  1. I have an Apple Mac (desktop) using Sonoma 14.6.1. My interest is ripping and burning CDs. This used to be easy. These days, I seem to be tech-challenged.
  2. Would anyone recommend this one? https://www.amazon.com/Unitek-External-Portable-Compatible-Desktop/dp/B0DD3SH1NX/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_ci_mcx_mr__d_sccl_1_1/139-6464352-9634047?pd_rd_w=qzDIQ&content-id=amzn1.sym.c2ce25da-4d17-4f37-af20-bde98a9f0bcd%3Aamzn1.symc.d3391730-f670-41da-8b34-61787b3edb82&pf_rd_p=c2ce25da-4d17-4f37-af20-bde98a9f0bcd&pf_rd_r=NYSW5Y8961RGBPAP3ETH&pd_rd_wg=T0eb3&pd_rd_r=51140dfe-0e85-40c7-b521-9cc4c1d1f334&pd_rd_i=B0DD3SH1NX&th=1
  3. I have to open the drawer with a paper clip, there is no light, disc does not spin. I'm done with it.
  4. It is an Apple computer. The setup requires an adapter on the CD drive cord.
  5. Has anyone used this for ripping, burning, and even listening to CDs? I just received this today, and I can't get it to function at all. My previous CD drive (LG) worked fine on my old HP computer and my current Apple Mac. This one...just a problem. I tried a host of troubleshooting trips and no luck. There were a lot of good reviews on this, so I am surprised. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
  6. Very cool indeed. Randy Weston has not been well-represented in the 1980s. The Brooklyn Academy disc is interesting for having such a large band--a fairly rare thing for Weston.
  7. I like Steve Slagle quite a bit, though indeed his visibility is low. He is a fine player who is also skilled on flute and bass clarinet. I like his co-led records with guitarist Dave Stryker. Even on their individual records, these long-running collaborators often appear together.
  8. Steve Turre has been on the label for a while now. The one I like best is Colors of the Masters.
  9. Steve Slagle...was he mentioned? I can't say that I read this entire long thread started decades ago.
  10. Isn't #10 a Mingus tune? I have no idea on the artists.
  11. On the basis of making records with Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden, Ginger is OK in my book.
  12. Randy Weston lived in Morocco for at least 5 years. Talk about immersion. He also ran a night club, so you could say that while he was bringing even more of Africa into his music, he was also bringing American jazz to Africa.
  13. Sounds like this could be quite good. The band may be similar to the one on Social Studies (1980), my favorite early Carla Bley album.
  14. Does this mean that Threadgill himself is NOT playing?
  15. Sounds interesting.
  16. I've noticed that Joe Lovano is (not surprisingly) doing several concerts honoring Coltrane; I think the first is in a few days in St. Louis. I have enjoyed Lovano's takes on Coltrane, which are found in most sustained form on Steve Kuhn's Mostly Coltrane and Compassion (co-led with Dave Liebman). I believe Joe is using a quintet, rather than the more expected quartet. Anyone know who's in this band with Lovano?
  17. I know he was with The Great Jazz Trio along with Tony Williams: Love for Sale.
  18. He had some deep ties with Dave Liebman, including the band Quest.
  19. Abdullah Ibrahim's Bombella is an outstanding record with WDR.
  20. Raymond Chandler is an absolute great, though I've wondered if he would have been even better without the restrictions of the "whodunit" format. I have to say, I haven't heard of several of these writers. I'm guessing most of them are living and active.
  21. Although I have read my share of mysteries over the years, my preference really is for crime fiction that does not feature the overworked "who done it" formula. In my younger days I liked the James Bond novels, early Forsyth, early Ludlum, etc. That was more espionage stuff, but I think these days I would prefer more "noirish" works--James M. Cain and work in that vein. I also like Elmore Leonard, though I have not read much of his work. I am looking for atmosphere and suspense--not so much mystery.
  22. It would be interesting to hear (among others) "Equinox," "Mr. Syms," "Body and Soul," and "Spiral." I guess some of these were cut off..."Spiral at 1'47."
  23. Good point that these two pieces have basically not been heard in live versions. Not much from Giant Steps has been heard live--mainly "Naima" and "Mr. P.C."
  24. OK, I see I skimmed the info. But how revelatory will this be? And what price are we dealing with?
  25. I don't mean to sound grumpy, but two songs? And I always thought "Satellite" was one of Trane's lesser compositions.
