  1. Thanks Lon and Alexander for your comments. FWIW - I don't think the stereo version "She's Leaving Home" is too slow or draggy as many have commented in comparison to the Mono - I have heard both many times and I really prefer the speed on the stereo. In my thinking about the mono box, it occurred to me somewhat belatedly to pull out my Beatles Capitol sessions Cds since they have mono versions, granted they are not the same as the British. After comparing those to the new 2009 stereos on the first two albums, I get a sense of what the mono fans are talking about - the overall feel is that the songs rock harder in mono. On the other hand, I do also get the sense of what perhaps Lon was referring to in an earlier message, in Mono it seems to me that the vocals are up front and the instruments appear more recessed in the mix and on the stereo 2009 versions the instruments are very up front on par with the vocals. I guess you can't have it all?
  2. So does whether you like mono or stereo depend on your system? I am seeing just so many wildly divergent opinions on this issue - and I am referring to the issue of sound quality not the fact that there are different takes/versions. It seems that even the folks who like the mono box concede that a number of the albums sound better in stereo. I note that Alan Kozinn, a noted Beatle expert, in his NY Times review of the mono and stereo remasters (9/06/09) said that while he admits it is heresy, he likes the sound of the first four albums in stereo, because even though you have the panning issue, he hears so much more clearly what's going in with the vocals and instruments on the stereo versions. I picked up most of the stereo versions by default - (including the first 4) at Target because the price ($11.98)-buy 2 and get $5 off the third - put price at effectively $10/disc except for the doubles - because the mono box was so hard to get. The hard panning on the stereo versions doesn't bother me and they sound great. Not sure I want to spring for the mono box - for the cost and space limitations I have.. There has been a lot of helpful opinions by member of this board and on reviews member have posted. After sjarrell's post I am wondering if the system is a key factor. Anyone else?
  3. I read the pinned message from Jim - but I can't find any such option in the bottom left corner of the post.
  4. Tuff Gong/Island B0003359-02. CDs, cover and booklet in excellent condition. $17.00 delivered, insured to a US address.
  5. B&O stopped making the cartridges, but a company in Peekskill NY called Soundsmith has been making the B&O cartridges rather successfully for some time now beginning at $150. So replacement cartridges are available and will be available for the table I am offering.
  6. You mean cartridge? - no that has been changed many times.
  7. Not sure TTK, it's a rather simple design. Tonearm is straight except slight angle where you attach stylus. Stylus pressure is added or subtracted through the counterweight at the other end of the arm. Nothing in the owner's manual says "linear tracking" as a feature. Bottom line - I'm not sure.
  8. This turntable was purchased in 1985 for $260 with cartridge. In very good shape except that one one of the phono plug connectors has a bit of the plastic that has cracked and come off - but this does not affect sound. I have the original owner's manual, box, original purchase receipt etc. Looking for $100. If you are in NYC metro area, we could avoid shipping it and I just hand it to you.
  9. I want to say that "Monk" - not to be confused with the trio album with the same title" is, in my opinion, a very underrated Monk record. I love the tunes on it and with Frank Foster and Sonny Rollins on tenor - it's just a great record. Got the RVG reissue and I am really enjoying once again.
  10. I've always thought he bears a strong resemblance to country singer George Jones.
  11. One of my favorite singers of all time.
  12. I have read Philip Norman's "Shout" about the history of the Beatles and really loved it.
  13. thanks to everyone who is posting the reviews and their own personal observations on the stereo vs. mono releases. Might save me some money

    John Lennon

Not to keep arguing with you, but I can't tell who solos on the first video. On the second one, I am pretty convinced it is George, because he is playing a 12 string and the solo sounds like it is from a 12 string to me.

    John Lennon

well maybe - I am not sure that Lennon is synching to the solo and the cameramen for a lot of these rock shows were clueless about who they should focus on. This video would seem to confirm your suspicions, TTK: Not really - I am pretty sure that is a lip-synched performance. DId you notice there are no microphones for the singers and the electric guitars have no chords coming out of them? Also people in the audience dancing only inches away from Lennon and clapping hands and yet those sounds not picked up. Finally, this sounds exactly like the recorded version. I rest my case.

  17. Lon, Congratulations on your birthday and get well soon! Although today you don't feel well, seems like it has been a better year for you than some previous ones!!
  18. I am a big fan. Sad news indeed.
  19. Cd and booklet in mint condition. $35 dollars delivered to a US address. Insured.
  20. Stangely, this one has never done much for me. I much prefer Blue, For the Roses, Court and Spark, and some works which precede these
  21. were these missing tracks on previous cd or lp issues of Five Spot releases? I don't have my copies in front of me but I don't remember these tunes being in the repertoire.
  22. 203-327-7111 They always answer the phone during business hours. I only call during busniness hours: the problem isn't answering the phone - the problem is that the person whom I am told is handling this problem is not available to talk when I call and for whom I have left a message - does not seem to be able to get back to me.
  23. I'm a big fan too - my favorite jazz group of the 80s.
  24. J&R knows nothing about any error corrected copies. I called True BLue to ask about a replacement for a defective copy and they haven't returned my calls. It has been 4 months now since this thing came out. Is it just me or are you beginning to think that BLue Note is not intending to do anything for those of us who purchased defective copies?
