Well Chuck, it's not *that* bad, "Lost" is only the fourth series we're really watching (including "Californication", which was hilarious and hard to be believe it came from the US, but not including "Twin Peaks", which is way more than just some series...). We watched "Alias", just for the fun of it, and then much of "24" (not yet seen Season 7), and now "Lost". I mostly keep busy revisiting classics of cinema from all over (including the US, latest was Frankenheimer's "Seven Days in May", very good one).

Just watched the first five episodes of Lost Season 4 - holy crap! We're hooked again! But there will be a break after that as Season 5 still costs serious $$ as it can only be imported.

Charlie Haden Montreal Tapes Box Set
king ubu replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No - you can check out the contents (tracklists, that is - you'll need to compare with the older CDs or allmusic or something else) here: http://www.amazon.de/Montreal-Tapes-Charlie-Haden/dp/B0024Y5Z0K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1258467956&sr=1-1 -
Thanks, will look into it when I do my next ebay-bidding!

That Piano Select is really getting expensive these days... Ebay Piano Select flurin got quite a good deal for his $90 ! Yeah, I had 100$ in as a maximum bid (and that was the total cost including shipping - it's on its way by now)... and newbie that I am on ebay (I bought about five discs in the past ten years...), I would have been totally lost to keep up with the guy/gal who bade (is that the correct verb form?) against me during the final few minutes... glad it only arrived at 90$ before ending! The best way to bid is to wait until the last few seconds and then place a bid or use a sniping service that does it for you. Bidding early only invites others to try and outbid you and it drives the price up. I see I still have a lot of learning to do there... don't like the word "sniping" in this context, but I guess I'll have to look into that, eventually... the price stood fairly low until the final few minutes, so I don't think I've driven up the price to my own disadvantage.

Charlie Haden Montreal Tapes Box Set
king ubu replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I can be bought at Amazon, at least on their European sites. I've got all the Universal/Verve sets except for the one with Rubalcaba, so I'm not going to buy the box. -

Done with Season 3 of lost, watched a whopping 7 episodes yesterday It got better and better after around the middle of it, I found, but there still were some slow and boring moments. Now I guess we'll get started with Season 4 tonight - this will be a fast one, to be caught in 3-4 viewings (14 episodes only). We don't have Season 5 yet, it's still way too expensive over here, as it still is on TV right now!

Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz Live Boxed Set
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
spoilt as in "you get CDs for half as much money as we get them here"... not for Bush, war, tea parties, health care (or lack thereof) etc... -
Yes... the total lack of interest is somewhat disappointing... can't be the prices, I guess... Would also have expected some offers for the Shank/Cooper set, but then most here seem to think 80 or 90$ way too much for a Select, while I was ready without the slightest reluctancy to pay that much or more for the ones that disappeared last year...

Excellent film indeed! And lots of great music making in it, with his family (Ramblin' Boy is a fine album, btw!) as well as with friends (including Keith J. - just so you know...) and some great footage, too, most notably from that Lisbon concert with Ornette's quartet where Charlie was arrested! A superb musician, and I think a mighty fine person, too!

I watched the beginning of Season 1 of "Dexter" on TV, found it quite good, but because of it's plot they moved it to later and later starting times (and maybe eventually they just wanted to get rid of it... the way to do that seems to be to have a series start later and later, and eventually no one will watch, so they can cut it using lack of interest as a reason - morons! Instead they'll put up more moronic "I want my 15 minutes on TV" shows, but it seems there are so many idiots around that feel superior to the idiots taking part in all these casting shows that the system will work for another while...) Anyway, end of rant... We're two thirds done with Season 3 of "Lost" by now, and while it got better and had moments of terrific suspense, alltogether it seems like the low point so far, lack of ideas, whole filler episodes (such as the blonde chick and the Latin guy and their diamonds... cool idea to bury them alive though, I admit). Hope the short-cut Season 4 will pick up some steam! Lots of Season 3 was also paced too slowly for my liking. I found it less interesting than Season 2, even though I had seen probably a third (but not one complete episode) of it a few weeks earlier, when Ms. ubu was watching it... I caught up in a frenzy, watching Seasons 1 & 2 within just two weeks, and that was a hell of a ride, and I just feel Season 3 doesnn't hold up by comparison!

Happy Birthday, JohnS

Happy Birthday, Hans! Ahm, John, ahm, all these men called "Hans"... (hey, I'm only paraphrasing Ingeborg B., so don't shoot the messenger! ) -

Assuming this is a sincere question, it makes sense when you're shipping internationally. It saves a significant amount of postage expense. I really did not realize how much it costs to mail the jewel boxes internationally. I recently ordered some replacement jewel boxes and was struck by how flimsy they were. I guesss they are all fungible to a large extent. Yeah, there are various kinds of replacement jewel cases, and usually they're packed and labelled and priced the same, but they come in varying quality! That does suck now and then, but still, shipping w/cases can get ridiculously pricy very fast, if it's not within Europe (but even there, you'll quickly note the difference, it's the same price to ship 1CD w/case as 3CDs w/out them!)

Here's the mail Jan Ström sent out in December 2008: Dear Ayler / Silkheart customer, From January 2009, Ayler Records will be run by my friend Stephane Berland in France. The storage of Ayler CDs is now moved to France but there could be a “vacuum” for shipments during some weeks. Stephane has during many years made the sleeve designs and managed the two web sites and he will run the label as usual. The address to Stephane is the normal one: ayler@ayler.com and the catalogue can always be checked at www.ayler.com. The Silkheart records are also to be ordered from Stephane. Catalogue at www.silkheart.se. However, there may occur delays in the transition period. I will still take part in the work with Ayler/Silkheart and I will for instance continue to make hardcopies of the Ayler “Download – Only” (DL) catalogue for those who want to have these as complete CD-Rs instead of doing the download work. I also have a small storage of “Ayler Records Artist” T-shirts and some 2 Gb Memory sticks with the Ayler Records logo. Important: If you want to order any of these items from me, the address from now on is: formtex[at]algonet.se or jan[at]ayler.com. I thank you for the great communication we have had during some 8 years and I’m sure you will see many interesting releases from Stephane in the future. Wishing you a great holiday season, Jan Ström Box 20 SE-61040 Gusum Sweden +46-(0)123-20531 formtex[at]algonet.se jan[at]ayler.com

Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz Live Boxed Set
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I must have gotten lucky or something because I only placed my order Thursday night. I ordered it from Amazon. They say it should be here in a week and a half or so. Looking forward to it! Getting hold of those Storyville boxes can be an adventure. gregmo you guys are so spoilt! you can easily obtain recent Storyville releases through amazon.de (or amazon.fr - it's always worth comparing the prices, sometimes amazon.co.uk might be an option, too). we yurpeens order from the US often and just live with shipping costs of 10$ or so for a single crappy disc (and the jewel case will be uselessly crunched half of the time, too...) -
Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
king ubu replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That sucks indeed! But then I thought labels such as Revenant and Ayler Records would check these issues before releasing anything? Or would the demands be so ridiculously high that they just jump ahead and hope for the best? -
up again... I got a Pacific Piano Trios set coming to me (I hope... didn't hear from the seller) from ebay soon. Bud Shank/Bob Cooper - Mosaic Select 10 (3CD) I have a used copy (disc 2 has a minor scratch, the box is scuffed as all these Selects are because the cardboard boxes are too large... I always wondered why Mosaic doesn't produce them a little bit smaller... anyway, other than that it's in very good condition and unplayed since I bought it from an amazon marketplace seller for 53€). So here's the deal: I'll trade it for a new or similarly very good (booklet has to be excellent!) copy of the Lester Young 4CD set, which is readily in print, and costs 68$. We'd do this just straight, I send the Select, you order me the Pres (or send me your own box). I'd also be willing to give away the new and sealed copy I have in trade for a new or excellent condition Pres set. If you have any other offer to make, drop me a line!

Yes indeed - I can ship three discs without jewel case for the price of one disc with jewel case. Makes sense to me! I got stuff from other guys here in all conditions and shapes, with cases, without cases, with multiple discs packed into one case, etc etc... all's fine with me!

Yes, and he has that great clarinet spot there... although he hardly variates it, I love to hear it! It's one of the most infectuous Ellington tunes! On the Hodges concert from Berlin (on a Pablo 2CD set), Carney plays it on baritone sax for a change - pretty cool!
