  1. never, not in THOSE days! no, THAT was the one that was a hit with all the chicks, they say that cat jim is a bad...
  2. you paid full price for that, fess up!? it was that Karla Bley / Steve Swallow album from BFT 4 that was a cut-out.
  3. What's the face material made of? Never used the ink jet ready discs. Is it a paper coating??
  4. Re: Track !! Doh. I have this courtesy of the barker hissef. Thanks again Cary.
  5. Boy Disc Two is even tougher than the first. Not too well versed on harmon mutes and the whos that play them but Cary likes his muted horn fer certain. T1- No clue here and trying to like this line up. T2- Some bootlegged Miles. Is that too splashy to be Tony Williams? Sound like him to me and I could not pick that out. Is this the Japan concert w/ Rivers?? I'm really just guessing. T3- Now not knowing tone of vibists I might actually bet money that this is Hutcherson. Cary turned me on to much of Hutch's out of print stuff years ago and thanks again! This, if it is, is probably in my files. T4- paging JimR! T5- Another piece that reminds me of the break on disc one. I'm guessing Dave Douglas here. Very nice piece. The electrofied keybs remind me of some of those later day Sidran albums. This is a pretty cool tune that I first passed by on take one. T6- More mutes ... not Miles but ... T7- Whoa boy! I see that Marty sez he met him (other thread). I actually sketched him at a club in NYC when he was sitting in w/ the Messengers. Butcher paper and crayons at every table so how could one resist. My table mates tore it out and showed him. He came over during a break and said he liked it (he was a big dude and I was afraid he might not) and kept it. Nice guy!! I finally got this disc via eBay a couple weeks back (hence how i might know who it is). Fantastic session!!! What was I waiting for? 'Cups' runnin over! Mac is on fire and playing quite in that Cool Struttin' fashion here. Walter even has some moments of - "hey ain't that Sonny". T8- Another pretty one. Shoot I got so excited bouncing around to that last one that this has me trying to settle down. Gots no clue. T9- Again very nice... it will be nice to hear what these last two are. Nice cuts to include. T10- Wait what's this. No discs with me but this is ARIC'S main face. "Swingin @ Sugar Rays" ? T11- Damn, what is this. I got this on the tip of the vibe mallet. Hutcherson again reprising a standard of his?? It is the trumpet players date, no? This is cookin'! T12- Oh a tricky one, Samba de Orpheus ... but based upon that debate on the BNBB we are not certain that this is who it sez it is are we or did I just miss who it really is when Soul Stream figured it all out. Anyway it's GG from that album named after midwestern beer. T13- Knowing the completist in .:. I'm tossing up a guess that this is from the Wilson Mosaic. I recall that there are some weird tunes on that and that .:. has it for the Hutcherson who is not heard here but if that is not it then I am a fool. Not sure how much I get into the hand drums and berimbau in the lush big band setting as I usually like that exotica chees on top. If it is that PacJazz set then maybe all ya'll will go and buy it so it goes out of print and i can call Mosaic and get the first disc only. A very nice couple of discs and seeing the few results already it seems you have stumped the big guns over on thread one. Anxious to lurk amid the discussion.
  6. Jimmy Smith was truly my ONLY intro to jazz when I was a kid. The single of "Walk on the Wild Side" was on the jukebox at the diner where we would eat about once a week. Many a nickel went into that machine as that cut was also played at home via 'Bashin!' and probably the only tune recognizable to me in those days.
  7. I think the solution would be to simply dress the fairer half in ball gowns and corsages.
  8. Milford Graves!?
  9. Today, do we even need to say who did track sixteen.
  10. Me too to all that! I recently put together a Verve sides comp and gave a review copy to a friend just a couple of nights ago in that "you need this" way that as we jazz fans do. The 'Monster' is certainly worthy but I think Verve must read the same reviews that are all about. Silly! That was my first exposure to my 'moniker' cut. I can still listen to "Walk on the Wild Side" and never tire of that complete throw down solo! Those Blue Notes are as fine as can be but there is still something about those Nelson, Schifrin etc charts that get me! What is the greatest is that we get to choose these two dramatically different stylizations from the Master. How can you not just go wild with the groove on "Ape Woman" or "Burning Spear"!
  11. Thanks for posting and continuing to do so! I saw the Pont Neuf installation when he covered it back in '84 maybe. Still have a little piece of it stashed away.
  12. Damn! is right!
  13. WOW! Quite the collection on disc one. Excellent listenings!!! Just guesses for me with only a couple known to be. No peeking of course and straight off the top which ain't much. T1- Absolute vibe phenome ... is this you Cary after some Evelynn Wood course. I was waiting for it to break into Flight of the Bumble Bee. Top notch starter for certain, natch. T2- My guess here from a disc I have never heard, but I am presuming this might be 'Blues for Smoke'? Hefty thumping with a bit of humor under the paws is my reasoning. T3- Byron with Glover doing "Ask me Now" or a Monk to be Googled later? T4- Another from a disc I have yet to hear (maybe) - sounds like it might be a cut from the Parker and Drake disc on AumFidelity? The trappist gets better marks from me than the percussionist accompaniment. T5- A nineties Blue Note release sound but as for who the two horns are I have not a clue. The piece is just swinging like mad. It's amazing how close the tone is for both. This is damn fine! T6- Very nice mellow break. I have got to think about this one (not that it will help). T7- Has that moody ECM heady vibe w/o vibes this time. A bit of a freaky intro. Baron on hand drums maybe w/ Abercrombie or McLaughlin. I love these sonic sculptings but don't come back to them as much as I should. T8- A modern Miles influence is nice. Any .:.relativity.:. at work here. T9- Nice pick up with the walk segue from geet to double bass. This past quartet of tunes has a very nice flow. Bonus! I like this metallic tone from the vibes and I'm sure that might give it away to the resident quasimodos. This just swings like mad. T10- Another addition to the theme. The last five are quite a team. But after this piece takes off into the fisty blues I burnt out a bit. I like the unfolding going on here but did not need the glare of what was inside. T11- I like this track a lot ... a lower register and more deliberate Roy Campbell? and if it is I'll butter my hat cause I usually don't like that guy. Assuming, based upon the bass and the fact that it leads into .... T12- Wm. Parker's "Percy" from (edit oops): 'Painter's Spring' NOT 'O'Neal's Porch'. (big nod to the Air of the windy city.) T13- A beautiful tune here. A modern reprise of track #2. T14- "RM" by a lustier version of Jeanne Lees? T15- An Ellington tune(?) or just a veiled version of "Nature Boy" with that "Angel Eyes" underbelly... this is a beautiful piece and one of the standouts among the many. That sour sax will call it for the big guns. So I will just listen again and again... that "cry" in there might be Booker. hmmmm. T16- Another "cry" of sorts as Ca-R(a)y "laces" up some greasy "Mo-Jo" for a closer! * Very nice indeed! I dashed through a bit after a couple listens as I'm too curious. edit: * as I re-read and it looks like I might think #16 is Ray but of course it's not since it's one of the two I did know!
  14. listening to disc one now... NICE! cary, can we break up the disc-cussions into two separate threads? in the past it was tough to have it all in one. thanks.
  15. ... and he was listening to this!

  18. Zorn was recently in Boston to discuss himself:
  19. The Tubas are on this one released by BeatGoesPublic. Dean Rudland writes of that same feeling that 'baryshnikov' tells. Once you wade through the cheese on that twofer the meat is tasty! Classic song titles, too. A fellow boardmember made me a comp of burned goodies from all those Jazzland and EMI held lps. Highly under-rated and deserving of greater recognition and all that. Lytle spun in my car for a whole summer a few years back after discovering all of his available releases.
  20. Up to tell me what a fair price might be for the Basie LIVE Roulette CDs sans box and book. Recently spotted. B-)
  21. Don't forget Tatum / Stingley, Noj.
  22. That track on the 'Gundown' album is "Erotico (The Burglars)" featuring most prominently Shelly Hirsch warbl-lizing in pained ecstacy over Frisell's dog killer guitar. Patton is coloring the whole thing and creating an acutal groove in spite of it all. Most certainly worth at least hearing along with the title track. Now "Two Lane Highway" is another story! "Big" John is more than just a Jersey barrier and his grease tossing with Albert Collins halfway through the trip is well worth the toll fare. Horvitz holds down the roadhouse pretty well on this, too.
  23. re: Another WorkOut don't forget Matt Mahurian got into hot water over that Time magazine dark-side O.J. cover.
  24. I read that the tune "Aubade" is co-penned by Hill ... completist alert!!
