  1. Each time this thread pops up I think: "again!?" Don't the US have more important issues to think of than this chap? The funny thing about sports is that in some kinds of (soccer, hockey...) it's part of your image to have lots of affairs (and have ones with your best buddy's bird, too - unless you're captain of the UK team, then that's not a smart thing to do), but golf is oh so elitist clean and everyone has a perfect white shirt, of course of course... - effing hypocrites all over!
  2. Saw Elina Duni and her band last night - wonderful music! She's from Albania originally but has found her home, it seems, in the Swiss jazz scene. Her band is stellar, with Colin Vallon at the piano, Bänz Oester on bass and Norbert Pfammatter on drums. Very sympathetic, to say the least, and as much at home doing straight stuff as well as odd metres, which are needed in some of the tunes, as Duni does mostly traditional songs from the Balcans (from Roumania, Greece, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria...) and in between she does some Gainsbourg, Ferré or (as last night) Nick Drake ("Riverman", also the closer of the new disc). Check out some of her music, she's really good! In two weeks, Yasmin Levy will play here - anyone seen her in person? I have two of her albums and like them a lot, but I'll be at Abdullah Ibrahim's concert the night before, so I'm not sure...
  3. Marvellous package, just got it and flipped through the book - wow! Thanks for letting me know about this reissue! Will report back once I've listened to the set, but that might be a while...
  4. Reminder to self to haul down this set ! I'll gladly help if I can get it after you've finished listening Now playing: the (I hope) well-deserved Pacific Piano Jazz Trios - disc 1 right now, the Freeman is delightful, the Twardzik truly amazing... played the Rowles a couple of days back, so it's on to the Fischer afterwards... Anyone knows why the two bonus tracks from the Rowles session (an alternate and an unissued "All the Things You Are") weren't included here? They're both on disc 3 of the Complete Nocturne Recordings Vol. 1, and Pujol there says both were given to him by Rowles to use there. That set seems to be one of the few legitimate things coming from Fresh Sound (besides of course the FSNT series), and it's a delightful one!
  5. Got me a used copy of the Cherry set last week, now the only one I don't have (besides the Gismonti on ECM and the unreleased Metheny) is the trio set with Rubalcaba - how's that one?
  6. I'm pretty sure the Dragon Miles four cd set has been cleared and made legitimate; back in the mid-nineties when all the Miles boots were bing pulled from the shelves and not able to be reordered that one (and in its DIW form as well) was always around and remains available. Same for the Europe 1 concerts releases on Trema. All legitimate. Which was not the case for the Esoldun CDs. Their only connection with the government-owned organization was that the music was 'borrowed' from their vaults. That's good to know for both sets! But what about the LaserLight versions of the Trema discs? It seems back in their early days, LaserLight did some legit stuff (like three volumes of Jazz in Baden-Baden discs featuring Oscar Pettiford, Donald Byrd and many others), but nowadays they look like a blatant rip-off, too...
  7. A fine disc indeed! I think it was mentioned on the ECM new releases thread... I kept it myself, in case anyone wonders!
  8. The Red Baron Snoopy Snoop Dogg (edit for typo)
  9. Jack Frost Albert "Iceman" Collins Edgar Winter
  10. Happy Birthday Wes! Long time no see! Still truckin' around the Mexican border?
  11. just finished: Duke Ellington's 1955 Armory Washington concert to be followed by: Ornette Coleman - The Empty Foxhole Ornette Coleman - Ornette at 12 Ornette Coleman - Crisis
  12. Arsène Lupin Thomas Hobbes Jean Calvin
  13. Many of Ornette's early tunes and solos have what I'd call a "tonal center"... in fact I've seen a transcription of a solo from "The Shape..." and it was mostly in C Major - with some liberties of course, as is to be expected.
  14. Just in case... 1969 has not yet been quite 50 years ago, so these are boots even here, as usually - to my knowledge - the radio stations just had the rights to broadcast these concerts ONCE. There were the INA/Esoldun CDs 20 years ago that originated from the radio vaults in France, but they had to be pulled and are to be considered bootlegs just because of that. I assume more or less the same applies to the "Pour ceux qui aiment le jazz" / Trema / now mostly LaserLight releases, and also to some of Dragon's radio vault releases (Miles, Rollins, Blakey...). I don't know if any particular releases have been legally cleared though, I'm just guessing...
  15. Late again... joyeux anniversaire!
  16. Happy Birthday, Jon!

  18. I bought quite a few when they were around cheap a year ago (Al Cohn, John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Blossom Dearie, the Dixieland set, Harry James), but the one that really looks great to me (I have it but haven't started listening so far) is their Hoagy Carmichael box. It's one of those cardboard boxes with the CDs packed in thin sleeves and a little booklet added. I guess the sound there will be lacking as well, but then where else can you find ten discs of Hoagy?
  19. Gee - I hope they're asking a bit less for CD-Rs!? Quite a bad surprise! I ordered all the Lyons discs a couple of months back (except "Nuba" which I had to get used from amazon marketplace) and added a George Russell one to that order, luckily it was all real CDs.
  20. I got started with the Atlantics and then went backwards to the Contemporary albums later on. Finally I just bought the Gambit edition of the Hillcrest Bley recording - fascinating stuff! But somehow to me it still feels as if the "real" Ornette kicks in with "The Shape of Jazz to Come"!
  21. This is the website of CAM Jazz, the current owner of the Black Saint/Soul Note catalogues: http://www.camoriginalsoundtracks.com/site/index.php?site=&path=home There's nothing about the boxes there yet, though...
  22. Threadgill is cool! Will be looking for it! The Haden is weird... mostly sideman or collectively led stuff, no? A bit of a hodge-podge!
  23. Coq au vin Turducken Turk van Lake
  24. scored a clean-looking copy of "Ornette at 12" yesterday - for around 20$ or 12-13€ or whatever - of course it has a drill hole through the cover... found "Crisis" in the same price range a couple of years ago... very cool to have them both now!
  25. Fine disc, which I have in my collection thanks to brownie's huge generosity
