Just snagged a combo SACD player for $200. Bought Live-Evil, a long-time favorite of mine. Amazing ... you are in the club, front row ... Eric

Hey Rooster and Free for All, I live in KC and must admit that I have not seen live jazz here in a couple of years. Frankly, I am not even sure where to go anymore. I used to go to Jardines quite a bit and sometime the jazz club at Plaza III. I do hear live music - at the Levee (typcially funk bands) and BBs (blues of course). It is rather sad, there just does not seem to be much action here. I do hear live jazz, but typically when I travel to NY. I would love to hook up with you guys some time and check out the scene. Which Blue Note do you think needs RVG treatment?
Eric replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Re-issues
Andrew Hill - Andrew. Probably the best non-CD (anywhere) Blue Note title left, IMHO of course :-) Eric -
I think Jim has nailed it. For my taste, a three and a half stars kind of CD. I could really go for a complete program of tunes like the first and last, which just ooze with that perfect KB guitar sound/tone. I lose a bit of interest on the vocals, however nice they are and some of the softer stuff. I think I will burn a CD of the best of this one and his last one on Concord ... Eric

up for Chuck ...

I picked up a used TOCJ a few years ago and have really enjoyed it ever since. It definitely sounds of the era, but really doesn't sound that dated to me. It is very unique in McDuff's catalog and quite frankly, is probably my favorite of his. To me, there is more burn or intensity in his playing here than on his pure funk stuff. Great pick! Eric

Chuck, Is it still possible to pre-order the Eager and Rouse CDs? Thanks, Eric
-
Ha - of course - for a small fee. Does anybody have any comment on the Sonny Clark or the Hawkins? Thanks Eric

Go to www.cduniverse.com and type in Uptown and do a label search. Titles come out under a couple of captions, but I think that will get you there. Eric
-
I will definitely buy this. Have most of the other stuff mentioned above. I noticed at CD Universe a bunch of Parker CDs issued by Ember. I presume they are all live. Does anyone have any insight on them? Thanks, Eric

Rooster, I love AH, but IMHO, this is not worthwhile. Very meandering, plodding even. I sold my copy back a couple years ago ... Better to score Nefertiti if you don't have it - very strong! Eric
-
BTW, Nefertiti is a great Hill trio album from 1976 on East Wind. Mostly Hill tunes and a nice mix of tempos. Definitely reminds me of the best of the BN years ... Eric

I can't get this CD to play on my DVD player (which plays "normal" music CDs). Any ideas? Eric

The New Blue Note Cover Book
Eric replied to Soulstation1's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Got it last Christmas ... it is not full-sized ... maybe 5x5? It is OK, not great surprises ... Eric -
Help 'Rooster' pick a BN cover to use as an Avatar
Eric replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Rooster, Are you a member of the Urban Core? Seems like they would be right up your alley. Next mtg is 7/24 at 5:30 at the Rockhill Tennis Club. Call or email Marion Wheeler if you are interested: 816/822-8629 or marion.wheeler@kcurbancoregroup.org. Eric -
This one really kicks butt ... Eric

Mike does a pretty good job desribing the two although I prefer "Undiscovered" for the reasons he cites. There is also an earlier one on Music Masters, I think, called "X Field" which is even better (quartet with Greg Osby). It is OOP, but should be easy enough to locate. Eric
-
And in classic BN Big Brother form, you are only allowed to "skip" 6 songs per hour. Thanks for protecting me. Eric
-
I think the way to go is to select "all classics". I would like to hear the current stuff (Osby et al), but can't deal with the endless crap-ola. Eric
-
Have it on now and they are playing a new song off the upcoming Terrance Blanchard album (Footprints). Perhaps I should have typed Blandchard - very much of a smoothy jazz feel to it. Too bad ... I was looking forward to this one. Eric

I just snagged both of the Woody Shaw/Tone Jansa CDs ... very nice ... would definitely recommend to Woody fans ... Eric

Woody Shaw in 1978 DownBeat
Eric replied to BERIGAN's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Great stuff. It really is sad that Woody is no longer with us. I saw him in Chapel Hill NC circa 1985 - it was a great show. I can only imagine what he might have accomplished in the ~ 15 since his very unfortunate passing. He was an original and did not give a crap about what anyone thought, or so it seemed. Where is the Woody of today??? Eric -
My top ten jazz lps of all time (which changes every week) usually includes The Fox. It is special. Eric
