  1. I'm a major latecomer to Chico Hamilton, Gabor Szabo, and the CH albums with GS; only just learned of that hook-up after picking up the budget Japanese reissue of A Different Journey last year. Went on to pick up the Passin' Thru/Man From Two Worlds twofer. Just ordered the El Chico/Further Adventures twofer (also the BS/SN box as it was going for a steel but that's another story). Found what i've heard to be immensely enjoyable, with some tracks being more 'holy shiz!' than others but no deal breakers in there. These albums are so accessible and so tasty... THIS is the type of stuff that i would have wanted to hear when i was starting to get in to 'acoustic' jazz, and i guess better late than never.
  2. Yes indeedy on all counts. It's funny; previously i was happy just cherry picking from his new releases as they come out, but with the word that it's possible that no more is coming, i've started delving in to the back catalogue.
  3. Yeah, i think he did. From memory it was in the early to mid 2000s; looking at his discography it can't have lasted long.
  4. This interview makes it seem more ambiguous; it can still be read as the 'slowing down' will lead to a complete stop once those ESP albums come out. I've read other recent interviews where it's been more explicit that he's got recordings (i think already in the can but i can't remember) coming out on Rogue Art and ESP and then that's it. Still, quite mercurial, isn't he? I think that it's very possible that he will record again at some point. I hope so anyway, but if not, maybe he has said all that he has to say.
  5. ^^^ Looks good. Wrote up a post earlier but it got lost, looking forward to Miles Okazaki's Trickster: http://www.milesokazaki.com/albums/trickster-2016/ https://milesokazaki.bandcamp.com/album/trickster
  6. I think that 'Live and Unreleased' is the only official WR release that i don't have. The recent Legendary Live Tapes set is indeed awesome.
  7. I was an AAJ forum regular from 2009-2013. Best wishes to all that were also regulars during that time, i really enjoyed your company. Cheers.
  8. Heaps of cool stuff that i've never heard being posted in this thread. I would have been all over A Minor Forest back in the day, right up my alley.
  9. Millions Now Living and TNT from Tortoise were big for me at the time. I have a particularly fond memory of spacing out to DJed one friday night. Was interesting years later to learn of the Chicago jazz connection, Jon Herndon and Jeff Parker etc. Also had that GY!BE album with Dead Flag Blues on it... liked it but by the time i would've been getting more i was already moving on. Spiderland! One of those legendary albums that i couldn't get in to... need to have another listen at some point. Do bands like Isis and Cult of Luna fit in to the post-rock realm? I think they are more post-metal/post-hardcore or whatever, but i always kind of thought of them as being related to post-rock in a way.
  10. Yeah Shipp's output can be hard to keep up with... the trio albums are essential listening for me, i just stick to them and on average he puts out about one a year (unless there's some that i'm missing!). Haven't really explored his non-trio stuff too much; what i've heard generally hasn't really been my cup of tea (which is slightly perplexing for me as if i'm a fan of a piano player i tend to be all in on all contexts that they play in). Eisenstadt's Old Growth Forest album was definitely a bit subdued... can't gather my thoughts on it at the moment. I was less enthusiastic about it than his previous albums, but i feel like it's going to click for me on further listens and/or when i'm in the right mood for it. Been meaning to check out that new Eskelin album on Intakt. Need to get on that! Cheers.
  11. A couple of upcoming new releases that i'm looking forward to: Matthew Shipp - Piano Song: http://www.thirstyear.com/2016/12/01/matthew-shipp-trio-new-album-jan-27-2017/ Harris Eisenstadt - Recent Developments: http://songlines.com/release/recent-developments/ Shipp's trio albums are must haves for me, i find them to be immensely enjoyable. Eisenstadt is also a favourite of mine, really dig his compositions, drumming and groups.
  12. Just ordered the Dolphy set. 7 of the 11 discs are new to me so it was quite good value for the price. I'm starting to get a bit of 'box set burn out', but this is material that i've wanted for a long time.
  13. Have finally had a chance to really dig in to this set over these last few weeks. Great stuff.
  14. My copy of Vol. 22 arrived today. Have had a couple of weeks off work over the holiday season, have spent some great quality time with the family. After another busy day today, it's so nice to kick back with a beer and bask in this album. Back to work on Monday, it's going to be full on, will have to do some prep during the next few days. Life is good.

    Trio 3

It's the only one i have, but i really like Refraction - Breaking Glass with Jason Moran.
  16. Insanely hard to pick three, but off the top of my head: Masterpieces, Piano Reflections, Back to Back
  17. Weird year for me. Just felt like listening to older stuff in general. There were two clear standouts for me: Anthony Braxton - Quintet (Tristano) 2014 Taylor Ho Bynum - Enter the Plustet Those are the only new releases that i've really felt like listening to a lot this year. Many other new releases i thought were excellent on first listen (Mary Halvorson's new one especially) but somehow i just haven't felt like listening to them a lot since (or i listened to them a lot for a short period then nothing). No need to force it, i expect to revisit them in the new year and get a lot of enjoyment from them. For the sake of documenting, i thought that all of these were excellent too, but i need to spend more time with them: Harris Eisenstadt - Old Growth Forest Nate Wooley/Ken Vandermark - All Directions Home Audio One (Ken Vandermark) - What Thomas Bernard Saw Henry Threadgill - Old Locks... John Zorn/Nova Express - Andras The Claudia Quintet - Super Petite Ellery Eskelin - Trio Willisau Live Eri Yamamoto - Life Mary Halvorson - Away With You A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It From Here... (not jazz but it is a new release) Allison Miller - Otis Was a Polar Bear
  18. Thanks Lon and Ubu. I got an update today, estimated shipping end of December/early January. I can live with that, don't mind waiting as long as i know it's actually coming (unlike with a certain recent Chick Corea reissue lol).
  19. Has anyone received theirs yet? Went straight to 'temporarily out of stock' status on release date on Amazon Japan. No updates at this stage.
  20. I've liked him in anything where John Hollenbeck is the leader or co-leader, other than that i have his album Origami which i quite like. Beyond that, i've heard some stuff of his that hasn't been my cup of tea.
  21. The Taborn and the Bleckmann look really good.
  22. I have the three most recent. Deluxe is my favourite by far.
  23. Thanks for the recommendation. We Loved You and a few other albums are on Spotify; i've saved them to have a proper listen at some point. It's nice to know that i'm not the only one who feels this way about later Bud. Pretty much my thoughts exactly.
  24. Wow, thanks so much for the info guys. So stoked that Togo Brava is in there, have had my eye on that one for a while but have held off. Edit: gotta stop typing Toga Bravo.
