you'll be invited!
  22. Enjoyed discs 3 and 4 of the Johnny Smith earlier today - and enjoyed it an awful lot, too! Wow!
  23. Yes, has to be the name on the card (I don't actually speak Italian, but it's easy to figure out... you merikins better learn some, might be useful in a few decades when yurp will be all islamic and you'll have to fight wars over here again )
  24. Any idea what the shipping charge is to the US? I've gone to the site, but it won't tell me until after I give them my credit card, and I don't want to do that just yet. (I'm kind of proud of myself to have gotten that far with a language I'm unfamiliar with!) Quick guidance: Aggiungi al carrello = add to cart Procedi all'acquiso = Proceed to checkout If you're already client, pick: "Sono già cliente, e la mia password è" = "I am a returning customer, and my password is" Choose the address Choose shipping method (I get "Standard" & "Express") The "regalare" thing is for gift options (check it and they'll appear later on) Enter/pick your card, hit "Continua" ("Potrai controllare tutti i dati prima di ordinare" means "You can review all your data before ordering", so it's safe to hit that!) And then you'll get the overview, including shipping costs. And with "Ordina" ("Order"), you'll send in your order.
  25. So - you went for it then ! Sound good? Yes! As I just typed in the other thread, the "The Swingers - 12 Jazz Favorites by The Four Freshmen" (arr. Bill Holman) is the one that gripped me most, but all four are nice! Now playing: Dionne Warwick - Promises, Promises (the cover of my LP looks much less stellar, but it's one of the few of these cheapos that has no seem-splits at all)
