What I've heard of these Japanese EMI noughties 24bit remasters there was too much compression applied.

Perhaps not the worst out there, but, I'm sorry to say, mostly among the worst out there. You don't need graphs or waveforms. I've never heard a vintage RVG Blue Note LP, and have my doubts over such samples. But put on any Yoshida mastered XRCD24 from Audio Wave followed by the corresponding RVG CD. That will show you the discrepancy between the beauty of what Rudy originally recorded and what he put out as 24bit remastered CD. But if you compare an XRCD24 disc to it's TOCJ counterpart, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. They are nearly identical. I believe the rolled off tops on the TOCJs (90s BN Works) are clearly audible. That was my conclusion for the TOCJs I own when compared against the SHMs and HD Tracks downloads, both of which I believe do not have boosted highs, but also when compared against some Mosaic sets like the Andrew Hill big box.

That is true, but the problem is that free return addresses often aren't free from abroad (Amazon EU being the exception). Those cost will not be refunded, and shipping abroad from the Netherlands can be quite expensive.
-
So will be the classic that wasn't.
-
The earlier one's are going out of print fast, e.g. Soul Station, True Blue, Cool Struttin'. Won't be cheap for long.

I did recently push Amazon UK into rewarding me a full refund for the 3 Phasis CD-R. All Your Music wanted me to return the beer coaster they had sent me to the Uk for approximately €5.5 at my own cost, but I flat out refused and opened a dispute. My argument was that All Your Music should have clearly stated in their description it was a CD-R they were selling. Amazon itself, of course, does provide this info. Their counterargument was that the disc was shrink-wrapped and the label had neglected to inform them. I made sure to let Amazon know my low opinion of CD-Rs. The customer is king as we say in the Netherlands. Opening a PayPal dispute for sales through eBay will result in PayPal siding with the seller that the item must be returned for any kind of refund. On the other hand if an item is lost in the mail PayPal does provide a full refund without a fuss. Go and draw your own conclusion from that. It does not pay to be honest at eBay/PayPal.

Million dollar painting used as a peg board

And real. Some Spanish old tart took it upon herself to restore this Jebus at her local church and add a little twist to the mix. -

I believe it's up to us to push for a full refund every time we are shipped a CD-R without prior notification. And it's up to labels and retailers to list what is what.

A pair of Dali Ikon 5 MK2 speakers. I've effectively upgraded the sound of all the music in my collection. Not a bad day!

I think though that they're quite straightforward about it (though in my case it was a disc listed as "Audio CD" with no further comment, bought via one of those secondary vendors - but I guess it would have been the same had I ordered from Amazon themselves). Wasn't aware of New World doing the same though - I actually would still love to get the two Cecil Taylor albums, only have copies once provided by a friend. But replacing CDRs with CDRs would be a drag. I've got a copy of 3 Phasis if you're interested you can PM me. I bought both 3 Phasis and Cecil Taylor Unit recently. 3 Phasis was a CD-R, so I'd definitely go second hand there. Discogs worked fine for me. I bought the CD-R (not advertised as such) from All Your Music through Amazon UK. Cecil Taylor Unit was a real CD. I it bought from Cliq Musique! through Amazon FR. It was their last copy and though shrink wrapped could easily have been old new stock.

New World Records is another label that has started using CD-Rs for back catalog titles without notifying their customers.

How to get the entire world to hate you... Poor Cecil.

When I was in Zimbabwe in summer 1997 we visited this wildlife park, I believe it was near Bulawayo, where many rhinos had found sanctuary. Anyone going outside of their vehicle could be shot on sight by the park guards. I'm just saying I'm OK with any extremely harsh sentence being meted out to this lowlife. -
List of second batch: http://ultra-vybe.co.jp/post/CDSOL-6300_2.html The title of this thread should be changed to something like Timeless Jazz Master Collection (Solid, Japan).

I don't like to bitch, but love the Select series, hate the packaging. My Select collection: Carter/ Bradford 36, Andrew Hill 16 & 23, Don Pullen 13, McCoy Tyner 25. -
Thirty new Timeless albums have been re-issued in this series by Solid on June 17. CDSOL-6331 ... CDSOL-6360. George Adams Don Pullen Quartet Life Line (CDSOL-6351) and Decisions (CDSOL-6350) Also: Tom Grant - Mystified CDSOL-6357 with Joe Henderson. Is this any good? and what about Woody Shaw with Tone Jansa Quartet CDSOL-6359

I am not recommending one set over another as far as sound quality is concerned. I am simply stating my suspicion that Savoy has not run out of replacement discs and are still willing to send them when asked politely. Apparently Mr. Washington had a falling out with Savoy, so I would not take his statement about replacement discs no longer being available as a fact when only months before Savoy shipped at least ten of them to listeners worldwide.
-
Savoy was still sending out replacement discs only months before Kenny Washington posted his Amazon review. I doubt Savoy stopped doing so in the four months separating member hbbfam receiving his disc in January and Mr. Washington's April 26, 2015 review. Roughly ten members here received replacement discs between November 2014 and January 2015. "They were offering replacement discs for awhile. The sad part is, Savoy doesn't really exist the way it did back then. They're still copies with the bad disc floating around out here and you can no longer get a replacement disc." It's true there are still new shrink-wrapped sets being sold with the defective disc. These sets should have been recalled and had the defective disc replaced years ago before being put back up for sale. But apparently Savoy have not run out of replacement discs. They are even willing to ship them overseas for free. Bravo.

The recordings I own of Cecil with just a drummer (Max Roach (Soul Note), and Oxley, Lovens, and Moholo all on FMP) are all favourites. I put them on often. I am in need of more recent Cecil, however. After Nailed (1990) I only have Willisau from 2000 on Intakt.

Nice to hear that the Three For Shepp I also bought is better than the domestic version. That one is long OOP and I could not find a copy for a reasonable price. Three For Shepp is a 20bit K2. Some of the Coltrane 20bit K2s also sound a bit better or no worse than the 90s Labson 20bit US/EU digipaks (At The Village Vanguard Again), but not by a huge margin imo. The last of US/EU digipaks from 2000 (Interstellar Space, Kulu Se Mama, New Thing At Newport, Ascension), however, are by Kevin Reeves and were much better than their predecessors. Indeed the Japanese budget 20bit K2 of Kulu Se Mama from four years ago is not as good as the domestic digipak from 2000. Likewise, I expect the New Thing At Newport from this new budget batch to sound worse than the 2000 domestic digipak. Ascension could be a later Japanese remaster, and thus the exception among the remasters that predate the 2011 SHM editions. I have an edition from 2005 which I slightly prefer to the 2000 digipak. I have the 2000 Reeves digipack, and that has a pressing error I guess. it won't rip "Edition I" or play the very end correctly, years ago originally I exchanged the first copy thinking it was defective but, same thing occurred. Really? I used to own a EU pressing of Ascension and later replaced that scratched disc with a US CD, and both played fine until the end. The Originals is also by Reeves and sounds the same except for the extra treble, compression, harshness, and loudness. I prefer to listen to UCCI-9124 from 2005 (Japan). I don't know if this budget release copies that mastering.
