Andrew Hill "point of departure" (blue note, japan toshiba emi) Andrew Hill "judgement" (blue note, liberty) Andrew Hill "smokestack" (blue note, NY USA stereo)...not surprised that this one is the best sounding of the bunch...sonically speaking of course. -

Well I think I know what record I'll play tonight if I get some time. Maybe "judgement" and "Andrew!!!" too if time allows.... I think Dolphy dominates this session too FWIW -

Well Kevin I will most likely cave in and buy that Mobley MM lp along with the Burell. Darn it...and here back in January I figured I would only buy maybe 3 or 4 of the 12 titles haha. Currently spinning: Masahiko Togashi/Mototeru Takagi "isolation" (Columbia, Japan) -

Kevin how is this? Does it sound really nice? I have the "blue train" and "idle moments" music matters 33rpm reissues and love those but my XRCD of "soul station" sounds so good I'm a bit on the fence as to whether I should get this vinyl? -

To very roughly paraphrase JFK's witticism on Thomas Jefferson, one might say that a Bennink solo album is like another musician's big band. Fairly little drumming on this one - it's full of Chinese violin madness, throat singing, broken trumpet wrangling and what sounds like a very mangled tenor saxophone at one point. It's pretty wasted. I agree. I used to own this and found it to be easily his strangest album. -

If memory serves that's a painting by an american named Kenneth Noland. It took me a few years to warm to Lacy myself but now I have almost everything he's done! Try "the window" or "morning joy" too as starting points. -
"Funhouse" is one of my all time favorite rock records....it blew me away when I heard it as a 16 year old and nearly 25 years later it still kicks my butt when I play it...so much energy and power wrapped up into that record!

Agreed; great album. Used to have a very noisy copy on Birth until I found a clean Flying Dutchman pressing. His Wergo album around the same time or a year before is even better! Right now: Richard Beirach "eon" (ECM, Germany) -
Well Mats is right. Just heard back from Evan Parker himself who told me the first pressing was a dark blue label(1000 copies). The second pressing (500 copies) was on a turquoise label. Then there was a Japanese pressing(he figures around 1000) and finally the late 70s Nimbus pressing of 1000 copies. Then of course the PSI CD that was published in two editions. I find this all very interesting to know; does this make me a hopeless nerd? My wife would probably say yes...

The wife was out at a choral concert tonight(an acapella group from Finland called "Rajaton" - and she thinks my music is weird!) so after I put our toddler to bed I was able to spin a few more records: Taj Mahal Travellers "July 15, 1972" (Sony, Japan) MEV "united patchwork" (Horo, Italy) currently Edward Vesala "Satu" (ECM, Germany) -

Ive tried enjoying this a few times with no success. And Ornette was one of my first early loves...I played his Atlantic and Contemporary stuff to death back when I got into jazz over 20 years ago. Right now on a rainy afternoon: Mal Waldron "The Call" (Globe, Japan)...I have the JAPO issue as well but found this nice Japanese issue for cheap some years ago so why not have 2 different issues of such a great session? Gotta love those vintage keyboard sounds and always a pleasure to hear Fred Braceful's unique drumming. -
Thanks guys...just got an email from Mats Gustafsson(who must have probably the most insane free jazz collection) and he thinks the dark blue label is first, but will confirm when he gets back home. It just strikes me as interesting because I can't think of any other Incus album with *3* different label designs!?

Sonny Clark "Leapin and Lopin" (Blue Note, NY USA stereo) My favorite Sonny Clark album... Damn you! finally decided it was time to jump for a copy. Fabulous record Ugh I used to own a mint copy of that...found it for $4 back in the mid-90s! Around that time I didn't have that much money to spend on records so could not resist flipping it for a few hundred back then to spend on other records -

Circle "the Paris concert" (ECM, Germany). Sad to say this is the first time in the 20 years I've owned this that I've played it from start to finish! Incredible music! If the night was younger I'd pull out "gathering" and "in concert" too -

The fate of most Arista/Freedom LPs it seems. Alas, I think you are right. I was just looking at a list of Arista Freedom LPs, and -- should I admit this?-- I think I have all of them except "New York Mary" (which I have passed on a dozen times). I suspect that if some of these titles were issued on Incus, or FMP, or some other difficult label to find, people would happily be paying big money for them. Maybe we should have an Arista Freedom "what are you listening to?" festival. I have almost all of them. They damn near flooded the cutout bins at one time. Wondering how many newer listeners who find copies today are finding them with cutout scars. I have most of them too except for New York Mary and a select few others...I know I passed on the Paul Bley 2LP many, many times simply because I thought the cover art was atrocious! Probably some good music on that, but I already have at least 40 Paul Bley lps/cds so more then enough to listen to already... -
Thanks anyways David...hope somebody on this board knows this very trivial bit of info

Maybe some UK readers of the board can help me. I'm interested to know about the pressing variations on the Incus label...more particularly the actual labels of the records. I know that later 70s issues have white labels with black text, but I have seen two different labels of Incus 1 "topography of the lungs". One is a turquoise label and the other is a dark blue label(similiar to the label on Wheeler's "song for someone" but not black). Does anyone know which is the first issue? The Turquoise or the dark blue label?

Masahiko Togashi & Masayuki Takayanagi "pulsation" (paddlewheel, Japan) I have not played this in over 10 years...a great 1983 duo concert from these veterans of the Japanese free jazz scene. -

I feel in rare company for liking this LP. Count me in as a fan too..I like this album. Although I don't have much else Gato in my collection besides an album for the Italian VISTA label and his sidemen appearances with Don Cherry. And Clifford I pulled out my "Machine Gun" and it matches your stampers as well....weird. I know someone either told me or I read about the supposed fact that later FMP pressings did not have BRO stampers but now I know that is incorrect. Sorry for the delay but I've been knocked out the last day or so with a violent case of food poisoning; not fun! -

Hmm..I recall reading somewhere that later issues had an FMP matrix. Or maybe the seller who sold me my copy years ago told me I'll pull my copy out again tomorrow and see if it matches yours exactly... The FMP label is a bit of a mystery to me as far as pressings go...my "balls" album had the "200 copies" note on the back but I'm not sure if that is true? Also I've owned 3 different versions of Peter Kowald's quintet album on the label. One had a red border on the cover which I presumed was the latest issue, the other had a black on white cover with a little handmade touch(a sticker on one of the art squares), and the last copy(which is the one I kept) is also a black on white cover with a sticker as well on that same art square, however, this copy is definitely screen printed where as the other black on white was a regular mass produced type cover... -

Never seen the FMP with BRO stamps. Please to scan? Sorry; the label looks like your standard early 70s FMP black text on white but what I meant was the runout groove has the "BRO" label etched in.
