  1. Thanks for the link, Joe. I hadn't heard of those Palmetto releases. Both the Ben Allison and Matt Wilson albums look quite intriguing. That Ron Horton is on the former makes me want to check it out. I really dug his playing on Andrew Hill's DUSK.
  2. Two K2 OJCs: John Coltrane: COLTRANE Miles Davis: COLLECTORS' ITEMS (I've always been curious about this one) Duke Ellington: ELLINGTON UPTOWN King Oliver: OH PLAY THAT THING (Original 1923 recordings w/ Louis Armstrong) Sidney Bechet et Claude Luter: Jazz in Paris series and my first Bechet stuff Fred Anderson: ON THE RUN-LIVE AT THE VELVET LOUNGE (w/Tatsu Aoki and Hamid Drake) Time to listen.

    Clifford Brown

If you're a fan of Sonny Rollins, check out disc 10. Otherwise, do as Mike suggests. It is a daunting amount of material, but it's also an embarassment of riches.
  4. Finally was able to crack open the Mobley set this morning. Mmmm six discs of Hank. SWEET!
  5. Just trying to engage you guys in a "spirited" discussion.
  6. Art Farmer. He's a mofo, but I didn't realize it a few years back. Not as "dazzling" as Clifford or Lee, but a very lyrical, pensive musician.
  7. Why don't we celebrate Woody instead of bash Wynton. Wynton bashing seems to be the hip thing to do on these boards. He's probably the top all-around trumpeter on the planet and he's successful. I'm not really a fan of his stuff, but I still respect the dude.
  8. Merry X-MAS everyone. Best of the holiday season.
  9. I think you just made that broad-based assumption and attached a negative stigma to them in a general sense. That's bullshit and you seem to think you can just make flippant remarks like that all the time. Just because you end off with "Period.", doesn't mean that your statement is authoritative. Far from it, I would think.
  10. Thanks for the review, Jim. I know this will be under the tree for me. I'm in it for keeps also.

    Jack Teagarden

I love big-T. "Stars fell on Alabama" is great everytime he does it. The Mosaic collection (the Roulette one) is beautiful. I will raise a glass in honour of Tea tonight!
  12. RT - It has to do with when the disc was issued (dates, etc.). It's not really that "strict", but there are limitations. You should really subscribe again, it's a great little magazine. Far better than Downbeat or Jazztimes.
  13. Bought a bottle of English Harbour rum (from Antigua). It's very smooth, aged five years. Worth the extra dough, IMO.
  14. That's great, Chuck. Thanks for putting stuff like that out. SNURDY... really opened my ears and so did ALL MUSIC. I need to get the Von Freeman discs. That'll be my after-XMAS gift to myself. Be prepared for another dreaded Canadian order...
  15. Thanks, I'll try to order it ASAP. Carpe diem, as Jim says.
  16. Here's some more detailed info on Steve: Steve Kirby page
  17. Grabbed this at a used store today. Unfortunately the dude at the store forgot to put the disc in and I noticed only when I got home. At least I can read the liner notes. Oh well, I'll get to hear it tommorow.
  18. Where can I get a copy? Looks like a smokin' lineup.
  19. I was going to ask about those Lucky Thompson albums. You just answered my question...
  20. Got it today. My friend, Steve, said this is THE Cecil Taylor album to have. Can't wait to hear it; will post my impressions when I have something to say about it. B-)
  21. I've recently been hanging out and swapping records with Steve Kirby, a bass player extroadinaire. This guy played with Elvin Jones for two years. Need I say any more? He also is the head of jazz studies at the University of Manitoba. He is a very cool cat and will enhance this bulletin board greatly. He's very busy, but he said he's going to check this place out. I got him a username and set him up this afternoon. Hopefully he'll make some posts soon.
  22. Some of my friends are currently student teaching. Some dig it, some don't. One friend who's going to school in the States, liked teaching junior high bands better than elementary level music. Another friend is going to be a gym teacher. I actually may end up teaching (a certain topic I know far too much about) at a local university, if everything plays out like I hope it does...
  23. Yeah, some of the terminology was somewhat difficult for me to understand, but overall it sent me looking for the recordings and re-listening to ones I already had. It gave me a better understanding of the techniques and nuances that Pres developed/used in his solos and that just made me dig Pres a hell of a lot more than I already did (which was a lot!). Not a big book, but lots of good stuff in there.
  24. So, Ed, what's the word on the Dinah Mosaic? Inquiring minds need to know.
