PRIVATE MESSAGES WORK!!!!!!!!!!
White Lightning replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
Couldn't access the board again this morning until now... plus: In the last 1-2 days, I don't get e-mail notification when someone PMs me. -
Many happy returns, my friend!

I've known about the existence of this date for some time, but I have never heard it myself. It almost goes without saying that... I would LOVE to hear the "lost quintet" with Chick on ACOUSTIC piano!!! RT, I have these 12 CDs (plus another one that was not included in the "tree"). If you're interested I can burn you some copies. PM me.
-
this line-up: this being the last show they performed before Shorter left the group. Omit Airto to make it a quintet. The lost quintet was a great-great quintet that Miles took on the road after Bitches Brew sessions. It had Wayne Shorter (ts,ss), Chick Corea (Keyboards), Dave Holland(B), Jack DeJohnette (d). The lost quintet giged in 1969 and early 70. Unfortunately it was never recorded in the studios this "the lost quintet". Fortunately, many bootlegs from the combo are available.

History corner

That's as good a guideline as can be formulated, I think. I humbly disagree. Identifying as "loot" only things acquired after 1970, basically favors the "old world countries" - those who were strong enough to loot prior to 1970 . This only launders the illegal acquisitions of such powers as the US, Britain, France, Russia etc. Legitimizing the pillage they've done in the past. Another fine example of discriminating "the south" over "the north". I think the criteria whether or not to return a looted object should be substantial with factors such as the importance of the relics to the looted nation, the ability of such countries to maintain and preserve such a relic should it be returned, etc. -
My Favorite is "The Great Fontana". Only second to that are the 2 sessions with another Bone-great Jiggs Whigham. Cameo appearences that I like are on "Bill Perkins on Stage", and on several of the Woody Herman bands. Hey didn't Randy's father, Arno Marsh, played a lot with mr. Fontana in Las Vegas? Why don't we ask him for some first hand memories!!! I bet he has some great memories to share!
-
Sad news, eventhough it didn't come as a surprise. Mr. Fontana was a great great bone player. Too bad he didn't recorde a lot of Jazz. He a musician's musician. Every bone player admired him. Too bad he wasn't well known to the jazz fans. Long live the music.

Well, I can't think of a recording with the two of them. If so, how could that be? Both boppers, in the same period of time, Miles was with Bird in LA. Maybe they at least jammed together?

Blanton would have been 85 today. I bet he's playing Pitter Panther Patter with Duke up there right now.

Lon, thanks for the info. I'm ashamed to admit that eventhough I've probably heard Shad's work w/Basie and w/Pres, I've never *really* listened to him. He definitely deserves that. Maybe this negligence of mine is due to the giants he played with.

I'm a HUGE fan of Vic Dickenson. Sorry I missed the week by a few days - I moved back to Israel and it took me a few days to unpack all my CDs. "The essential" is indeed essential. The only other Vic recording on par is "Gentleman of the Trombone", imho. I can't find a flow in any track. They all run smoothly. the frontline is exceptional: Besides Vic's bone playing, Ed hall is playing in his usual excellence. Braff is great and so is Shad Collins (Who is he?) The Rhythm session is very Basie-ite. Sir Charles Thompson is playing A-la Basie and together with (a bit tame) papa Jo Jones and Walter Page and Steve Jordan to create that Basie-ite easy going and relaxation that this session projects. BTW, Harlod_Z the Dickenson CD you mentioned is called "Trombone Cholly". Joe Newman and Frank Wess complete the frontline. A nice one, though a little lesser effort than "The Essential" and "Gentleman of the Trombone"

Sad news. I was fortunate to see him twice, the last time was a few months ago in DC with Billy Bang. His music lives! Frank lives!

Congrats, mr. and mrs. B3-er -
Mule, If seperating art and artist sounds reasonable enough to you, then the question is where do you draw the line where that seperation is not in order. How About R.Strauss who was a member of the Nazi party? Or Wagner, who supported and believed in Aryan supremecy, his music was composed as such and was an idol to Hitler? For me, this is a slippery slide. I don't wish Radio stations to stop playing a certain artist just because he expressed some anti-American opinions, for example. So where do you draw the line? I don't know how to draw that line, since I'm aware that my sensitivities are different than others. I know that my line (see above post) is just that - MY line. Othersdraw it elsewhere. But I'm thinking about a public policy, not an individual one. Say in NPR etc. Because I try to find an objective definition of when this line is drawn, and the only definition that I can come up with that will maintain the art of people who oppose/support Bush, or Sharon, or Arafat or whatever is: Complete seperation of Art and artist unless the artist uses the money/publicity to directly and openly support actual human right violation. Needless to say, anyone, however, is free to boycott whatever artist he wishes to because of the artist's views/beliefs etc.
