  1. Saw them a couple of weeks ago - quite a lack of variation, dynamics and space to breathe... but hell I liked it! They seem to go for broke all the time, and the music isn't just virtuosic, much of it actually did have something going in there. Drummer Dan Weiss was amazing, playing tabla and half a kit built around the tabla drums, switching to and fro... certainly the finest pale-faced tabla player I've yet witnessed!
  2. Chico is on "Cul de sac"? Wasn't aware of that! He wrote a great score for "Repulsion"!
  3. Razzle Dazzle Robert McNamara JFK
  4. James Cagney Humphrey Bogart Ida Lupino
  5. Those two are on their way now! I'm not totally conviced by these yet... they are wonderfully musical, no denying that, but somehow they seem a bit tame and lacking edge. As of now, I still prefer the earlier albums.
  6. Hm, I'd take the French ones, but not sure I can afford right now... maybe at end of March if you can wait so long?
  7. There's a cheapo Sony version that came out a few months ago, I'm sure it was discussed here. It's perfectly legit, and I think it even has a small booklet with the discographical info (but don't nail me for this, I have the big box!). It's a "wallet box" or how they call these, cardboard box the size of a regular CD, more or less, with the discs packed in cardboard (or paper) sleeves. Nothing fancy, just a great way to sell the music cheaper to those who wouldn't go for the expensive big box! However, there are several Spanish and Italian versions around (Comet is one, from Italy, not sure which of the Lonehills/Jazz Factories etc has released it in Spain).

    Neil Young

Not right now... I bought so much lately, Neil Young is just one of the bunch (others include The Band, Joni Mitchell, Talking Head, Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Kevin Ayers, Emmylou Harris, Devendra Banhart, Cat Power... in no particular order). But I'll keep my eyes open in case I stumble over any other of the live Archives discs for a good price!

    Neil Young

I listened to some young back in high school, but only in the last few months I've been getting deeper into his music, having bought most of his early albums by now. The sort of decisive moment was me seeing "The Last Waltz", after which I went out and re-familiarised myself with some of the guests (and getting on a major Band trip, first!). I don't yet have Young's debut album, but "Everybody Thinks...", "On the Beach", "After the Goldrush", "Harvest", "Tonight's the Night", "Zuma"... what an great run of albums! I also dig "American Stars'n'Bars" a lot! How many volumes are there so far in the live archive series? I only have the Fillmore disc with Danny Whitten - another great one... what others are there and how are they?

  16. I agree. Like 'em so much that I went and bought both JPN Toshiba vinyl editions as well ('Surging Ahead' PJ-0067 in fabulous Mono) from MC's wife on eBay. Great sounding, they are! So she was selling his vinyl behind his back or what?
  17. Led Zeppelin... haven't played any since I was 14 or 15... not bad at all! And this one here, for laughs:
  18. For the record: I was comparing the 1993 Japanese CD reissue of the Rowles album and the same tracks on the Mosaic Select. I know, and I was adding a(n admittedly unqualified) comparison of the Mosaic Select and the Nocturne box. The original Liberty vinyl (heavy vinyl as a matter of fact) has excellent sound, engineered by John Neal, produced by Harry Babasin. And what do your ears say about the Select vs. the Nocturne version?
  19. Yes - and you can get in touch with the folks from Südwestrundfunk (SWR) here: http://www.swr.de/swr2/programm/sendungen/jazz/-/id=659242/vv=email/nid=659242/did=661414/15alseh/index.html I have received session logs from their archives several times, they're very kind and usually pretty quick in answering! They might even know in which hall of the Liederhalle Art Performed (and all of that would be on their typewritten logs, where in handwriting they also added notes about the music and at which dates which tunes were broadcast etc). And I forgot to add - great to see the series going on, and great to see the fine Stuttgart concert released!

  21. You mean he didn't know the composer of "JATP Blues", "Blues For Norman", "Jam Blues," and "The Opener"?
  22. I'm no audiophile, but I think the Rowles on Fresh Sound set sounds about the same as the Pacific. There's no detailed info about their remasterings, but the Nocturne box was done in collaboration with Babasin/Harte. There's no info if there are still any masters around, there's just one name for digital transfers/masterings given in the booklet.
  23. Garance Marcel Carné The Mamas and the Papas
  24. Ha, you're all too generous! I don't drive, so I have to come on the back of a horse or some such... or hope no one will slit my throat on the greyhound Anyway, I'll bring some Jever pils to make sure you'll allow me in!
  25. Well, this isn't about competition, really... the Rowles album is a bit of an outsider in both boxes, and the rest has no overlap. But still, it's worth pointing out what a fine set that Nocturne one is!
