Album of the Week July 6 through July 13
White Lightning replied to jazzbo's topic in Album Of The Week
I always had some reservations about this album. There are some masterpieces there: especially Ad Lib in Nippon (whata solo!) and of course Isfahan. However, I always felt uncomfortable listening to "Tourist point of View" and "Amad". Lon mentioned that Ellington & Strayhorn brought the eastern sound into their own music. At least in these 2 tracks I humbly disagree. When I listen to these tracks track I indeed hear "a tourist point of view" of Arab/Mid eastern music. full of musical Cliches. Not real feel of the orient, but a caricature of it. The kind of music you'll probably hear if you go to a tourist oriented show in a fancy hotel in an Arab city. Eventhough they didn't used "authentic" instrumentation, the results are as phony to my ears as "Laurence of Arabia" to my eyes. I suppose the way I feel about these tracks is because I'm relatively familiar with Classic Arab music with it's nuances. I suppose that's why I prefer the South-east asian parts of the Far east suite and other pieces as Latin American Suite much more. -

new CD trays where the center hole grip is solid
White Lightning replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I found out that you can gently file a "tooth" or two of those solid grips. (These solid spindles don't have "proper" teeth as the regular center grips) Don't over do it, though -
You Know What Sucks? REALLY Sucks?
White Lightning replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Why call it "Cheese"? tastes like processed plastic. Why Call it "Bread"? tastes like cotton-wool. Why call it "Chocolate"? tastes like.... nothing! -
Same here. The first track "J&B" worth the price of admission alone.

On my Digipak you can't even break a tooth or two - it's a solid plastic! Yikes!!

Received this yesterday from CDUniverse: and gave a couple of spins. I've never heard this music before and was really excited that Verve had decided to reissue it. First impressions: It's a nice disc - unpretentious, easy going music. Both Mulligan and Hodges were masters in producing such an atmosphere and they do it effortlessly here. 3 tunes are those lazy-blues Hodges was famous of. It's always nice to listen to any of Hodges-Blues tunes. I liked the more finger poppin' "Back Beat" the most. 2 tunes by Mulligan. Both dedicated to Hodges: "Bunny" and "18 Carrots for Rabbit". These two are my favorites in this album. Bunny is sprightly, sunny and lighthearted. 18 is energetic and jovial. The interplay between Mulligan and Hodges here is at its best. This is definitely not an essential Mulligan or Hodges, but it's a nice album to listen to. ps, why using these awful digipaks? They are ugly, cheap looking and in my case at least - the CD almost cracked when I tried taking out of the box. But hey - I'd be happy to buy the CD wrapped in a brown paper bag, if that would endure the continuation of the Verve reissue program.

American Cheese is the perfect match for American bread. -
The Billy Mitchell comes in a cheap digipack.

Here's a quote by the great photographer Philip Greenspun that summerizes my feelings toward the subject:

My favorite Fullers are Bone n Bari and Bluesette 1 &2 Don't forget the Jazztet stuff. It's great as well. I especially like Meet the Jazztet, a 1960 session with McCoy Tyner. A must-have.

I hadn't a chance to pick this CD up in time, though I will eventually. Walter Blanding lived in Israel for a few years. (hence "The Olive Tree", I guess.) He was something of the house Sax player in a Tel Aviv Jazz club called Camelot. I think that his contribution to the Israeli Jazz scene was very important. He was able to pursuade many friends of his to come and play in Israel. And for that I'm grateful. I also believe that the influx talented Jazz Israelis in NYC in the last decade had also something to do with him. I cought him play many times in Camelot, most of the times with an Israeli pick up Rhythm session, and I liked what I heard. I liked his tone and attack, I liked the respect he had for the youngsters who often played with him. Some of them have continued to NYC and gained some recognition of their talents. I especially remember the time when Blanding and Eric Reed played duo in Camelot. Blanding brought a Bari Sax as well as his tenor this evevning (he would do it from time to time) and it was a smoking evening!
