Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?

lotsa music from the rusty sucker - no sonic issues to my lousy ears, whatsoever ... been listening to the sessions that ended up (partly) on the albums "Empathy", the Gary McFarland album, "Trio 64", "Stan Getz & Bill Evans", "The Bill Evans Trio Live", "Trio '65", "Bill Evans Trio at Town Hall Volume One", and now I'm into the "California Here I Come" material. Will wrap it up with "At Montreux Jazz Festival" in the end. -

A Thought Regarding Universal now owning Blue Note
king ubu replied to margolbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, they could do lotsa bit boxes using Blue Note, ex Fantasy and other stuff ... they could even group all official Mogie albums in one place now ... not sure any of it will happen though. While I don't mind big boxes with classical, where I tend to listen work- or artist-based, I feel the notion of albums in jazz isn't that a bad one, after all ... sure, I love chronological listening and complete sessions and stuff, but still so much of the music at debate here has been around on single discs and so many of us bought so many of 'em ... is there really much of a market? I'd not go for a Jug box even if the one or two I still miss aren't around on CD or would cost more than usual. Just makes no sense, really. And it seems the market is so much smaller (compared to classical) that "but there are so many newbies who don't have the music" is likely no point ... not sure today's newbies want cheapo box-sets anyway. -
the complete jazz at the philharmonic 1944-49 on verve
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
this is the 4 CD set, covering some 1953/54 concerts - incomplete as well, but as I wouldn't know where to find the music elsewhere, I got it ... I'm sure glad I never tried holding my breath for Verve/PolyGram/Universal bringing out the sequel(s) to their great 44-49 box - me face would shimmer in many colours now if I had -
A Thought Regarding Universal now owning Blue Note

Well, they could just go further down the Universal Italy road ... there's loads of Fantasy (Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary ...) material they could bundle (loads, really ... Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Heath, Johnny Griffin, Gene Ammons, Jack McDuff, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Don Patterson, Teddy Edwards, Shelly Manne ...) but then would that sell? When you see numbers, usually they say jazz is selling only a very small percentage of the numbers classical is, so ... Anyway, EMI boxes they could revive (if that's all they do) aren't that many ... Herbie Hancock and Dexter Gordon (both 6CD set) come to mind. But if they want to re-package, there'd be some names I'd expect to sell somewhat easier than the ones just mentioned: Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard ... they could also try Hank Mobley, Bobby Hutcherson and a few more, of course. And they could do a Larry Young box -
wow, very good

sounds like, indeed don't know a lot of his music yet, but what I've heard I enjoy a lot! way too young to go

Didn't pre order, yet. I did notice on the amazon.co.uk site a picture of possible liner notes in Korean was added. Really? None of that with the French set ... I think the Korean sets so far all were coming from EMI (now Warner)? And all the ones I wanted (the violinists ... Martzy, Morini, de Vito, and just a few weeks back also Ferras) were rather expensive (each of them around 100$) and not that widely available (I bought from prestoclassical and JPC, the Ferras for instance is not available through amazon itself, or was not when I looked). Anyway, amazon.it just sent me a mail stating the shipping date for the Russian box might be between April 18 and 28.
-
I think there's some info about them in the booklet of the Hawkins Keynote 4CD set ... there are plenty of "overtime" tracks there - glorious stuff!
-
Ordered the Russian box by Ansermet, too - but it's already out of stock and they don't even have a date yet - but the price went down the decisive couple of euros (preventing the custom n*zis from kicking in), so I'll just wait patiently

Album Covers w/Three Women Who Are NOT The Artists
king ubu replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
not The Artists (whoever those are) but The Puppini Sisters (want a new thread for albums covers with three dames called sisters that aren't? ) Oh, and artists they are indeed, at least in my humble opinion .... retro shtick, of course, but -
Mine doesn't have that issue (nor did the one I held in my hands in the store ... that one was sealed so I can't say anything else about it). Where did you buy yours?

Which Dizzy albums would actually be really essential, anyways? Besides the music with Bird and the early Big Bands on Savoy and RCA (and Uptown and other live recordings)? There's a large number of excellent albums (the Mosaic going OOP right now has plenty of them, for instance, there's the 1956/57 big band, the Granz pairings) ... I'm not sure myself, I might arrive at a list like this: Gillespie/Rollins/Stitt - Sunny Side Up Dizzy Gillespie at Newport (1957) Stuff Smith & Dizzy Gillespie That's a short list which certainly does not amout to enough 50s/60s Dizzy for sure ... so I might throw in some of the live music like the excellent "Gillespiana/Carnegie Hall Concert" twofer or some of the stuff from Paris ... maybe "Perceptions", or more likely the MPS album from Berlin 1968 ... as good as the band with Moody/Barron was, I'm not sure I'd dub any of it "essential", but I'd really not want to give the music away, still.
-
Done! Actually thought about him, but forgot to add him as I did w/Murray and Waldron ... Those Lindbergs look indeed mighty fine! I only know two or three of his discs on other labels (between the lines mostly) as a leader and they're very good.

wiki's BS/SN entry lists three albums ... not sure how complete that listing is though

I know ... but inheritance laws tend to help those that have amass more ... and ought to be changed. But we're not allowed to talk politics here
-
But the descendants still have the right to withhold simply because they want it ... to me the notion of inheriting works of culture is an extremely odd one in general. I find it hard to grasp that sons and daughters should hold any rights to a book or piece of music or art created by their father or mother. Now with spouses, that's a different thing, but I can't come to grips with the fact that maybe there's some seventh-grade cousin to Lester Young's bother's grand-grand-grand-child and that cousin has any claims to make there.
