I don't know much of Kagel's work, but the few bits I've heard (and read) have certainly tempted me... one of the names to check out some day, that's for sure. Interesting biography also. r.i.p.

Another big for this set! Love the sessions with the 'tines and w/Booger! The trios didn't seem that great to me, either, though... but I don't remember them being as dull as clunky describes.

Another WOW! from me! Likely this one has been discussed in some Conn or general BN reissue thread before...

I recommend surface shipping. No charges for my last two orders although they both exceeded $100.... But they don't offer surface shipping for orders over 100$ any longer - or have they changed back again? In fact, surface packages much more often went through without taxes for me as well, but since Mosaic changed their policy of shipping, I don't have much of a choice with most orders... the most annoying one was three Selects plus two Singles and 35 or more $ of taxes on that... the taxes themselves are only two thirds, the rest goes directly to the postal services for them having to cash in the money... they ask for roughly 12$ (12 CHF) for that here, crazy!

Yes, thanks for the info. No problem in buying from Mosaic at all - still I was hoping for a good deal, safer as far as custom taxes go, etc... Anyway, does that mean the Euro contingent sold extremely fast, or does it mean that they deleted it quickly because of a total lack of interest?

More early Blue Notes on this marvellous disc, which is - surprise! - on Proper: http://www.propermusic.com/products.asp?recnumber=230

He plays on screen and on the soundtrack of Antonioni's classic "La notte" (1960) as part of Giorgio Gaslini's quartet. I don't think any of that music has been released. I'm not sure, but possibly Volonté turns up quickly on the first Gaslini "Intégrale" (vols. 1/2, that's a series of double CDs, see the Gaslini thread for more info), but I can't remember for sure. But "La notte" has quite a nice soundtrack (though Fusco's musique concrète fits better with "L'avventura" and "L'eclisse"... but in "La notte", the jazzy sounds are fine).

Now touring the UK ! Ingrid Laubrock Tour I'll see if I can get to that gig in Exeter. They'll play Zurich as well but I think I'll miss it - too much going on, and there are some other concerts I want to catch, like young Romanian-Swiss singer Elina Duni, and also (off topic) Zim Ngqawana, the South African sax player. Loriers is mighty fine, agreed! And as a small side note: that type you're using, hepcat, is incredibly hard to read on the web, even for rather young eyes as mine. Sans-serif is better, and the italics make it worse, too... sorry for that nagging, but I've wanted to say that for a loooong time
-
Yeah. That one is turning out to be elusive as a 'deal'. As is the Quincy Jones. I scored lucky withthe Q - or relatively lucky. Found it at a local shop (the European Universal edition of course) for about the prize Mosaic is selling it or somewhat less. No shipping, no possible taxes, so I didn't complain. Same deal I got on the Dizzy, but those two were the first ones to turn up at acceptable prizes. They have Selects now and then, but those they're selling for twice the Mosaic prize...

still no Buddy Rich

same as with the Ellington and Webster boxes?

Yes, the search function is a bit hit and miss, it seems - doing a google domain-search is more helpful. You find more, but then there you don't immediately see the thread titles and have to open the hits to check out which is the thread you wanted.
-
COMBO, that's the group with additional percussion and trumpet, right? Love them, too... will have to check out some of Braff's releases, mainly I have live recordings so far.
-
Hey, this sounds interesting... I don't know about those previous 9 Tatum CDs, but as I haven't caught up with any of Storyville's Tatum releases yet, except for the Transcriptions 2CD set, this sounds good! I'm lagging behind though, having only just gotten their Ben Webster set...

I started a duplicate thread - here's what I posted there, will delete it now:

Art Pepper-the Complete Galaxy Recordings
king ubu replied to jazzkrow's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
ah, yes - now I remember - I also bought the Mingus Debut when they did the second round and had the big boxes... hm, seems I was wise back then not to replace any of the sets I have already. my list looks similar to clunky's: - Mingus Debut (big box) - Tatum Solo (disk cases only) - Tatum Group (cube) - Evans Fantasy (cube) - Evans Riverside (disk cases only) - Pepper Galaxy (cube) - Monk Riverside (disk cases only) seems it depended on luck and coincidence if you ended up with a "disc cases only" or a "cube" box back then... -

Now will she turn into a messy or a learned cat? Either way, I'm hoping for the latter and that old Mr. Wiesengrund is the reason why this is her favoured place now: -
Thanks Lon - I'll be patient then and wait until it turns up eventually! Tommy, thanks a lot for another strong endorsement of the Town Hall sets. It's just the sheer amount of music (and the $$ needed to buy the whole series) that makes me a bit hesitant. Another question: there are two Neatworks discs with alternates, in addition to the Chrono Classics. Are those worth getting as well?
-
Ha, took me a while to get over thinking all that dixieland and trad stuff was corny, too... now I'm slowly catching up with Condon. Had the opportunity to pick up his first four Chronological Classics for an ok prize and now I'm starting to sort things out, as I have much of that on cheapo sets (Quadromania 4CD boxes) by Bobby Hackett and Pee Wee Russell (and some also on the set by Wild Bill Davison). Now what I still miss are Classics 1947-50 and 1951-53. I see AMG lists a 2008 release, Classics 1954-55, but neither Abeille Musique nor Amazon.fr are listing that one. Has it already been released or is that an AMG goof? I doubt that, as they do indeed have a cover picture. Lon already tipped me off on the Town Hall Concert series. I'll have to look into those as well some day. Here's a previous thread dedicated to them: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=7847 The fact that there's quite some Lee Wiley on those might help me deciding to buy some, eventually (in fact, Wiley is likely a major factor in me starting to dig these trad guys... got the Condon mob, but missed the Condon Mosaic - which leads to the next question:) What about those Collectables twofers: Jam Session Coast to Coast/Jammin' at Condon's, Bixieland/Treasure of Jazz, Midnight in Moscow, do they cover all of what's been on the Condon Mosaic? (previous thread about that one having gone OOP, but no discography there) And where would/does the overlap start between those Collectables and Classics?

Believe me, he was! I've seen them all, and Kronberg was all fire and ice, where the others where still searching where to go. He was what he played, instantly, authentically - Lauer always sounds to me like an intellectual who mentally understood what people like Trane did, but has none of the guts associated with it. He's from a different world, as is Sauer - always that sour (pun intended) tone, rarely any beauty or real soul or groove. That's what I miss the most with the players over here, a touch of black soul and groove. Well, maybe that's just me. But too many players to my ears are playing for their own self-seaching, not enough for music for its own sake. You should really check out Malcolm Braff then! Now there's a yurpeen pianist (ok he was raised in Senegal, I think, but he's looking as caucasian as you and me, except for the wild mountain of hair surrounding his face). There's someone with all the fire and life and lots of courage for both the beautiful as well as the wild and freakish (the drummer of his best band, BraffOesterRohrer, Samuel Rohrer, is one of the best currently active anywhere, in my opinion - should be of interest to you as well, a very creative and unusual musician, using little instruments and unusual components with his drum-set). I think your assessment of both Lauer and Sauer (I had to stay away to make such a pun, almost did it as well) is pretty much correct. Though to defend Lauer a bit, as I said, his trio with Michel Godard is fun - at least he was able to see that he might need some kind of musical/emotional counterpoint there, to his own German self (no offense intended, but I guess you know what I mean!)

How Walkable Is Your Neighborhood?
king ubu replied to catesta's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, similar here... nearest grocery store is some Aldi or some such... there must be at least 100 stores inside of Zurich where you can get anything any effing Aldi has to offer, but then I assume anything smaller than Aldi is beneath Googles megalomaniac radar - and I bet it's better if it remains like that! -

on a closer look, I see I'm surrounded by yoga schools... ouch! looks like a promotion map where those who care enter their details... almost everything of any relevance is not listed - thank you google, you do a great job, very reliable! too bad so many people are so dumb and actually do rely on google (and wiki).
