    John Young

Up. Perhaps not many people know of John Young? Chuck - Is Young on those Von Freeman albums that you produced? Jim - Can you give me some recommendations? Anyone else with comments, etc. on John Young please chime in (Larry Kart, maybe?).
  4. Anyone else care to comment on the musical content of this set? Out of the 90 or so responses to this thread, about 5% have to do with the actual music. Who really cares what number set you got? Most people, I'd like to think, buy the sets for the music itself. Not having heard any of this material, myself, I'd like to hear some further opinions regarding the tunes, arrangements, solos, etc. Thanks in advance.
  5. I saw this DVD at a local HMV yesterday. Hoping to pick it up sometime this week; sounds like it's a keeper.
  6. Man, all of these upcoming sets (Selects and regular) look great. Seems like everything Mosaic releases these days is something that I add to the ever-growing "list". I think I need to start buying lottery tickets.
  7. Add another book to the want-list. Welcome, Allen.

    Gene Ammons

Not a "jam", so to speak, but I dig the shit out of this one:
  9. I don't think I would mess around with P.C. I wonder what Jackie was complaining about. Maybe the dope was messing with his brain.

  11. Hey, Larry, would you mind signing my copy after I get it for X-Mas? That would be super. B-)
  12. It's a goodie, for sure. Sonny Clark really sparkles on that one.
  13. Today, I traded in a bunch of cds and got three Lps. I find the trading route is great: you save shelf space and get "new" albums that you've never heard before. It's also more fun than buying new stuff (ie. sealed). That said, I also purchased a re-issue of CENTRAL PARK NORTH, which actually was a new copy.

    Art Farmer

I just put a number of holds on Art Farmer albums at the public library. SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR is actually at my local branch; I think I'll pick it up tonight.

    Anthony Braxton

I picked up SEVEN STANDARDS, 1985, VOLUME 1 today. AMG gives it a no-so-good review, but I really don't care. Should be interesting to hear how Hank Jones and the fairly "straight-ahead" rhythm section interacts with Braxton.

    John Young

Am currently listening to the Sonny Stitt/Zoot Sims Cadet Lp, INTER-ACTION, and John Young is the pianist. As soon as I heard his first solo, I knew I'd heard him before (it was on a Von Freeman live album). A very recognizable style, good accompanist, great soloist; he seems to use the whole keyboard. Anyways, there's not much about him on this BB, so I thought a thread would be nice. BTW, here's AMG's page for Young: John Young

    Art Farmer

Art Farmer is a heavy cat. I'll admit to not really getting him at first. But once I "got it", I noticed that he has a lyrical quality to his lines that is actually quite deep. STYLINGS OF SILVER features him with Mobley; really looking forward to hearing Art and Hank on the Mobley Mosaic (is it Christmas yet?). Another good sideman appearance is on the BN album with Curtis Fuller (can't remember the title at the moment, it's on the Fuller Mosaic though). I'm slightly embarassed to say that I have zero Farmer-led sessions, but hope to rectify that problem in the near future. He was one hell of a trumpet player, though. Also invented the Flumpet.
  19. I'd say it is substantially better, especially the first two tunes (as another poster pointed out). The remaining four songs are not bad either. I've only listened to this one a couple of times, but it's one I'm going to return to often in the near future I think.
  20. Have a great B-Day, David. Many happy returns.
  21. It wasn't noticeable when this thread was first started, but now it is visible. Joyeux Nöel.
  22. I'll take that into consideration.
  23. Sorry, I'm of not help with regard to your initial request, but I am interested in your experience with your iPod thus far. As mentioned in another thread, I recently purchased an iBook and have been most satisfied with it. I am looking to get an iPod also, probably sometime in the new year. Are they quite easy to use? Do you have one of those cables that connects into your stereo? Have you had any problems with it?
