  1. I second that. Love this session!
  2. Happy Birthday Moose!!
  3. Jim, Joe, randy: What a great gift! (even for those of us who don't celebrate the holidays). Thank you sooo much - you put a BIG smile on my face. Thanks!
  4. Happy birthday Jim, and many happy returns!!
  5. vibes, I LOVe those 2 CDs you don't for!!! For me it's the Jimmy Smith set. Didn't do nothing for me. There are many better recordings by Jimmy smith out there (and in my collection). This made the set IMO - a complete waste of money. There are sets that I KNOW I won't like so I don't bother buying, such as the Four Freshmen and Bobby Hackett sets.
  6. I'll be interested to know your (everybody's) definition of Listeners and Collectors. It seems to me everyone has a diferent definition thus categorizes oneself differently than another would.
  7. A few days ago I asked you guuys to come up with some questions re Slava Ganelin and/or his trio. Unfortunately, I got little response. I guess it's because Ganelin is not a household name in the States (he's not a household name in Israel as well ). Anyways, Yesterday a memorial concert took place to remember one of Israel's pioneers in Jazz - Roman Kunsman. Ganelin played there an original number he composed in memory of Kunsman. I thought some of you may be interested in hearing it, so Click here BTW - the alarm clock is an integral part of the number. The emcee is not... B
  8. Happy B-Day, Dmitry and many happy returns!!
  9. Got the BFT4 discs yesterday. Thanks Jim! Spinned the Disc 1 last night, and that's what I came up with: 1. Nice piano intro. Sound Siver-ish to me. It was a surprise when the horns joined in after 2:30+ mins. I thought it was a solo piano cut. I think I know the player, but I can't name them. The Tenor sounds Texan. The Fluglehorn(?) is VERY nice. Is that a Monk tune? 2. Didn't like this track! Sounds like a rough sketch of a cartoon sountrack. 3. Didn't do much for me. The sax player doesn't say much. The trumpet has great sound. Maybe a latino group? Some latin feel in that track, though not a latin style track. 4. Sounds like a 70s big-band. Din't do much to me as well. The only nice solo here is from the Bari Sax. Others didn't say much in there solos. 5. JB! Love this track! 6. Yikes! Bluh! Cheesy strings and an altogether a Zzzzzzzzzz feel. 7. A mont tune. Like this track a lot. Strange, beautifully-haunting. Is that a clarinet or a sax? Probably the latter but sounds like a clarinet in a few places. Is it Giuffre? 8. Secret Love. Nice tenor. don't know whao the organ player is - But WHAT"S WITH THAT AWEFUL FENDER BASS???!!! 9. Bluh 10. Dixi drums, no idea who this is. 11. Didn't do much for me. WW1 ditty 12. WTF?! Nice tenor. Zorn maybe? I love the Bass player! 13. I like that cut. 2 cool school sax players. is one of them Bud Shank? 14. Almost like being in love. Another Pres disciple. Or maybe it's Pres himself? If not - maybe an un-inspired Getz. 15. Love this track. Hamp & Fatha Hines? or is it Guarnieri? Great pianist anyway. Now on to the second disc...
  10. Taken recently in Alaska. Don't I look like a cowman in these rubber boots?
  11. Jim, keep on doing what you're doing. We're all behind you 100%
  12. Is that COOL or what?!!! B) B)
  13. Thanks, Jim! A great Q. Keep them coming!
  14. Ku-umba Frank Lacy certainly belong to this list! And not forget the salesman-looking-but-often-hilarious the GREAT-GREAT BILL HARRIS !!!
  15. Longer than Woody Shaw??
  16. Another absolutely superb Mariano, and to my ears, very similar to "Deep in a Dream" is "Autumn Dreams" (Alfa Jazz 1991), with Mal Waldron trio which was just been reissued by "Pony Canyon" label. tracks are: Floating Cherry Blossoms; Greensleeves; Cry Me A River; Early Autumn; Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise; Autumn Dreams; Randy; Autumn Leaves; 'Til Autumn; The Thrill Is Gone.
  17. A friend of mine is suppose to interview the pianist slava Ganelin. I'm hoping to collect many fascinating questions for this interview, plus any suggestions for research sources into Galenin's work. Thanks! Barak
  18. Wynton Kelly - The perfect pianist - as a soloist , especially with Mr. PC and Jimmy Cobb; as a leader of Miles' Rhythm, section for many years; as the pianist of Dizzy's big band; as an accompanist to Dinah Washington. His recordings as a sideman are numerous. For me, his participation in a recording is a stamp of quality. I can't recall any off date by mr. kelly. So, happy birthday, Wynton Kelly! What are your favorite recoedings with mr. kelly?
  19. What Dan said
  20. Israel's greatest leader ever, and one of the greatest leaders in the 20th century, died 30 years ago today. Today, we can only wish for leaders of his kind: Ones that are able to make difficult decisions in crucial times; Ones that can be leaders to their countries, not just politicians; Ones that has their country's future on their mind, not just the next election; Ones that will enjoy reading phoilosophy books and the Bible whenever there's a few minutes time; Ones that will live a humble life; And even ones that will be able to spend a few days in a Burmese tempel to "clear his mind"; Oh, I do miss Ben Gurion and his type ~sigh~
  21. Please - No more new recordings of I remember Clifford!
  22. Actually, coffee drinking was one of the hardest things for me to get used to while in DC. And I'm not talking 'bout that muddy fluid you call "American coffee", but rather the American espressos and Capucinos. Israel is a haven for Espesso Bars, and the espresso and capucino culture is very wide spread. To the Israeli palate - the best taste is the Italian-style coffe, with manufacturers such as Illy, Segafredo et al. For that reason I took me a loooooong time for me to get used to the "soury" taste the espressos and capucinos at coffee places such as Starbucks et al. BTW, Starbucks, who succeeds in almost every place it opens a branch - was forceds to close all its branches in Israel less than 2 years after it openned them. Simply put - the Coffee was not to the liking of the Israelis.
