  1. Bismillah was one of the greatest! the scatological amendment, so to speak...
  2. Bill, I found that Old Time Jazz LP (the blue one) at the used book store recently! Good to see it's a recommended one! Haven't played it yet... paps: try some Jimmie Lunceford! Frémeaux have a 2CD "Essential" set, maybe you score lucky with some Chrono Classics... brownie helped me get the full (?) run of the Masters of Jazz of his, and I have the Columbia 3LP set. Brilliant stuff, but also out of the scope of this thread, I think (but then it's you who listed Wilson, so...) and speaking of Wilson: if you don't have the Billie Holiday Columbia recordings, there's a cheap wallet-box edition of them out now for very few $$ - glorious music! I'll follow this thread myself, for more 20s recommendations!
  3. The 'Sleepthief' should be good. Saw them a while ago in Birmingham. A German/Brit/US combination that works ! I skipped the whole festival... too tired and too exhausted from all the pre-x-mas stress... Next up: Depart, December 20th
  4. bought the recent Fresu/Towner (Chiaroscuro) as an x-mas present for my mother (I think...) - sounds pretty nice! source and more
  5. So can anyone say something about the three different editions of this? There was the old Verve disc (jewel case) (which I have) Then the VME And most recently the Newport Anniversary edition pictured above (I have a few of that series, but still need others) Do the VME and the 50th Anniv. editions use the same remastering? Which one is to be preferred? Is the old one bad enough to be upgraded or is it ok?
  6. maybe Suzie Q. - excited about the whole CCR 40th Anniversary box!
  7. I like the "healthy curiosity" bit... but it might at times become just a wee bit unhealthy, I admit... I also like MG's advice about beer... does it apply to red wine, too?
  8. Well, 300 bucks for 70 disc IS a BIG FAT bargain, at least for us poor ol' yurpeens over here! I still won't buy it, but consider this: you get the whole box for the price you pay for 8-10 "nice price" CDs sold at regular prices (like RVGs, Verve Originals, or in the better bygone times, OJCCDs of the not limited kind). I know that you can't flat out compare prices for single discs with box-sets, but the Coltrane box usually can be had for around 90 bucks here. (I had one bought and sent to me from the US, for 35 bucks in total... even though it was a hassle for the friend who bought it for me, I don't think I could find it that cheap over here!)
  9. Thanks Bob! In the very worst case I'd hang on to my Conns, the TOCJ and look for some japanese edition of "Soundin' Off"... There are still a few acceptably priced (but quite higher than Mosaic) copies on offer at amazon... haven't gotten a shipping confirmation, the order is "en course" since ten minutes after I put it in. Hope that's not a bad sign. It's not quite as bad with Swiss customs, alas, but I guess they now need to search additionally for hidden minarets in larger packages...
  10. Yikes ! Seems that someone at Mosaic was thinking about 'Reece Witherspoon' instead of 'Reese Wetherspoon' (sorry ubu, couldn't resist ). The Dizzy Reece Mosaic Select sounds great, by the way ! And may I recommend the Tony Williams as an alternate, if you don't already have it? Ï'd have gone for the Paul Chambers... but they already seem to have processed a refund and told me to keep the Witherspoon as a gift (Captain Reese James?) No shipping confirmation for my amazon order yet, but I keep hoping...
  11. Same here, it's in all the shops as well - but I won't buy it, that's for sure!
  12. "all else" was supposed to be "everything else"... so the answer is: the new box set, previously it wasn't in any box set.
  13. I can totally relate... I am wrapping up my studies, have a rent and some other expenses to pay, but have a small but regular income, and every now and then, the dreaded sales bins (and Mosaic "last chance" sets) are just getting too much. But then the signs are there by now that the CD era is winding down, at least on a broader perspective... I've mined the Blue Note sales close to exhaustion (the only one I can think of that I still need is Duke Pearson's Honey Bee, which weird enough *never* turns up in the regular BN sales here). The small catastrophe at Mosaic a couple of months ago tore a hole in my budget, and I already had the Beatles mono box on order at the very same time. Yeah well... I'll just sit it out and cut down my expenses for a while now Having no major obligations of course helps, otherwise I'd definitely have to change my buying behaviour. As it is, I spend it all on CDs, books, the occasional magazine (The Wire, also I subscribe to Jazz Magazine from France and Songlines from the UK), newspapers (I'm an addict...), going to the movies (rather than buying DVDs), and occasionally to see live music, too.
  14. Ok, big relief, my amazon.fr (final copy!) order is beyond "change order", it's already being processed! I guess I'll just have Mosaic send me another Select instead... and of course I'll pay for the Witherspoon, although it was only on my "possibly buy" list...
  15. crap - they feghed up and sent me the Witherspoon single instead of the Reece select!!! Seems the Reece is now gone... I just ordered another one somewhere else - fegh fegh fegh!!!!
  16. Sorry for the confusion - the BN was one CD, the Mosaic was 2CDs (or 3LPs)
  17. Allen, this one's available - there was a 2CD Mosaic (which I don't have, alas): Also some Chrono Classics, I guess... yup: 1927-1939, 1939-1941, 1941-1944 - I have the first one, more great music! The Verve Elite disc is fine, if you can get it I wouldn't hesitate! I think it was the very last VEE I got to complete my collection.
  18. Thanks a lot! That must have been the shortest time between "ordering" and getting a shipping confirmation ever!
  19. I didn't want to imply you hadn't seen the description - it's just that the Hep site is such a pain to navigate, that instead of a dozen of us going there and searching, I thought I'd rather quote it here I didn't want to imply you hadn't seen the description - it's just that the Hep site is such a pain to navigate, that instead of a dozen of us going there and searching, I thought I'd rather quote it here
  20. I missed Brubeck... still too easy!
  21. he did a jazz-leaning one before, but it didn't do much for me (too smooth, synthesized strings, etc):
  22. http://www.hepjazz.com/1000.html Doesn't quite look like my bag... but Sagajazz has two nice volumes of "jazzin' the classics" if you like that (sounds like you do). They should be around cheap, too!
  23. Gee... I guess we can have ourselves sent to the same asylum some day... just make sure to bury that back-up HD under the bridge before it's too late, so we'll have some music in there...
  24. PM sent for the George Wallington!
