  1. Hey Tonym, no need to apologize. I recognize most Christmas music falls into the novelty category, I'm sure people don't listen toMiles Davis' Blue Xmas repeatedly like they might with Kind of Blue. So, I'm not talking profound musical experience here. Still, I am driving my family crazy with this stuff. Couw, thanks for the tips, I'll check'em out.
  2. I admit it, I am a sucker for holiday music. The Jimi Hendrix Christmas medley, James Brown Christmas (Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto), various other jazz, blues, folk or bluegrass compilations, I get sucked in, I can't help it (I have drawn the line at John Tesh). My favorite piece of Christmas music though is Charles Brown's Please Come Home For Christmas, a song so good it trancends the novelty aspect, I think. I've picked up quite a few jazz Christmas discs through the years and have seen an increase in blues and r'n'b Christmas discs the last few years. This summer I grabbed the soudtrack from Scrooged after having been on the lookout for it for a few years. Anyway, anybody have any other Christmas music favorites I should be on the lookout for?
  3. JazzDaddy, thanks for posting the AAJ thread. I picked up several of the BeeHive releases when they were new, I was working in a record store at the time. The lps were in high quality sleeves and some came with inserts with photos on glossy paper which I thought was a nice touch. Nice productions all way round.
  4. I don't have a lot of Moody but I am partial to some of his Argo material including Last Train From Overbrook which I have on a 70's twofer. I checked at Half.com and I see the cd issue of same is listed for $48! http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid...=1876&meta_id=2
  5. Bill, you are my hero.
  6. Ouch!
  7. A strong second for HHB Burn-It, I've had one for a couple of years. As Lon notes, you can use computer cdr's, not just audio, which is quite a bit cheaper. Mine has a remote (I think they all do) and you just push a button on it while sitting on the couch to insert track marks. I haven't had any discs that played back with 2 seconds gaps from this (and I have distributed plenty hither and yon). Definitely my favorite toy from the last 10 years or so.
  8. Strong second to easytree. Lots of good stuff here and searchable by genre. A couple of the more active uploaders have developed some great graphics to go along with there shows. The most windows I've had open at one time: 8.
  9. It doesn't fit exactly but I would have liked this to also include the 1956 Metronome All Star session. Has that been out on cd? Would have made a nice bonus, unless Mosaic or someone else could gather all the Metronome sessions together. Can't think of the other magazines that sponsored All Star dates off the top of my head.
  10. Looks like a case of unbridled enthusiasm.
  11. Keno Duke, Sense of Values on Strata East. Nothing earth shaking but a personal favorite of mine with Frank Strozier, George Coleman, Harold Mabern and Lisle Atkinson. Also, on Accurate Records a date by the Consuelo Jon Quintet called Last Sunday Morning. Featuring Consuelo Candelaria - piano, John Hazilla-dms., Billy Pierce- saxes, Tom Varner-Fr.Hrn., Ron Mahdi-bs. Everyone I've turned on to this date likes it. Varner doesn't get much solo space but other wise a great date with interesting tunes and arrangements in a straight ahead vein. Interestingly, the Accurate website lists Candelaria as vocals, she doesn't sing on this but she does play piano.
  12. The owner of the label (Aldo Sinesi?) had been offering lps for sale over the web 3 or 4 years ago.

    Time

The Booker Little lp on Time has been my favorite Booker Little date for a long time. Part of the reason is that I have this on original vinyl, although I have picked up a cd copy. I don't usually go for trumpet led 4tet dates but this one is special to me.
  14. Thanks Hank.
  15. I heard some of Steve's show which also featured a recent interview with Levitt. The promo during the week said there were 4 lp's, was the 4th on a different label?
  16. Thanks for posting that.
  17. One turn table already qualifies you as eccentric. Two probably won't make you twice as eccentric.
  18. Another vote for HHB 830. Just like having another tape deck. Lon, I think that was a pretty good price, I paid more for mine.
  19. I stumbled onto this site from a google search for John Graas. Quite an undertaking. http://microgroove.jp/mercury/About.shtml#
  20. I bought my first mini disc player three years ago and have since bought two more (presenting the others to my two kids). I've been happy with the 3 Sony players we have. From what I understand the compression system used by minidisc players is considered inferior to that used by Ipod. Still, for a small portable I haven't had any issues with it.
  21. Guilty. Usually this happens when I am changing discs in the car and don't put the ejected cd back into the proper jewel case right away.
  22. I haven't heard Robert Lucas but I have been uniformly impressed by pretty much all the Audioquest releases I have heard. Audioquest had a sale some years ago where some of the vinyl releases were under $10, I was tempted to spring for a few but never did.
  23. Hey Wolff, if you thought the Weepin Willy was ok you should definitely keep an eye out for Mighty Sam McClain who, if memory serves, got a producers credit on Weepin Willy's date. Sam had several great releases on the Audioquest label and I am pretty sure there were vinyl releases of them (I have the cd's and can't recommend Mighty Sam strongly enough).
  24. Desert Wind is a fine date IMO, and righteously priced also (I got mine for 20% off with a Borders coupon, I think the price before discount was 9.99). I remember picking up a couple of Jacquet Cadets as cutouts in the 70's but I never saw this particular date.
  25. Ebay grading, Pete, you crack me up!
