That's a sketch right there... and of course, the details are sketchy as well....

You posted it on a Sunday, most likely the reason...plus the 3-4 reviews I have done in 5-6 years have taken a few days anywho. I have seen nasty reviews actually, I think they must just filter for language.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes!
BERIGAN replied to billyboy's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Right about the ol' peanuts. I remember reading them years ago(A cousin older than me had the pocketbooks) and thinking it could have been someone else writing, instead of Schultz. Like both "Styles" just different. -
The Complete Calvin and Hobbes!
BERIGAN replied to billyboy's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You might want to get them someday Alexander. My old Bloom County books are well, getting old, and a bit musty smelling, Calvin and Hobbes can't be far behind!~ -
Man, quite the crime! Sure, send him home that day for being such a troublemaker, but suspended for the rest of the year?(OK, 10 days but still...) Hell, I saw a kid flip off a teacher in Junior High, and he was back the next day. Mother's call gets son in hot water BY ANGELIQUE SOENARIE Staff Writer Kevin Francois gave up his lunch break to talk to his mother, but it ended up costing him the rest of the school year. Francois, a junior at Spencer High School in Columbus, was suspended for disorderly conduct Wednesday after he was told to give up his cell phone at lunch while talking to his mother who is deployed in Iraq, he said. His mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, left in January for a one-year tour and serves with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. "This is our first time separated like this," said Francois, 17, on Thursday. Bates came to Fort Benning with her son from Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga. She enrolled him at Spencer in August. Since her deployment overseas, Francois, whose father was killed when he was 5 years old, lives with a guardian who has five children in Columbus. The incident happened when Francois received a call from his mother at 12:30 p.m., which he said was his lunch break. Francois said he went outside the school building to get a better reception when his mother called. A teacher who saw Francois on his phone told him to get off the phone. But he didn't. According to the Muscogee County School District Board of Education's policy, students are allowed to have cell phones in school, but cannot use them during school hours. "They are really allowed to have those cell phones so that after band or after chorus or after the debate and practices are over they have to coordinate with the parents," said Alfred Parham, assistant principal at Spencer. "They're not supposed to use them for conversating back and forth during school because if they were allowed to do that, they could be text messaging each other for test questions." Francois said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom." Francois said the teacher tried to take the phone, causing it to hang up. The student said he then went with the teacher to the school's office where he surrendered his phone. His mother called again at 12:37 p.m. and left a message scolding her son about hanging up and telling him to answer the phone when she calls. Control issue Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction when he was asked to give up the cell phone and told about the school's cell phone policy. "Kevin got defiant and disorderly with Mr. Turner and another assistant principal," Parham said Thursday. "He got defiant with me. He refused to leave Mr. Turner's office. When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days." Wendall Turner is another assistant principal at Spencer. Parham said the student used profanity when he was taken into the office. He said he tried to work out something with the student. But Francois said he was too frustrated he couldn't answer the phone when his mother called him the second time. "I even asked Kevin, 'You know we can try to work something out to where if your mother wants to call you she can call you at the school,'" Parham said. "So we've tried to work with Kevin and we're going to continue to try to work with Kevin and his mother and his relatives. In the course of good order and discipline, we have to abide by our policy." Francois admitted he was partially at fault for his behavior but said he should have been allowed to talk to his mother. "I was mad at the time, but I feel now maybe I should've went about it differently," he said. "Maybe I should've just waited outside to pick up the phone. But I don't I feel I should've changed any of my actions. I feel I was right by not hanging up the phone." For Francois, he said he gets to hear from his mother once a month, and phone calls vary depending on when she can use the phone in Iraq. Francois said his mother calls as late as 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. and tries to catch him during hours he's awake. He said the phone call Wednesday was the first time she called him while he was at school. Francois, who said he's been struggling with his grades in school, wants to go back to school and finish the rest of his year. He fears he may have pay for summer school because of his punishment. "My grades had been low, but I was bringing them up. My grades were coming back up. On one of my report cards I had like a 'F' in one of my classes, but I brought it back up to a low 'C.' This just brought me all the way down." http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgere...ws/11575912.htm

There were some comments on Ventura on another thread you started, just in case you missed them.... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...=0entry337920 Some good stuff out there. I just dug up the Simitar cd Runnin' Wild, now out of print like all cds from this defunct label.($7.99 on amazon) From 1956 with Dave McKenna, Richard Davis, Mousey Alexander, and Billy Bean. Ventura plays tenor, alto, baritone and bass on it. 2 alternate tracks are on this cd, but Allmusic says 2 tracks on the original lp were left off for some reason. (Cd is only 34 minutes long) Also have the no doubt legit release from Definitive records Charlie Ventura Quartet and Quinet 1951-52 Verve Studio sessions. Looks like all the music is on the Classics releases that have since come out. I mentioned on the other thread that high on an Open Mike was in the Proper box set, which has a few of the Charlie Ventura and Bill Harris Live at the Three Deuces recordings that are on 2 High Note cds. (mainly 1947 recordings)The 2 High Note cds have probably my favorite Charlie Ventura recordings. Very loose,(They were playing Well past midnight, not many people listening, and they let it all hang out) and with the great Bill Harris and Dave Tough, he was clearly inspired.

Great ad Chris! I don't recall Delta's 747's being anywhere near as spacious! My Mom worked for Delta for many years, and back in the 70's into the mid 80's, no one flew 1st class it seemed. That's where they "stuck" us Non-rev passengers. When more businessmen started to upgrade their tickets/use frequent flyer miles. and rich folk forked over the money more freely, we got stuck, truly stuck in Coach, most of the time. Could not believe people paid so much money to be jammed in like sardines. At 6 foot, 200+ pounds, I felt like a giant, and of course, was always the "skinny" guy in the middle seat! At least the service was pretty good, up to a few years ago, now, no one seems to care. And now, most airlines don't even have pillows, and Delta has cut back on meals on most of their domestic flights! Delta's 747's don't seem quite as nice as AA, but still, better than today. Can't you just see bean counters a few years later saying..."But, we can put more rows in, many more!"

I've loved that movie since I was a kid. I'm also a fan of William Powell movies in general, especially the Thin Man series. Glad to see there are some Thin Man/William Powell fans! No, not forgetting Myrna Loy either! I really like their non Thin Man movies as well. Anyone else??? Perhaps my favorite is 1941's Love Crazy(To keep Myrna from divorcing him, he pretends to be insane, so she can't, lotta laughs!) Very nearly as good are 1940's I Love You Again(Loy is about to divorce dull as dishwater Powell, but a blow on the head turns him back into his former self, a con man!) 1937's Double Wedding has Powell as a bohemian artist,(An early hippy really. ) and the classic Libeled Lady, from 1936 starring Spencer Tracy and Jean Harlow as well. The only one on dvd right now. The Senator Was Indiscreet (directed by George S. Kaufman!!!) is terrible, and see only has a small role in it, so you can skip that one.

Season 2 is out, with virtually the same box, so no one will even notice! Ok, slight differences, but if a retailer only has one, you think it is still season one for sale.

I agree. I've seen a lot of movies where people go to Mars and things always go badly for them. Wait for Mars to come to us! So true!!!

Just make damn sure it is a reputable company whichever way you go. I am sure you have heard the horror stories of companies holding people's furnishings hostage, til they cough up more money.(Just the type of crime that doesn't interest state governments all that much) Might want to figure some way to ship/insure cds separately as well.

What to get a new first time mom on Mother's day
BERIGAN replied to Johnny E's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Get her a gift certificate to a day spa. And do what Ron said as well! -
It's the only Criterion I own. Love it! Well, didn't always, I remember finally seeing the whole movie(Used to see scene of Powell putting Lombard in the shower all the time) and remember thinking it wasn't as laugh out loud funny as I thought it would be. But, caught parts of it thru the years, and started to see why it was/is considered a classic. Nice to finally see a good copy of a public domain title, hats off to Criterion for doing it. Blooper reel is great as well, but way too short.

My Mom was up to 3 packs a day when she quit in the late 70's. COLD TURKEY! (See a pattern here? ) For her, she had to replace the habit with something, so she took up heroin. Oh wait, no....chewing sunflower seeds. She had a huge bag in the car and munched on them all the time. It really did help. Expect to put on a few pounds at first, but better to be a few pounds overweight, than have lung Cancer. Good luck!

Well, this cd is most likely used, but I have seen cds, videos and dvds with used stickers on them even with 3 unbroken seals on their cases (3 on a dvd at least) And what about cds from overseas??? Many "new" ones come in that cheap wrap...I have heard that many are shipped without being wrapped...doesn't make a lot of sense, but I have bought many cds this way that were clearly untouched.

Thanks for the 2 articles Chaney! Though typical of even a good story in the NYT, there are mistakes... So, The Bob Newhart show was one, Newhart was two, but Bob wasn't the 3rd self titled show??? Just watched a DVD of the best of the Dean Martin variety show, with Bob doing a routine with Dean about returning a bad toupee. (We never see it under Bob's hat) He had Dean cracking up, insulting Dean with comments such as did he really work with Jerry Lewis, and wishing he was working with a good straight man.
