off topic - What do you guy's reaction to Cat Stevens' music, now that he's called Yusuf Islam and he contributes some of the royalties to Hamas, Jihad, Iran etc.? For me THAT's where I draw the line. I stopped listen to his music altogether, and I grew up on his music.

Mark, Chris: My ford comment was in reply to the Mercedes/BMW comment. What I refered to is the well-established fact, yet very well hidden in the US that many AMERICAN corporation, inc. FORD had factories and subsidiaries within occupied Europe and THEY employed forced labor EXACTLY as those infamous German plants and factories. Everything you know about the mishaps to the forced labor in the German factories is exactly the same in those Americn factories - starvation, torture and thousands of deaths. But hey, Ford had the right connection after the American won the war... The Mule: Your points are valid. In fact, as I mentioned my grandfather, whom I owe almost everything that I've beome, shared your point of views. Emotionally I feel the same. But I think that a total seperation between Art and an Artist should be made for the future of Art as a seperate as possible from the Artist's points of view. That's why I think that the Qs - whether or not she knew about the Holocaust is irrelevant. Suppose she knew EXACTLY what was going on and she supported it wholeheartedly, and suppose that it will be proven beyong doubt that her work inspired the continuation of the killing of the Jews and others. I mean - let's suppose she indeed was the essense of evil. I still, as much as it will hurt me, would think that her art should be seperated of the artist.

Right on, GoM! Criss is wonderful, simply wonderful. BTW, even non-Jazz fans enjoys his CDs when I play them. BTW, didn't the Freshsounds are with Hawes as well (or is it on one of the other Spanish labels?). Criss had partisipated in many Jam sessions in the late 40s-early 50s. I particulary enjoy the Jams with Wardell Gray. (and w/Hawes as well, sometimes. I think) And what about his great 2 last albums on Muse - out of nowhere and Crisscraft? Did you gave them a spin? You'll enjoy these 2 sessions a lot.

I've seen Olympia and it's an amazing film indeed. If I'm not mistaken - that was the first time slo-mo was being used on screen. Re Mora vs Art: I'm reminded of the controversy arises everytime Wagner or R.Strauss is being played in Israel. Untill recent years no one in Israel played their compositions, and when one symphony or another tried to - there was a lot of controversy, even physical clashes in front of the symphony hall. No public media radio or TV is playing them even today. Should we wait till the last of the survivors die until we'll allow Wagner's music to be played in Israel? Can we detatch Wagner and Strauss' Artistry from their beliefs and from their support and encouragement of the Holocaust (In Stauss' case?) Riefenstahl's films were made as a propaganda tool. Very artful propagand but propaganda nonetheless. However, they had and still have alot of artistic merit. Should we disregard the filmaker's intentions while making them? Can we? I personally believe we should. Once an artist finishes a piece, it becomes the property of all of us in a sense. We can all interpret enjoy the art as we please, eventhough the artist didn't mean it this way. Cencoring Art because of the Artists' beliefs and even deeds deprives us of that treasure and makes even Art - PC. However, I know that my grandparents, who were in Bergen-Belzen concentration camp think differently...

Visual Illusions
White Lightning replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The rings appear to be red when observers approach the figure while fixating at the center, whereas they appear to be blue when observers move away from the figure while fixating at the center. For both cases, the rings appear to rotate in the different directions. -

The gray line appears to tilt down to the left, though it is horizontal. -

Releases you really like, but with players on them

I don't really care for John Scofield's playing, but I really like Joe Henderson's "So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles)" including Sco's contributions. -

Richie Kamuca was born 73 years ago today. I think that this is a good occasion as any to celebrate the music of this excellent Tenor (and Alto) player. You don't hear Kamuca's name mationed quite often. He's overshadowed by Zoot and Getz - his style "brothers". I myself really began to really dig him only a few years ago. His name is popping up in so many of the Albums that I liked: Shally Mann's Blackhawk sessions, Terry Gibbs' Dreamband recordings, Woody Herman's 3rd herd, Frank Rosolino, Chet & Art Pepper, Bill Hollman's really big Band etc. The man swung so hard with such a beautiful sound! His Concord LPs are great. His interaction with guitar playes Mundell Lowe and Herb Ellis is magical It's a crime that these sessions are not available on digital form (or are they? Some obscure Japanese pressing maybe?) Anyone else shares a for Kamuca's music?

Obscure, In Print Gems In Your Collection
White Lightning replied to paul secor's topic in Recommendations
Some of you probably have this, but still it's a relatively obscure gem: Dusko Goykovich - Swinging Macedonia (Enja) w/ Nathan Davis, Mal Wadron et al. My Japanese mini LP has a different cover art than the one on the AMG. -

What a beautiful album. I've played this album over and over, and it's a ahuntingly beautiful album. Jim is right, it's not about the solos, it's about the way Mariano states the melodies in a most personal way. He takes the standards and completely makes them his own. As of today Mariano is cordially added to the few who make the yardstick of presenting the standards on this CDs To the ultimate Quebec-Clark & Chet versions of "Deep in a Dream" I've added Mariano. To the Ultimate Chet version if "I'm a fool to want you" I've added Mariano.

The World's Greatest Food!
White Lightning replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm sure you're right, but that's exactly why I wonder why Bagels are not part of the Israeli cuisine. About half of the Jewish-Israeli population is Ashkenazi (originated from East/Central Europe). -

The World's Greatest Food!
White Lightning replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Just curious: Why Bagel & Cream cheese are considered "Jewish cuisine"? We don't eat it in Israel. Nor Lox. Now, Hummus - that's another thing. And if you haven't tried A Jerusalemite Hummus you haven't eaten the world's greatest food yet -
GoM, All the performances are AFRS "Jubilee" recordings. I don't believe that there is an overlap with the Capitol sides.
