It turns out that the thing died. I could never get it back on, and then I did have a computer guy look at it--and he figured motherboard and at least $350. I now have a new computer, and I may put up some concerns on a new thread.

Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings
Milestones replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's a nice set of music for a single calendar, and this one before Coltrane became Trane, jazz legend. But I've got most of it, and as much as I feel I need. -
Kevin, That is interesting, the business with the external hard drive. I've had an external drive for some time now--a couple of years, at least. Maybe it would be good to disconnect that drive each time I shut down and restart?

I'm pretty woeful on this computer stuff. The Windows issue is interesting. For what it's worth, it seems to be 8.1. The thing is, if Windows is the issue, why this problem now after so many years?

Here is some of the info, though I think I've updated Windows. In general, it runs quickly; and there is plenty of space still on the hard drive. I have had the computer since the summer of 2013. I've gotten into a strange situation with my computer lately--a Dell. When I shut it off (generally for updates), it takes forever to come back on. By forever, I mean about 4 hours. I've never had anything like that before in 27+ years of owning PCs. Any ideas? Is this a sign that the computer is dying?

Would 11 and/or 12 be Gene Harris?
-
That's a record I would like to hear.
-
#10 is "St. Louis Blues." Now this for sure sounds like Ben Webster. But I think the pianist is the leader. #16 has a Kenny Burrell or Wes Montgomery quality, but I'm sure it's neither one. The phasing at first sounded like Kenny's, but not the tone. As I listen more, it seems closer to Wes. Otherwise, I'm stumped. Numbers 11 and 12 sound like the same piano-led track. The final track is a decent swinging number seemingly superimposed over a porn scene.

#7 sounds like "Bye Byye Blackbird," but something else is quoted. #8 is "Easy Living." Ben Webster? Maybe, but I doubt it. #9 "Summertime," but not one of the 50 or so versions I have heard.
-
#1 sure sounds like "Jump for Joy." I can't say what artist. #2, as pointed out by BillF, is "Symphony Sid." Again, I don't know about the artist. #3 sounds a bit like Jarrett, with that humming and keening going on. But the tenor solo would seem to toss that out the window. #4 is good funky organ stuff, but I guess my knowledge is not big enough to speculate. #5 sounds a bit like Wynton atop a parade rhythm, but it's probably someone else.

I think I'll wait and see what winds up on YouTube. -
Kennedy Center Honors TV show 12-25-18
Milestones replied to cliffpeterson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
How much of that music will actually appear during the televised show? Could it possibly be all of it? -
Album Covers w/Is This Barbara Feldon Or Not?
Milestones replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Perhaps not, but she does well as a look-alike. -
Well, I'd certainly favor Jethro Tull, ELP, and King Crimson over at least 50 artists in the Rock Hall.
-
Really? So how do you define "popular"? Every record by Yes in the 1970's went gold or platinum. The Moody Blues had roughly equivalent sales in those years. This was bested by Emerson, Lake & Palmer--whose first 6 albums went gold. In addition, is popularity a key factor in a group entering a Hall of Fame?
-
I respectfully disagree about Prog Rock. While sometimes it has been regarded as pretentious--and in actual fact has sometimes been pretentious--I and many others have found value and enjoyment in this music. We are talking about Yes, Moody Blues, early Genesis, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, and the biggest of all: Pink Floyd. This is a serious strand or genre within rock music.

Kareem Abdul Jabar.

I am enjoying Tony Bennett's A Swingin' Christmas--from 2008 with the Basie Big Band. I don't think I've ever heard such heartache in "Christmas Time is Here."

I think we should re-energize this thread. I have actually done fairly little to follow Joey, other than his several appearances on John McLaughlin records. Oh, and there's the Yoshi's record with Pat Martino, which to these ears is about as good as guitar-organ-drums gets. I've recently been checking out Reboppin', which has a lot of good tracks, as well as the two-disc Christmas album. In short, he seems like someone I should look into more deeply.

John Coltrane for Rock HOF! I can guarantee he has been an influence on many rock musicians.
-
Gotta say, though, that "Time of the Season" is one of the greatest British rock songs of the 60's.
-
Don't mean to be cruel, but how about having more than 5 songs that anybody ever heard?
-
Seems to me that Jethro Tull and King Crimson are the two groups most deserving to go in and yet continue to be snubbed.
-
Anyone familiar with Joey Defrancesco Christmas--Home for the Holidays. It's two discs, and it's not bad--just been delving into a bit. There's a smoking version of "We Three Kings."
