  1. I'm on a similar path but about a year behind you. Glad to hear you found someone else, Rob! At this point I'm not interested in any kind of relationship EVER again, but I realize I'm still too close to the event. I'm hoping that changes over time. Anyway, congratulations! There's always hope! I have a bad feeling that I'm just a bit up the same road from both of you, but we'll see... Aww man!
  2. Your posts have been more mature lately, too. Actually I'm not kidding about that!
  3. I think he sounds frickin' fantastic! Tonally, not that far from Wayne Krantz, his predecessor in this band. Here's a clip I've watched a bunch of times of that lineup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpO5ST84cwU (and my favorite quote from the comments section: note choice- awesome shirt choice- horrifying ) But Adam has some great stuff of his own, pretty abstract and "slippery" most of the time, and I like what he's doing here.
  4. Musically, it's been a bit slow in terms of number of gigs this year, but there were some beautiful experiences for me - Tel Aviv, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Detroit Jazz Fest, the week I did with the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker Project, as well as some really fun nights at some of our regular haunts. Lots of small blessings along the way. Probably too many to count, since I always include things like nature sightings, companionship, a good meal, forgetting to move my car all day from a 2-hour zone but not getting a ticket, and other such things. More good than bad, in other words. :rsmile:
  5. That dvd is fucking great. Metheny's liner notes included.
  6. Picked this release up today - so far, very good!
  7. Nothing better than a decision that feels just right! Looking forward to the hang. Smooth sailing, amigo!
  8. What do you got for "organissimo"?
  9. Keep U Clams
  10. Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble Along with Johnny E, Phil Kelly leads a big band, so what are you talking about Barak? There's two drummer/leaders on this board alone!
  11. YOU HAVE THE JAZZ, BUT WE WANT THE FUNK!
  12. Just please don't piss ON the beards!
  13. I sure hope that was the footage from The End of Civilization Pt.1: The Metal Years (from back in the day), and not a recent interview. That would be REALLY sad.
  14. Goddamn! He must have really needed a computer! Well, I do know how you feel, though I only had to get a shredded screen repaired. I've been planning on getting a more secure storm door; this comes as a reminder to get that thing ordered!
  15. Laz deleted his day-old response. Was it the wrong answer?
  16. Boy, the selections-of-the-month sure do suck this time.
  17. Yep - that's how I think of it as well.
  18. I'm curious about this. What don't you like about it?
  19. I'd say most jazz pianists have studied at least some classical music/theory/technique, for sure. I've read about a few (Geri Allen, Michael Weiss) who practice primarily classical music during free time. Technique is what a musician has to deal with everytime he/she starts to play. No way around it. Which techniques someone uses depends on what they are going for. And the same basic technique can be used to achieve very different results (both Roscoe Mitchell and Kenny G use circular breathing, as an extreme example). As far as books go, there are a lot of them out there now. You can find some nuggets in there if you look. Branford advocates listening over book exercises though, and actually neither he, Ellis, nor Galper mentioned learning from books in the quotes you gave. Though most people do learn classical music (or etudes) from the written scores.
  20. Same with the D'Angelicos I guess. But hell, Japan are old-skool luthiers at this point, what with Korea and everybody else in the game.
  21. Looks pretty slick. Where are they built?
  22. I might check this out at some point. Really enjoyed An Anthropologist on Mars.
  23. I'll be sure to give it a listen - congrats on all the good stuff going on!
  24. Do folks here dig Stefano? Haven't seen much discussion.
