  1. Apparently (I haven't gone through the list) 361 box sets on sale at ImportCDs. Multiple genres. Quick ook shows lots of Bird and Trane. Bill Evans. No much out of the mainstream. Complete Wes on Riverside for $125. Not sure if that's good price, but nice set.
  2. Four weeks in NYC without a free moment. Now down to my last day, so I'm going - morning work be damned.
  3. Stitt (#208) is going, going, (gone), while Mobley (#181) lingers on. (To be fair, though, Mobley was a 7500 set issue, while Stitt was just 5000)
  4. Birthday Best, 2013!
  5. Update on Mr. Miller: Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller resigned amid controversy over the targeting of conservative groups, President Obama said. The president vowed new safeguards to ensure that such targeting is not repeated at the IRS. "Americans have a right to be angry about it, and I am angry about it," he said. 6. Okay, it's kind of a duplicate thread, so if the moderators need to delete it, I'm cool with that. I wanted to call attention to Jim Alfredson's latest project and Kickstarter campaign. Jim's taken a pretty low-key approach (in my opinion) with a thread entitled "". I read past this a few times, thinking "Yeah, I've got that John Patton album" (overlooking the "Tribute" part). Let's contribute to a worthy project. (If you need to be convinced of the worth, check out the video clips.) Direct link to Kickstarter.
  7. What would your (and your wife's) commute be? Going into the District, versus staying in NOVA or going to Maryland or (?) makes a significant difference. I've never lived in the the area, so I should leave that part of the conversation to the better-informed. Culturally, I'd have to say that I survive mainly based on the offerings in the District and rely heavily on the generally good Metro service for access to intellectual stimulation.
  8. Yes indeed.
  9. Got half a tank in the Trans Am, ready to cruise Mooney Blvd. What? Who said 'road trip'? Hey, give me that Foghat 8 track. Blackstone, watch out.
  10. Posting from my mobile. Hope this works: rtsp://v6.cache5.c.youtube.com/CjYLENy73wIaLQmAe3gOub1UlhMYESARFEIJbXYtZ29vZ2xlSARSBXdhdGNoYLLXwMXk9tOaUQw=/0/0/0/video.3gp
  11. Yes! There are paperback versions available from Jazz Record Center, order online or drop by 236 W 26th.
  12. Setting aside my beloved Russians (Anton Chekov, Leo Tolstoy) - not everyone's samovar of tea, I would acknowledge Voltaire and Vonnegut. Vonnegut = Canary in a Cathouse (1961) Welcome to the Monkey House (1968) Bagombo Snuff Box (1999) God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian (1999) Armageddon in Retrospect (2008) Look at the Birdie (2009) While Mortals Sleep (2011) Sucker's Portfolio (2013)
  13. Multiple copies of the Columbia set available at Amazon for $21.25 and up. Ship from the UK to the US for $3.99.
  14. Complete Woody Shaw Columbia Albums Collection is down to $21.27 from multiple Amazon sellers. Cheap ones come from UK, but ship to US for $3.99.
  15. Tough one, but I'd choose "Sound". (Haven't heard "Before...") Snurdy McGurdy is another nice one, and I like any duo stuff, of which there is - blessedly - much.
  16. here = here, this page...is that supposed to be so? This mistake would have been better in the Elvis Costello thread "My Aim Ain't True" I'd been "shooting at the previous Marquette thead. Three pages of useful stuff there.
  17. What's up with the paperback? Anyone seen one? The website shows "account suspended". Still Kindle and Nook versions out there. But I really want paper.

Though the material is very good, it contains a zillion alternates, which I'm not so fond of. If you're looking at, for instance, Backbreaker 1, 2, 3... and thinking "alternates", they're not. The original issues were on 78s. Since the recordings are far too long to fit one a 78 (3-minute play), they got spread across several, sequential 78s.
  19. Time to resurrect the .:. impossible birthday thread. I hope it's a great one!
  20. Time again to wish Lazaro Vega a Happy Birthday!
  21. Again, just like last week (Mingus), I was listening from work, 2:00-6:00AM. Same deejays...the guy who talked a little, intelligently and pronounced things (generally) correctly, followed by the woman who had a tougher time of it. Still, overall enjoyble. Probably tune in again when I get off work at 8:00PM.
  22. Didn't Proper also do a 4CD Wardell set? Yes. And though I don't care for Proper, the music selected isn't bad. I can't (obviously) speak to sound and production quality.
  23. Yes, King Ubu, I'm still working on the Unauthorized Masters of Jazz Wardell Gray Completer Set, every day off I get. Unfortunately, my most recent day off was 2007.
  24. There's a bunch of Firehouse Five (plus Two) stuff over at oldies.com, including some stuff in their Fantasy liquidation.
