  1. Mosaic mentioned NPR posted a preview of one track, Gingerbread Boy, from 1967. NPR
  2. jcam, let me know how you go with that one if you get a chance. Have come close to picking it up a couple of times but it gets mixed reviews. A solo Sonny disc is mighty tempting. According to the board it's a dud, dude. Like most things there are easy ways to pre-listen rather than punt - though punting is fun... http://youtu.be/_PwVBEcUUzk I listened to the album on YouTube (again) last night (not all the way through), and I agree it's bad. If Sonny is that critical of his own playing, what was he thinking releasing this? Not that most of his other Milestone albums do not contain a lot of crap.

  4. Have you heard the Jazz Icons DVD? It's really great.
  5. It all goes back to this, French RCA, 1981: Not sure how THAT got released, but it was the first - and last - vault-dipping into RCA's fairly expansive Rollins holdings (Coda once pulished a discography of all known unreleased sessions, and the list was pretty...mind-boggling). Sonny heard about this, immediately put the kibosh on further sales of this item (a few got imported into the US, but not many), went lawyerball on RCA and the final deal was that the vaults would forever more be sealed, this little bit of leakage excepted. I'm pretty sure that not everything that's still left in there is going to be worthy of release. But the stuff that came out here was such a joyful mindfuck at the time, that I've got to think that there's more of merit to be found, if/when Sonny reassessess his attitude. And funnily enough, watching the material on this set come out on the RCA box and the various individual releases of 60s Sonny that Bluebird did, people who hadn't known any better just assumed that it was all of a piece and so many of them were all holy shit, this is GREAT how did THIS get so overlooked, and the answer is, because it's never really been heard until now, that's why. Thanks for this bit of history. Out in Japan in one package as After The Bridge. It was already on my list, but now I'll definitely get it Discogs CDJapan I have had the Village Gate stuff on a hard drive for a couple of years, but largely neglected it thus far. I might get the Solar release for convenience.
  6. Yes, it's back up. Still, strange about the low availability of certain titles. The Bud Powell Birdland 1953, for example, is no longer available through amazon.com link. In Europe prices are very high for the still available copies. And the Spiritual Unity 50th Anniversary disc is nowhere to be found outside the webstore on espdisk.com ($12.95 shipping to EU).
  7. Oh, that's good news. Some of their titles seem to be low in stock or unavailable through the usual amazon third party sellers at this point in time. I was initially wondering when that corrected pressing of the 50th Anniversary Spiritual Unity will become available (again).
  8. www.espdisk.com is down. Has the label gone under?
  9. Though after EMI's pressing plant in Uden, the Netherlands closed, those RVG discs selling for $5 sometimes had faulty or deviating/improvised artwork, and I also had one CD that looked perfect under lamplight, but had a manufacturing defect. Quality control was let go off, in my experience. They were pressed at several different EU locations. And not all titles first released with copy control tech after sometime in 2002 were reissued without this tech at the end. This was before the Universal takeover. Universal discs from EDC, Germany with the Universal watermark logo in the matrix ring (e.g. ECM, Concord Music Group) are of high quality.
  10. Yes, shipping from the Netherlands to Texas should be free of trouble. Earlier this year, I sold an item to a board member who lives in Texas and the parcel arrived fairly quickly.
  11. I recently noticed the Japanese 90s Mastersound mini-LP containing the original Teo Macero mix also had Strollin' as a bonus track. So the 2014 reissue could be the LP mix with the edits intact after all. I might take a chance on it.
  12. Yes, new mastering and mix (?) by Mark Wilder. 1998 20 bit: Digitally remixed and remastered from the original three-track tapes using an original Presto tube tape recorder by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz. 2009 Legacy: Remixed and mastered by Mark Wilder, Sony Music Studios, New York City. Mixed from the original three-track tapes on an original Presto tube tape recorder. The mastering on the The Complete Columbia & RCA Albums Collection is likely the same as the 2009 Legacy. The 2009 Legacy is missing three alternates from Dynasty that were included on Alternate Takes, which is itself included in The Complete Columbia & RCA Albums Collection. Sound is improved on the 2009 remaster. The Complete Columbia & RCA Albums Collection also contains a new Wilder remaster of Let My Children Hear Music. Mingus And Friends In Concert and Epitaph are by Vic Anesini and Vlado Meller respectively (likely same as the old CDs).
  13. Booker Ervin - The Space Book (OJC) Booker Ervin - Structurally Sound (Connoisseur)
  14. I intend to sell all of my Hoffman Blue Note APO SACDs, but will wait until they are OOP. Let those suckers pay through the nose.
  15. Are we talking new CDs or second hand? Never trust a Dutchman's appraisal of the state his second hand CDs are in. Or expect a bargain. Seriously. I'm Dutch and as a general rule avoid Dutch sellers on eBay and Discogs.
  16. The hi-fi clubs in old folks homes everywhere will surely appreciate Rudy's extreme treble boost on Smoke Stack. I can see it.
  17. It's all just noise anyway. Who needs to own that tripe in beautiful sound?
  18. Over here, it mostly takes 10-14 days.
  19. RIP. What an awful way to go.
  20. Jim, push his chin to access the hidden pause track. That should do the trick.
