  1. For my taste, this CD is one of the best in 2006. This Album is REALLY good. great arrangements, great solos by everyone, especially Mike Brecker that burns on the 2 tracks he's on. I HIGHLY recommend this CD!
  2. Just donated. Love these chats!
  3. Some Johnny Hodges Blues always does it for me, so I'll say one of the two Hodges sets. The Master Jazz Piano set is also a good candidate.
  4. I'm really enjoying this CD, especially Pharoah. BTW, anyone knows why Pharoah is not recording or performing so much as a leader in the last few years?
  5. Have a great holiday, my fellow music lovers across the Atlantic.
  6. Here's a compatible quote by Carney: I actually tried to get a sound as big as Adrian Rollini, who was playing bass sax at that time . . . so I suppose whatever sound I get goes back to that.
  7. It's already Nov. 8 here, so... Happy Birthday, Paul!
  8. It's Nov.1 here, and it's time to celebrate LD's 80th Birthday!
  9. Not late at all - today is BROWNIE's birthday!
  10. Many happy returns, Chris
  11. Many Happy Returns!!
  12. Many happy returns, Daniel!
  13. Happy birthday, my friend! The Bible tells us that Abraham, the father of the Jewish and the Muslim people and the western culture, was 75 when he left his homeland and traveled to Israel, to create the nation. So you see, 75 is just a starting point of greater things that await you!
  14. You can now download the entire album through The Blog "ORGY IN RHYTHM".
  15. I've been spinning "Critical Mass" lately and I really dig this side. It may not be the best of Holland's 5tet but it's very solid and very enjoyable. What strikes me the most is "the togetherness" of the 5tet. They really understand each other almost telepathically. The songs are nice and some of them are quite catchy. Holland is not the all-powerful leader some leaders of his stature tend to become. There is no one player who outshines the others in this album, and no one player is given an extra play-time over his compadres. Every member of the 5tet gets a chance to show his writing skills as well as his playing skills. The diversity of the writers on this album also indicate the diversity of the music. I really like Chris Potter's playing in this album, especially his Soprano sax. Steve Nelson is always a pleasure to listen to, whether on vibes or on marimba and Robin Eubanks turns out some really meaty solos. All in all - a really good one!
  16. many many wonderful recordings. Here are several that I like a lot: F.Hubbard - Red Clay C.Tolliver - Strata East Recordings (yeah, I cheated...) G.Mulligan - The Age of steam Brotherhood of Breath - Traveling Somewhere D.Holland - Conference Of The Birds C.Jordan - Glass Bead Games K.Burrell - ellington is forever vol.1 V.Dickenson - gentlemen of the trombone W.Shaw - Stepping Stones N.Brignola & P.Adams - Baritone Madness
  17. I wish you all Shana Tova Umetukah - a good and sweet (Jewish) new year. Our e-card says in Hebrew May the curses of the passing year end and the blessings of the new year begin.
  18. "Angels of Atlanta" is a good one
  19. FWIW, I think Ponder's playing on the extra "Grass Roots" session, and "That Certain Feeling" (which I only heard for the first time less than a year ago), are tops among my all-time favorite 60's recordings with guitar. Yes!!!! What a shame he didn't get the amount of session time his playing so obviously deserved during these years. I remember reading an older thread that mentioned the missed opportunity of Ponder not recording with Larry Young, and can only reiterate those sentiments. I too only got to hear 'That Certain Feeling' for the first time this year and still can't believe these tunes were written during the session. I think it makes a great companion piece to the extra Grass Roots session as well. Thanks for the thoughts everyone regarding Common Touch. It's going for a song and found where I least expected it. In fact they've got two copies. I think I missed something earlier in this thread. What is this "Grass roots" album that Jimmy Ponder played on? He wasn't on the Grassella Oliphant album of that name. MG MG, Andrew Hill's Disc "Grass Roots" has an extra, unissued session, which imho is far better than the original Grass Roots. Ponder is playing there, alongside Woody Shaw, Frank Mitchell, Reggie Workman, Idris Muhammad and of course, Andrew Hill. A very good session!
  20. Many Happy returns!
  21. I second that recommendation. This is indeed an obscure gem.
