  1. That is really wonderful news, Allan, and so richly deserved. I have for a long time wished that the McArthur people found you—I hope they do, but this is a splendid start. Really, really great news!!!!
  2. I guess her biggest hit was "Romance in the Dark," but I prefer "Why Don't You Do Right?, both recordings benefit from the presence of Big Bill; Broonzy. Peggy Lee also did a wonderful version of the latter song.
  3. I have been using Photo Bucket for a few years, and I recommend it. Your posted image will not disappear as long as you don't delete it from PhotoBucket, or whatever service you choose—there are several good ones.
  4. Sure, they might even get past bebop.
  5. I can kick myself for not asking Benny Goodman to autograph a picture of me.
  6. Is there an Irwin Corey album signed by Phil?
  7. It is that, too, but I say "insult" because Wynton's talent and own output pales by comparison to that of people whose work he so arrogantly autographs.
  8. Always glad to clarify. As for the 2-LP set, that was the first release in the "Living Legends" series. I meant it to be an introduction to the LPs that followed. To avoid people having to buy duplicates, I deliberately programmed the double LP with material that would not reappear on an individual issue. Some were different tunes, others were alternate takes, but there was one exception: Kid Thomas' Jada, which was recorded August 18, 1960 and produced by Herb Friedwald (Will's father). It was the only session not supervised by me, so I didn't have extra material. The Fantasy people used the 2-LP tracks to pad the CD reissues.
  9. Wynton's signature on some of these items can be seen as an insult rather than justification for the inflated asking price.
  10. Since there seems to be some confusion re the Cottrell tracks on Riverside, here are two pages from a session notebook I kept all those year ago. They may help to clear up any questions regarding the Louis Cottrell sessions. I did 18 selections in two sessions, not having been too happy with Slow Drag on the first one. Fantasy botched up a lot of things when they put this material out, obviously wanting to milk it for as much as possible, regardless of artistic merit. I originally put together 2 LPs. Hope this helps.
  11. Nobody said that it would be one and a half consecutive days, so we might get half of May 26, 1926—the day he was born. Opening shots of labor, a newsboy runs past the house: "Symon Petliura assassinated," he yells, holding up the same headline. A midwife rushes into the room and asks for a basin and pitcher of water. The neighbor pops in and says he just heard on the radio that Sholom Schwartzbard did it. "Did what?", asks Dr. Davis, the anxious father to be. "Killed Petliura," the neighbor says. There is a loud groan from the lady in the bed, "Oh, no, he is dead?" With that, she gives birth and an emerging modal primal scream fills the theater before it seamlessly segues to a muted trumpet solo. We are now in a California studio, the date is January 21, 1949, and we are witnessing another birth—that of the cool. We stay with Miles for the rest of that day, then fade to black around midnight.
  12. Let's hope that they increase the number of days with each sequel—aiming, of course, for a whole week, but not a week like any other week.
  13. That was the very young Dizzy, before he matured into what we now think of as his style, another sort of "change". Similarly the Four Brothers tenormen all sounded vaguely Lesterish as young musicians in the Herman band, before they established their distinctive Getz or Sims or Cohn styles - not to say that each didn't go on evolving in these styles over the rest of their careers. I didn't know that there was an age limit on this question. Fact is that Dizzy's work could have been mis-identified as Roy's at one point (when he appeared on Hampton's Victor session, for example).
  14. Dizzy Gillespie used to sound like Roy Eldridge. and Betty Carter like Sarah Vaughan. Of course they all probably sounded like hell at the onset.
  15. False syllogism for me - true, true, & unrelated. Unrelated? How about human reaction to death?
  16. Pardon my candor, but there are thousands of children and young people dying every day through no fault of their own. My compassion goes to them before I even think of shedding a sigh for someone who could have had a better-than-average life, but threw it away to satisfy her own desires. No sympathy for Amy from me, but I do have some for her family and close friends, who are victims of her lack of consideration. People seem to mourn her death because it means there won't be another album for them to enjoy. Think about the current famine in Africa, the innocent lives taken by a right-wing madman in Oslo, the Japanese earthquake victims, etc. If you don't find that Amy's departure gains remarkable insignificance, think again.
  17. Unfortunately, there are itchy trigger fingers in the house.
  18. As I see it, the really sad news is not that she died, but that she didn't live. Did this final chapter surprise anyone here?
  19. Of course he did, Greg, but I don't think there were any cameras around. There are rumors that Phil Schaap has the snaps and won't let anyone see them.
  20. Get back to us when you find snapshots of Hank walking on water. That would merit all-caps.
  21. My last post showed a NYC temp of 103º, but it soon climbed to 104º Now, at 6PM, its way down to 101º, time to celebrate
  22. PR types are often shallow people. This one is no exception.
  23. Valerie Wilmer introduced us in the '70, and I got to know Joe Lee fairly well (the only jazz musician I knew of in New York who got around on a bicycle). A very down-to-earth guy. This is sad news, indeed.
  24. Yes, yes, yes, it's Obama and the gang, but I think we are mature enough to nopt have a fit because this isn't exiled to the political forum. Check this out...Obama, the opera.
