Thanks, Jazzshrink, for posting the two Adam Rafferty discs. He's also on The New York Trio Project disc "Fifth House", a disc I keep coming back too since I got it. A couple of other guitar discs I listen to alot by lesser known artists include "Trioing" by Jonathan Kreisberg and "Meeting Standards" by Clay Moore. Both deserve wider expsoure. Can anyone reccommend any dates that showcase Allen Reuss? I only know him from the Coleman Hawkins date "Hollywood Stampede".

I agree with ztraug22 that Wes is better known because his octave and chordal solos were considered an innovation (although you can hear examples of this in Django Rheinhardt's and Charlie Christian's playing from the 40's). Interesting observation from Mike F., Grant Green was clearly past his prime. What to make of Wes Montgomery's opportunities had he lived? No doubt with a large family to care for he would have continued to record the Creed Taylor produced sound but who knows what his live gigs would have produced? Maybe Wes would have been on Freddie Hubbard's First Light instead of George Benson (they were both from Indiana, right?).

What's your local jazz station...
Tom in RI replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
WRIU, the University of RI station, features jazz 5 days a week from 7-12 (or is it 8-12?). Different jock each day. The station has a good signal through most of the state. -
Hey Jazzmoose, agreed on Metheny's work on Wish. At least 3 lives dates of this band and tour circulate and the two I have heard are pretty good.

I used to avoid Pat Metehny out of some kind of misguided bias against anything not hard bop. Lucky for me I tried Question and Answer. Since then I've enjoyed a lot of his trio efforts, still haven't warmed up to his PMG discs. As a sideman I liked his work on Marc Johnson's Sound of Summer Running alongside Bill Frisell. The date with John Scofield "I Can See Your House From Here" was a surprise for how loud andr ock influenced it is, I have it but haven't listened to it for awhile.

The auction was essentially an add for upcoming auctions. This was included in the text: SORRY NO LIST OR SHIPPING AVAILABLE FOR THIS AUCTION. THERE IS NO VIEWING. THIS IS STRICTLY AN INFORMATIONAL LISTING ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR ITEMS PICTURED IN THE AUCTION TO BE SOLD SEPERATELY. THEY WILL BE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. NO PAYPAL accepted for this auction. PAYMENT DUE IN 24 HOURS AFTER AUCTION END (YEAH RIGHT). I have seen this collection with my own two eyes, Nick is a friend of mine. Quite a bit of interesting stuff with a lot of European pressings.

I sprung for this after seeing a mention somewhere on this board. Sound is very good and I find the whole enterprise to be a success. The tunes show the benefits of some rehearsals and the musicians involved are all 1st rate. I like the pairing of Joshua Redman and Miguel Zenon. The packaging is not so hot for those, like me, who do most of their listening in the car but shouldn't be a problem for those listening at home. I hope the release is a succuess and they do it again next year.

There is an article in today's Wall Street Journal announcing that Toshiba is ready to market double sided dvd's with the new and old format to provide backwards compatibility, sorry I can't link to it. I think the jury is still out. From what I've read, the other competing dvd format has a much larger capacity. I guess one will be the Betamax of the new millenium.

JohnL, I am with you on Drift, which covers a lot of ground. I am finding myself picking up discs just because they have Matt Wilson on them. I've also picked up a couple of the Ben Allison discs which I seem to warm up to over repeated listenings. For all you Herbie Nichols Project fans, try another take on this stuff by Buell Niedlinger, Blue Chopsticks on his k2b2 records.

Jug's Christmas Song w/Tom Archia! Yeah, baby. Listening to Christmas with Houston Person on Muse at the moment. And I second the rec for the Uptown Xmas disc which I picked up from Chuck last year.

I have the Omega tape Art Pepper sides on Onyx (1st vinyl issue?) and then on the Blue Note twofer from the 70's. While I like Art Pepper alot, both of these issues have some very unpleasantly harsh moments. Were the original tape issues better? Were they considered audiophile in their day?

Hey Tonym, no need to apologize. I recognize most Christmas music falls into the novelty category, I'm sure people don't listen toMiles Davis' Blue Xmas repeatedly like they might with Kind of Blue. So, I'm not talking profound musical experience here. Still, I am driving my family crazy with this stuff. Couw, thanks for the tips, I'll check'em out.

I admit it, I am a sucker for holiday music. The Jimi Hendrix Christmas medley, James Brown Christmas (Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto), various other jazz, blues, folk or bluegrass compilations, I get sucked in, I can't help it (I have drawn the line at John Tesh). My favorite piece of Christmas music though is Charles Brown's Please Come Home For Christmas, a song so good it trancends the novelty aspect, I think. I've picked up quite a few jazz Christmas discs through the years and have seen an increase in blues and r'n'b Christmas discs the last few years. This summer I grabbed the soudtrack from Scrooged after having been on the lookout for it for a few years. Anyway, anybody have any other Christmas music favorites I should be on the lookout for?

JazzDaddy, thanks for posting the AAJ thread. I picked up several of the BeeHive releases when they were new, I was working in a record store at the time. The lps were in high quality sleeves and some came with inserts with photos on glossy paper which I thought was a nice touch. Nice productions all way round.

I don't have a lot of Moody but I am partial to some of his Argo material including Last Train From Overbrook which I have on a 70's twofer. I checked at Half.com and I see the cd issue of same is listed for $48! http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid...=1876&meta_id=2

Bill, you are my hero.

A strong second for HHB Burn-It, I've had one for a couple of years. As Lon notes, you can use computer cdr's, not just audio, which is quite a bit cheaper. Mine has a remote (I think they all do) and you just push a button on it while sitting on the couch to insert track marks. I haven't had any discs that played back with 2 seconds gaps from this (and I have distributed plenty hither and yon). Definitely my favorite toy from the last 10 years or so.

Strong second to easytree. Lots of good stuff here and searchable by genre. A couple of the more active uploaders have developed some great graphics to go along with there shows. The most windows I've had open at one time: 8.

Norman Granz Jam Sessions box set
Tom in RI replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It doesn't fit exactly but I would have liked this to also include the 1956 Metronome All Star session. Has that been out on cd? Would have made a nice bonus, unless Mosaic or someone else could gather all the Metronome sessions together. Can't think of the other magazines that sponsored All Star dates off the top of my head. -
Looks like a case of unbridled enthusiasm.

Obscure records you love which never get a mention
Tom in RI replied to David Ayers's topic in Recommendations
Keno Duke, Sense of Values on Strata East. Nothing earth shaking but a personal favorite of mine with Frank Strozier, George Coleman, Harold Mabern and Lisle Atkinson. Also, on Accurate Records a date by the Consuelo Jon Quintet called Last Sunday Morning. Featuring Consuelo Candelaria - piano, John Hazilla-dms., Billy Pierce- saxes, Tom Varner-Fr.Hrn., Ron Mahdi-bs. Everyone I've turned on to this date likes it. Varner doesn't get much solo space but other wise a great date with interesting tunes and arrangements in a straight ahead vein. Interestingly, the Accurate website lists Candelaria as vocals, she doesn't sing on this but she does play piano. -
The owner of the label (Aldo Sinesi?) had been offering lps for sale over the web 3 or 4 years ago.

The Booker Little lp on Time has been my favorite Booker Little date for a long time. Part of the reason is that I have this on original vinyl, although I have picked up a cd copy. I don't usually go for trumpet led 4tet dates but this one is special to me.

Thanks Hank.
