  1. All my spring talks have been postponed until next academic year. 5 more cases in Wake County in the last day or so, and I fully expecting the NC system to go online teaching for the rest of the semester. Rooster_Ties, I share your concern. We've known about this since January and this is where the testing stands: We're about to be massively overburdened, I suspect. Is anyone surprised, given the anti-science yahoos in charge?
  2. Staggering loss. My life changed when I was 17 and heard "Afro-Blue" for the first time. Mr. Tyner, thank you for your humanity and your artistry. RIP.
  3. Very sad news, indeed. Amazing musician. RIP, sir.
  4. Damn. RIP, Ron. A really great guy who will be sorely missed.
  5. Michelle Mercer's book on Wayne Shorter is a good one. Also really enjoyed Cohen's Duke Ellington's America, which is at least in large part biographical.
  6. Wow, RIP. Wings of Desire is my very favorite film of all, so this news hits hard. Thanks for your artistry, sir.
  7. Very saddened by this news. RIP, sir, and thank you.
  8. It was great. He actually gave us the incredible gift of a world premiere solo piece. This is the acoustically uninspiring environment of a conference. But the greatest thing was that the session next door to ours opened our door to complain ("We can hear that") and W didn't even flinch from his playing. AWESOME.
  9. FYI, Wadada just received the American Academy of Religion's award for religion and the arts this past weekend. Was a real privilege for those of us involved in getting him the award. He's really stoked about this recording and there is a ton of amazing stuff he's got on deck, including a 3cd solo release recorded in a 16th century Finnish church.
  10. Super cool, Mark! I'll look forward to reading it too. Been digging this Mingus set a lot. Pullen, holy smokes.
  11. What a legacy he leaves, on so many levels. RIP, Mr. Weston and thank you for your artistry.
  12. The greatest. Always. Deepest thanks to The Queen. RIP.
  13. I'm reviewing it for Dusted, so I got a promo from the label. 2.5 hours of glory.
  14. It's insanely good. Steve's been on a roll lately, but this one is crackling.
