Haha..while not on that scale I have a friend who collects guitars too...he probably has around 25-30 right now. It's a bit crazy but as a record collector I can't really judge sanity I've played guitar for nearly 30 years and right now just have two main guitars...a Taylor 810 acoustic and a Hagstrom Super Swede reissue. I also have a cheap bass, 12 string acoustic, classical, a late 80s heavy metal looking Ibanez, and a super cheap made-in-Asia Fender squier stratocaster which I just bought for Terje Rypdal to autograph! If I had more money I'd love to own a real Fender strat and a nice Gibson ES-335 or Les Paul...one day..that Bolt guitar looks pretty interesting jazzbo...

Well for roughly $30 shipped I can't really say no to this...it's a good deal. Will I find the time to actually play all 4 cds in their entirety? Probably not As my wife reminds me..."I'm such a completist" - though not entirely true as I don't own a single post-retirement Miles album.

Just had an old friend over and we played one side each off the following lps: Cannonball Adderley "something else" orig 47 w 63rd Blue Note Steve Lacy "Disposability" (VIK, Italy..orig - used to have the reissue for years which sounds like crap next to the original) Don Rendell "Spacewalk" (EMI, UK) -

Yet another miles Davis box set...I think the "D" section of my CD shelving might collapse soon thanks to all these boxes!

Best jazz performance you never saw ...

I also remember missing a Steve Lacy/Irene Aebi show at the western front around the same time...if I recall correctly it was on New Year's Eve and I had other plans. Thankfully I saw Lacy live on two other occasions later! -

Missed an AMM concert in Vancouver around 1994. Had tickets for a New Zealand based indie rock band called "bailter space" that same night whom I had scheduled to do an interview with for a little fanzine I was doing. In hindsight I should have seen AMM as since I've only seen Eddie prevost perform a few times and never Keith Rowe or John Tilbury. Then again, the aforementioned New Zealand band never played vancouver again either! -

Yes I was referring to the Japanese lp, but I've also heard some live recordings circulating around featuring Cherry with Dyani and Brand from the early 70s that are really nice...

Yup got that ECM disc and it is nice...it helps that I like many of the other players on that disc too! I guess I can't forget about Codona too now that I'm thinking about Don Cherry and all 3 of their albums are great as well. Plus I like the recordings he did in the early 70s with Dollar Brand, Johnny Dyani, etc.

"Complete communion" is one of my top 10 blue notes of all time but his later stuff is more a mixed bag to my ears. I have most of it, but nothing quite fires like that particular blue note session. I have the "organic music" 2lp and I'm guessing this CD on caprice mines similiar territory....so it's probably good but likely not something id play very often.

My sister used to host a radio show at a college radio station that had a few really early and incredibly rare self-released Loren Mazzacane Connors lps...the night I saw them I *briefly* entertained the notion of taking them before common sense kicked in and I left them Record collecting does seem like an addiction at times....

I got a small batch of 3 of these blue note CDs along with a SHM Eric dolphy "outward bound" and all 4 sound incredible....I agree that outside of xrcd and other special audiophile issues these are the best digital sounding issues I've heard.

Stop following an artist: how/why/when?

Agreed - and certainly both Peter BrotZmann and Anthony Braxton would fall into this category for me personally -

For me it's Tomasz Stanko; I love his music and have nearly all his records and CDs dating back to the stuff with Komeda but his last few CDs on ECM have just not moved me. I made an effort to resist buying his latest "new York days" 2cd when it came out but succumbed last month when I couldn't resist a good price on amazon - I wish I didn't buy it! To my ears it's not much different then the last few polish 4tet CDs and the spark just isn't there for me anymore. I'll just happily play some of my older well worn faves like the albums with Edward Vesala and Tony Oxley. -
Miles Davis "kind of blue" Jackie McLean "destination out" Ralph Towner "solstice" Terje Rypdal "descendre" I think I've played these records the most out of all the ones in my collection so they feel like old comfy slippers whenever I hear them!

I love vinyl but I do not worship it...when I started buying records back in the mid to late 80s I bought records simply because at that time you could get 2 or 3 lps for the price of a CD. Also, most of the music I liked as a kid was independent alternative/punk type music which often only was released on vinyl back then. As I got into jazz in the early 90s I found it was much easier/quicker/cheaper to buy used jazz lps rather then brand new jazz CDs(with the exception of new jazz CD releases which I would buy as well) to fill in gaps in the collection. Even back then though I hated noisy records and would rather have a quiet CD over a scratched record. A clean NM album on a good turntable beats a CD hands down for me, but if I hear a lot of snap/crackle/pop on the vinyl then give me a CD anytime! If this guy who wrote this blog claims to love crackly vinyl then I am surprised...if anything noisy vinyl completely destroys the enjoyment of the music for me! It's incredibly annoying...

Steve Lacy "the wire" (denon, Japan) listening to this while thinking about a friend who is going through a difficult time...and I'm also reminded of what great losses in the passings of Mr.Lacy and Masahiko Togashi. -

Teruo Nakamura "Rising Sun" (Kitty, Japan)..not nearly as good as the earlier "Unicorn" on TBM, but some really nice tracks still on here featuring Harry Whitaker on a few of these. Terumasa Hino "Fuji" (Victor, Japan)...this one is yet another strong Hino record...the opening track has some amazing guitar playing too Me too. Great album. I must get this one day. My Tapscott collection is very incomplete...I only own "The Giant Is Awakened" on Flying Dutchman and that is a killer album. I think I've been outbid on "Dial B for Barbara" about 10 times over the years -

I just ordered the "archives" CD...can't wait to hear it. On a side note I've always really liked his "new call from France" lp on Saba as well...so many great albums out there featuring Jef Gilson...

Some of the Jef Gilson archives have been released recently by Jazzman records: http://www.jazzmanrecords.co.uk/jef-gilson-archives-cd but I too would love to see those marvellous Palm albums given a re-issue program. Wow thanks for posting that link! I was completely unaware of this CD...looks very interesting and that little video on the website made me drool a bit to see all those reels of tape! I have pretty much all the Palm albums but would certainly welcome CD reissues if they came with extra tracks and such...the few Malagasy albums in particular have long been favorites of mine.
