  1. 24 minutes flu? A strange multi-sensory dream?
  2. Richie Kamuca was born 73 years ago today. I think that this is a good occasion as any to celebrate the music of this excellent Tenor (and Alto) player. You don't hear Kamuca's name mationed quite often. He's overshadowed by Zoot and Getz - his style "brothers". I myself really began to really dig him only a few years ago. His name is popping up in so many of the Albums that I liked: Shally Mann's Blackhawk sessions, Terry Gibbs' Dreamband recordings, Woody Herman's 3rd herd, Frank Rosolino, Chet & Art Pepper, Bill Hollman's really big Band etc. The man swung so hard with such a beautiful sound! His Concord LPs are great. His interaction with guitar playes Mundell Lowe and Herb Ellis is magical It's a crime that these sessions are not available on digital form (or are they? Some obscure Japanese pressing maybe?) Anyone else shares a for Kamuca's music?
  3. Some of you probably have this, but still it's a relatively obscure gem: Dusko Goykovich - Swinging Macedonia (Enja) w/ Nathan Davis, Mal Wadron et al. My Japanese mini LP has a different cover art than the one on the AMG.
  4. What a beautiful album. I've played this album over and over, and it's a ahuntingly beautiful album. Jim is right, it's not about the solos, it's about the way Mariano states the melodies in a most personal way. He takes the standards and completely makes them his own. As of today Mariano is cordially added to the few who make the yardstick of presenting the standards on this CDs To the ultimate Quebec-Clark & Chet versions of "Deep in a Dream" I've added Mariano. To the Ultimate Chet version if "I'm a fool to want you" I've added Mariano.
  5. I'm sure you're right, but that's exactly why I wonder why Bagels are not part of the Israeli cuisine. About half of the Jewish-Israeli population is Ashkenazi (originated from East/Central Europe).
  6. Been there, done that. You're abosolutely right. It was Very very tasty!
  7. Just curious: Why Bagel & Cream cheese are considered "Jewish cuisine"? We don't eat it in Israel. Nor Lox. Now, Hummus - that's another thing. And if you haven't tried A Jerusalemite Hummus you haven't eaten the world's greatest food yet
  8. GoM, All the performances are AFRS "Jubilee" recordings. I don't believe that there is an overlap with the Capitol sides.
  9. 2 Heps I keep returning to are from the Metronome series: "They All Had Rhythm-45-46" - w/Benny Carter, Jimmy Mundy & Gerald Wilson Bands and "Groovin' High in L.A. 46" - w/ Benny Carter. Wilbert Baranco, Gerald Wilson & Jimmy Mundy Bands
  10. Indeed there are. Some unforgettable solos indeed!
  11. I always had some reservations about this album. There are some masterpieces there: especially Ad Lib in Nippon (whata solo!) and of course Isfahan. However, I always felt uncomfortable listening to "Tourist point of View" and "Amad". Lon mentioned that Ellington & Strayhorn brought the eastern sound into their own music. At least in these 2 tracks I humbly disagree. When I listen to these tracks track I indeed hear "a tourist point of view" of Arab/Mid eastern music. full of musical Cliches. Not real feel of the orient, but a caricature of it. The kind of music you'll probably hear if you go to a tourist oriented show in a fancy hotel in an Arab city. Eventhough they didn't used "authentic" instrumentation, the results are as phony to my ears as "Laurence of Arabia" to my eyes. I suppose the way I feel about these tracks is because I'm relatively familiar with Classic Arab music with it's nuances. I suppose that's why I prefer the South-east asian parts of the Far east suite and other pieces as Latin American Suite much more.
  12. I believe you're right Jim! So, Grass Roots' first session, heh?! Thanks.
  13. maybe this will be clearer:
  14. Today: Disc 1 of the complete Coltrane Quartet on Impulse! This is Billy Mitchell (Verve/Smash) Terri Lyne Carrington - TLC & Friends (CEI records) Sonny Rollins & the Big Brass (VME) David Murray & Don Pullen - Live (private recording) Dusco Goykovic - Swinging Macedonia (Enja) Ricky Ford - Ebony Rhapsody (Candid)
  15. They now have: Duke Ellington - Never No Lament: The Blanton - Webster Band for 19.99$ (26.76$ inc S&H)
  16. I found out that you can gently file a "tooth" or two of those solid grips. (These solid spindles don't have "proper" teeth as the regular center grips) Don't over do it, though
  17. Why call it "Cheese"? tastes like processed plastic. Why Call it "Bread"? tastes like cotton-wool. Why call it "Chocolate"? tastes like.... nothing!
  18. Same here. The first track "J&B" worth the price of admission alone.
  19. On my Digipak you can't even break a tooth or two - it's a solid plastic! Yikes!!
  20. Received this yesterday from CDUniverse: and gave a couple of spins. I've never heard this music before and was really excited that Verve had decided to reissue it. First impressions: It's a nice disc - unpretentious, easy going music. Both Mulligan and Hodges were masters in producing such an atmosphere and they do it effortlessly here. 3 tunes are those lazy-blues Hodges was famous of. It's always nice to listen to any of Hodges-Blues tunes. I liked the more finger poppin' "Back Beat" the most. 2 tunes by Mulligan. Both dedicated to Hodges: "Bunny" and "18 Carrots for Rabbit". These two are my favorites in this album. Bunny is sprightly, sunny and lighthearted. 18 is energetic and jovial. The interplay between Mulligan and Hodges here is at its best. This is definitely not an essential Mulligan or Hodges, but it's a nice album to listen to. ps, why using these awful digipaks? They are ugly, cheap looking and in my case at least - the CD almost cracked when I tried taking out of the box. But hey - I'd be happy to buy the CD wrapped in a brown paper bag, if that would endure the continuation of the Verve reissue program.
  21. American Cheese is the perfect match for American bread.
  22. The Billy Mitchell comes in a cheap digipack.
