april is national organ donation month
Dave James replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My daughter, according to her surgeon, has less that an hour to live when they replaced her liver. Her body had taken on 60 lbs. of fluid and she had become incoherent. It remains the worst few days of my life. I respect the fact that your are an organ donor, but I still can't see the humor in making fun of this. If that makes me a jerk, I guess I don't care. -

I don't think you guys would find this so FUCKING amusing if you had a daughter who had a liver transplant at age 17. This is serious stuff and you're treating it like it's some sort of nod nod, wink wink, elbow in the ribs yuk. Trust me. It's not. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. -
Marc Myers from JazzWax did a piece on Glasper a couple of weeks ago. I was intrigued enough to DL Black Radio from iTunes. I've listened to it a couple of times, but the jury is still out. At times, it will strike me as interesting and at others, I don't hear anything very deep or engaging at all. I give the guy props for trying to produce something that will resonate at multiple levels, but I'm not sure he's there yet or if he ever will be. It's like he's trying to be too many things to too many people.

Charlie Parker Records 30CD set
Dave James replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Jim, just curious. I would venture to say that most of us on this board are not blessed with the ear of a trained professional musician. That being said, what are the chances that any of us would notice the pitch problem on this set? Also, do you know if the whole thing is off or just some of the sessions? -
I'll admit to being impressed by this interview with Magic Johnson. While it remains to be seen what he and his partners can make out of the mess that is Dodger baseball, he sure says all the right things. I'd have to think that most fans are cautiously optimistic. There's no way this could play out any worse than the last seven years. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7756922&categoryid=2378529

The Yankees trade for Michael Pineda is looking shakier by the day. Since Spring training began, he's had problems with his velocity and now he's apparently tweaked something behind his shoulder. He'll undergo an MRI on Monday, but right now, I'd say his chances of being on the opening day roster are pretty slim. I just hope whatever it is that ails him can be determined and, more importantly, corrected.

These two recent AT&T cell phone commercials crack me up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLd4zOxAguM&feature=endscreen&NR=1 -
Frank McCourt paid $430 million for the Dodgers in 2004. Since then, he's run the team into the ground and now, seven years later and in the midst of the worst recession since the 30's, it's worth $2 billion? Not sure I can pencil that out. But, that's not all. The gilt on this lilly is that the $2 billion will be paid in cash.

I saw that. Looks like want to force you to make a choice. Either opt in to their pay for play plan or dump the online paper altogether. While I will miss the comprehensiveness of what the Times has to offer, I can get what I need elsewhere. The real question is what's behind this. It could have been their plan all along to reduce the number of freebies or it could indicate that they've not done as well as they'd hoped in terms attracting paying customers. If I had to guess, I'd say it's the latter.

For sure one of my all-time favorite R&B artists. Hope he beats this thing cold. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7yF8CJM1kg

I recently discovered I saw Larry Harlow in 1970

Didn't you mean to post this in the "Guess Who" thread? I'll go ahead and take a crack at it anyway. Atomic Rooster? -
Jim, take a seat. I'm not quite sure how to break this to you, but I live in Hillsboro, Oregon and I got the same picture. If it makes you feel any better, she's 3.1 miles away from me so should you decide to take the plunge, you'll be able to get to her faster.

My older brother was, and I followed both for a while in the John Beradino & Erika Slezak days respectively (I think Luke & Laura was the tail end of that period). That woman from Who's the Boss was on One Life to Live, IIRC. Was Tommy Lee Jones on GH or another show? And Donna Mills? Did you know that John Beradino played major league baseball from 1939 - 1952 with the Browns, Indians, Pirates? He was a middle infielder. Career average: .249. Tommy Lee Jones was on General Hospital. Not sure about Donna Mills. Elizabeth Taylor actually appeared in one episode. Demi Moore's first role was on that show.

My soap opera addictions when I was in high school never included Dark Shadows. I was a General Hospital, One Life To Live guy. And, as much as I hate to admit it, I got sucked into Days Of Our LIves in the early '90's, but I managed to shake that off after just a couple of years.

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Never been to Detroit. Visited New York once when I was around 10, Philadelphia, never. I think my choices, since I made them when I was just a kid, were probably based on how much I liked a team's uniforms. I know I loved the silver wings on the Eagle's green helmets and the winged wheel on Detroit's sweaters. And the Yankees? Who doesn't love the Yankees?

Why is Goodell waiting to drop the shoe on Jonathan Vilma?

Rex Ryan and Tim Tebow in the same locker room? Be still my racing heart. I'd love to see the look on Young Tim's face the first time Ryan cuts loose with one of his epithet laden rants. He's going to need an industrial strength, weapons grade set of noise-cancelling headphones.

I guess I just don't get it. Nonetheless, according to my brother and several of my friends who are active fantasy league participants, if you don't do it, you don't understand the allure. My perspective has always been that if you do get involved, you wind up rooting for individuals and not for teams. That's no fun for me. I'm a Yankees, Eagles and Red Wings fan through and through. It's been that way for decades. Those are my TEAMS, not my PLAYERS. The fact that the media has pushed this to a whole new level should not be terribly surprising. In the 24/7 world of televised sports, this is just another way to fill up air time.

Adele overtakes Pink Floyd album in biggest-selling list
Dave James replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Here's some very early Adele, prior to her Susan Boyle-like transformation. I enjoy her...She has a pleasant enough voice, but I find her to be kind of one-dimensional. -

Looks like Peyton Manning has chosen to take his talents to Denver. The Tim Tebow fallout should be fascinating.
