Oh, and is "The Duke's Men" available on any CD?
-
Been playing Carney all evening now (mostly from 50s Ellington albums), after having listened to the marvellous strings album again in the afternoon. Also played the two Ellington sides from "The Jazz Scene" (on the album, Ellington is billed as leader, the discographies list them under Carney's name - how come?) Also played the Wax sides and the three tracks from the Jimmy Hamilton Blue Note session that are included on the "Blue Note Swingtets" CD, and also the fine Timme Rosenkrantz date on Vol. 2 of Storyville's great Continental Sessions discs. Will also dig out the HRS and Capitol Mosaics (the later for the Rex Stewart and Louie Bellson) later. What are your favourite Carney moments? What are his finest moments with Ellington? Most loved solos? One of the best from the music I've played this evening must be his solo in the first part of "Black, Brown & Beige" - what a marvellously constructed solo! And the tempo is just perfect (the alternate seemed much too fast!)

some info here: http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=u1ARTU0000005 Ha, I knew I had him on some CD... CHARLIE PERSIP SUPERBAND - NO DUMMIES ALLOWED Label: Soul Note Code: 121179-2 I'll have to dig it up, but I do think he can be heard soloing there.

I'm aware that it's not going to change fundamentally, yes! We continued up to episode four of season three. What kept annoying me (though a bit less after a while) is that the weird sect (that's how I look at "the others" at this moment... some sort of semi-degenarate leftovers of whatever that "Dharma Initiative" was) keeps taking a big part of the screen time yet you're not told anything about them, and the three captureds don't seem to really ask many questions either... the scriptwriters probably have no idea themselves
-
finished the second season of "Lost" and watched the opening episode of season three just now... hope it won't continue that annoying (so many "unknowns" and so much silliness in the dialogues...)
-
Well, I did get the fairly recent 4CD set w/Trane and stacked up on the single OJCs. The session w/Monk & Bags is of course covered in the Monk Prestige 3CD set. So I still have much of this on CDs that are reissues of original albums (12 inch albums that is... some of the early material would have to be presented on much shorter discs if they'd stick to the original 10 inch or singles or whatever releases...)

Well yes, Ana Lucia brings some new aspects to the setting, that's true for sure! But it's like half of the time I enjoy that and the other half she annoys the sh*t out of me (though she's a looker!)
-
up for some air... Destination Out and Star Bright are gone (both shipped), the two Konitz/Marsh discs are on hold.

We'll stick to DVDs for a while... Yes, a hell of a ride! I still have a hard time getting into the "mystical" aspects, like the black smoke monster crap, but as most of what happens CAN (but there's no need to if you don't want to) be explained rationally, I don't mind it much. I watched episodes 13-16 yesterday, eight more to go, and then we'll continue together with Seasons 3 and 4 - the later is only half a season really, because of the writer's strike. Five isn't even out here yet - they're showing it on TV, but as we don't have any recorder and I'm not home on any given day for several months in a row, we'll just wait for the DVD... seems Season 6 had/has a rather good start as well!? Oh, and I'm looking forward to Ana Lucia's disappearance from the series (seems her and Libby were thrown out for drug and driving under the influence and other issues, so they had to be shot, quite obviously )
-
she don't need none of that silly voice/pitch-correction crap that ALL r'n'b chicks use these day.. that alone should make it worthwhile to check out!
-
not sure how to help you about the right pronounciation... both syllables of his name seem to have no counterparts in english at all... best might end up something like "gay-run", but then the "ay" is a straight, open, german/latin/whatever "e" that you don't get in english, and the "run" is one of the typical French ones, ya know? "an", "on", "en", "in"... it all sounds different in French, but it's hard to make the distinction if you're not a natural speaker.
-
I'm halfway through the second Season of Lost by now (watched 3 entire DVD over the weekend!)
-
Sad news! Seems like a silly way to go, too! Indeed a most reliable trumpet player, yet one that doesn't get enough attention, it seems... he must be on dozens of sessions on the Vogue Masters and Jazz in Paris series! The bonus tracks on the Golson date pale a bit, compared to the main album, but Guerin is mighty good there!

Ok then, this is a first for me... I'm not going to turn into a semi-pro at selling stuff here, but I've been meaning to do this for quite a while, to get rid of *some* duplicates (I still can't part with some other stuff, though). I'll try and keep prices low, let me know if you see something that makes you think I'm out of my mind or anything... no offense intended! Covers are mostly in perfect condition, CDs are used ones, so they have some scratches... I'll try and put comments that seem accurate to me, but bear with me, I'm doing this the first time and have no idea of the business lingo! Shipping will be at cost. I will ship without jewel cases (except for the one sealed item, and the TOCJ if you badly need the white tray!) Payments would be preferred in Amazon or CDuniverse gift certificates, and accordingly I'd prefer to sell several discs at the time. I only have a free Paypal account, so I'm not sure I can accept payments from credit cards, so I'd prefer going the gift certificate route. I can't guarantee very fast shipping, but hey, we have time, don't we? Send me a PM and post a comment here, and in case my PM box gets filled up faster than I can empty up some space, send me an email! XXXX GONE XXXX first, something else though... Bud Shank/Bob Cooper - Mosaic Select 10 (3CD) I have a used copy (disc 2 has a minor scratch, the box is scuffed as all these Selects are because the cardboard boxes are too large... I always wondered why Mosaic doesn't produce them a little bit smaller... anyway, other than that it's in very good condition and unplayed since I bought it from an amazon marketplace seller for 53€). So here's the deal: I'll trade it for a new or similarly very good (booklet has to be excellent!) copy of the Lester Young 4CD set, which is readily in print, and costs 68$. We'd do this just straight, I send the Select, you order me the Pres (or send me your own box). I'm open for discussion, but I will NOT give the Shank/Coop away for any in-print Select! XXXX GONE XXXX Ok then, here we go with the sale... 25$ / 18€ - promo Curtis Amy - Katanga! (Blue Note "West Coast Classics", has some scratches but played fine the last time I listened to it... this goes for crazy prices on Ebay and Amazon Marketplace... still, if you think 25$ for a less than perfect one is too much, let me know! This had a promo sticker on the front booklet, which I was able to remove, it left only very small traces where it was.) 15$ / 11€ Dizzy Reece - Blues in Trinity (Connoisseur CD, some scratches) SOLD - Dizzy Reece - Star Bright (TOCJ, some scratches - let me know if you need that white tray...) Dizzy Reece - Comin' On (Connoisseur CD) both sold 10$ / 7€ - new, not sealed, but never played Warne Marsh-Lee Konitz Quintet - Live at the Club Montmartre, Vol. 1 (Storyville) Warne Marsh-Lee Konitz Quintet - Live at the Club Montmartre, Vol. 2 (Storyville) 8$ / 5€ Chet Baker - Plays Standards (Jazz in Paris, digipack, played only a couple of times) John Patton - Along Came John (Blue Note, 2000 edition, scratches) John Patton - Accent on the Blues (Blue Note, Amazon.com CDR, unplayed) Count Basie - Blues by Basie (Columbia, straight reissue of the 1950 LP, selections from 1938-1950) - ON HOLD - Kenny Dorham - 'Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia (2CD, old version, 1995) Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity (ESP, Abraxas edition, with paper to fold around jewel case) Grachan Moncur III - Some Other Stuff (Connoisseur CD, some minor scratches) SOLD - Jackie McLean - Destination Out (Connoisseur CD, some minor scratches) 5$ / 3.5€ - SEALED Dave Brubeck - Three Classic Albums Plus (Avid 2CD, contains Jazz Red Hot & Cool, Newport 1958, Jazz Goes to Junior College plus St. Louis Blues from the first Timex All Star Jazz Festival) 4$ / 3€ - new but not sealed, cut-outs (Telarc Archive twofers) Erroll Garner - Dreamstreet & One World Concert Erroll Garner - That's My Kick & Gemini Erroll Garner - Magician & Gershwin and Kern - get all three for 10$/7€ - then, on to the cheap stuff... 4$ / 3€ Pat Metheny / Ornette Coleman - Song X (Geffen, old version, played once or twice) Bill Evans - You Must Believe in Spring (Warner Bros. Masters digipack, without bonus tracks, played once or twice) a couple of old BNs: Hank Mobley - Workout (some scratches) Hank Mobley - Soul Station (some scratches) and a longer list of old OJCs (Mikulski and ZYX mostly or all, and most may have some minor scratches): Cannnonball Adderley - Quintet in San Francisco John Coltrane - Lush Life John Coltrane - Traneing In John Coltrane - Settin' the Pace John Coltrane - The Believer Thelonious Monk - Monk's Music Thelonios Monk - with John Coltrane The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, Max Roach) Sonny Stitt - Kaleidoscope Frank Wess/John Coltrane/Paul Quinichette/Mal Waldron/Doug Watkins/Art Taylor - Wheelin' and Dealin' and finally some rock: 5$ / 3.5€ - played once or twice - all old versions! The Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead - Live/Dead The Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead - get all 3 for 13$/9.5€ - 7$/5€ - old version, some scratches Bob Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes (2CD) -------------- shipping estimates (all for stuff without cases, it may get a bit more for the digipacks and plenty more if you want the Dylan w/case, otherwise it would be in the 9€/18$ category!) 1CD (if I manage to stay under 50g) = 1.65€ / 3.3$ 2-3CD (less than 100g) = 2.5€ / 4.5$ 8CD (less than 250g) = 4.5€ / 8$ up to 500g = 9€ / 18$ (prices to Europe / US etc respectively)

organissimo - ALIVE & KICKIN' - new live CD/DVD
king ubu replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Announcements
Gee, that's not that many! But if you're happy, that's cool! I guess from the fan's perspective, it's hard to stay realistic about sales numbers sometimes! Anyway, good luck with this, once more! I'm sure I'll like the disc... hoping as with the previous three, that the new one will be even better than the one before it! -
Duke Ellington Duke Box on Storyville: opinions?
king ubu replied to David's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't know why a search doesn't bring up the right pages (didn't work for me either, but a google domain-search did). Here's an earlier thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=32097 And here's the Ellington corner, where I tried to link several useful threads about Ellington, including the one about the Duke Box: Addition: if you want the Fargo, I'd get the longbox 2CD version, which has an amazing and detailled booklet! Even though I got the Duke Box (which has one page of notes per disc), I kept the Fargo set because of all the documentation! -
Seems to be Danish if the info on CDUniverse is correct: The Hilversum session is something different, it seems:
-
Devendra Banhart!

Ah, yes - sorry, misread that. Never managed to track down the two "Three Originals" 2CD sets, so I was very happy about these recent reissues!
-
Don't skip the Burton Greene!

organissimo - ALIVE & KICKIN' - new live CD/DVD
king ubu replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Announcements
How many orders by now? Mine was 211! Alas, I went the cheapest way, as my purse is suffering these days... still in a post x-mas depression -
One (the Live) only has two albums, I think. Great stuff!
-
I might be willing to part with it eventually... will have to give it some thought. I got them fairly expensive though. Maybe a trade would be best, for instance for thePres 4CD set. But I'm not sure yet what to do... I still want a real copy of the Pacific Piano Trios! (A friend lent me his set and I made a copy, at least... but I have that, I want the actual thing!)
-
This is slightly off topic... about the Living Space CD: all the material from there is on the Classic Quartet 8CD set, right? And what exactly is on Infinity that one doesn't have if one has virtually all there is to have on Impulse/GRP CDs? Just a few different versions w/overdubs, or is there anything that's not yet been on any CD? Where's that little box with all of Trane's late studio sessions, please!?!
