Bless jazz and its lovers in 2013.

But have you heard the 25-bit remaster? I think you mean 24-bit; there's no such thing as a 25-bit remaster. I actually have at least one CD that says that it is a 32-bit remaster. Some German Chess CDs were also 32-bit remastered; they were released in digipaks. They sounded awful to my ears. As far as I know there are no 25-bit remasters, but maybe Bebop was kidding; it's sometimes hard to tell on the internet Yes, I was just kidding. I assume that A Lark Ascending was too. But, just in case he/she already had the 24-bit remaster, I though I'd give him/her something more to acquire.

Wait, did I miss it? Hope it is/was fantastic!

I understand that the jazz world is a big one and my mind and time are small, relatively speaking. I recognized Mr. Chaney's name, though only vaguely. So I suppose I was fortunate to have any point of reference. As I implied, what I knew/remembered of him was enough to acknowledge his death as a loss. Mr. Nessa's (implied) praise in the first post suggested that Mr. Chaney's music was potentially more valuable than my feeble memory and point of exposure (Young-Holt) had allowed me to recognize. And so I pledged to myself to investigate a bit deeper. I suppose an artist's passing is something of a wake-up call opportunity for me. I read an obituary and am inspired. Often, my recognition of the artist's value comes "too late", but I will accept that over "never". So I thank Mr. Nessa for pointing out one I may have otherwise missed. (I haven't yet had a chance to do that further exploration yet.). I do this because, frankly, Mr. Nessa has credibility. If I read in the USA Today that "jazz great xxxxxx has passed" at age 24, and it's someone I haven't heard of in my forty-plus years listening and learning, I'd be more inclined to shrug and move on. Edited to add... I'm capable of multiple, simultaneous thoughts. I can be outraged over murder, joyous about my friend's new job and interested in learning something new at the same time.

I didn't want to editorialize in my initial post, but I never did find anything worth buying at True Blue, at least at the prices they set (including sales). Nowadays, I don't buy at all, so the sale and future are not of much interest. On the other hand, it's sad to see any physical-music retailer disappear, Choice.

True Blue Music is closing down on December 30, 2012. We want to thank all of you who have supported True Blue Music and chosen it as your jazz shopping site for the past 20 years. The dramatic reduction in the release of physical jazz titles and other factors have contributed to our decision to shut down this division of Mosaic Records. For the next week, we are offering drastic discounts on our remaining inventory

Thanks. The Young-Holt stuff was enjoyable enough (if not exactly my thing) so I'll say "thanks" to Mr. Chaney. And I'll make a note to check out The Awakening.

Same guy as the pianist (same name) with Young-Holt Unlimited?

I felt kinda dumb at the post office today, buying those Forever stamps

So will the clock run into negative numbers? Your very own wikipedia reference and scorecard.

I don't rightly know you, JSngry, but I do appreciate your contributions 'round these parts. So I'll add to the chorus of "Happy Birthday".

83?! No. Must be 48. Not based on how she looks so much as...well...she's 48. 83's pretty old and she ain't.

The later, small group work with Budd Johnson is also good. (Linger Awhile, Dirty Old Men...)

I had the great pleasure to get to know Fatha Hines, just before his passing. So I'm, perhaps, biased I- biased toward every era. While his playing didn't change tremendously over the better part of six decades, the changes in setting (orchestra, small group, solo) highlighted different appealing qualities. The 1940s bands were fantastic, but at least as much for the sidemen as for the leader. Let's not forget or overlook his work with Louis Armstrong. Widely available at "bargain" prices
-
But have you heard the 25-bit remaster?
-
I'm trying to think of anyone who ot more people into jazz than Brubeck. Anyone else feel that way? Heck, he was on the cover of Time. Miles was a publicly visible personality. Duke was too. I'm not sure either was a Real Ambassador. Perhaps Louis Armstrong. In the end, wherever his roles started and ended, jazz will miss him.

I met him a couple of times at MIlls College (not when he was a student there, but as a returning alumnus). Nice guy. I enjoyed his music, but I'll miss his blindfold tests/listening comments too.
