  1. Sorry to hear about your Uncle. Hopefully you were still able to enjoy your birthday - otherwise, you'll just have to enjoy the remaing 364 days this year. I've gotten to be pretty much on the airport to Metro shuffle. (I do Dulles and the Metro 5A, but same thing, conceptually.) The Metro is still one of the good things about the DC area. It works.
  2. In general, I head to Little Five Points for: Moods Music, 1131 Euclid Criminal Records, 1154 Euclid Wax n' Facts, 432 Moreland Satellite, 447 Moreland (all within about a block) Wuxtry, 2096 N Decatur Decatur CD is pretty good, if you're near Decatur. 356 West Ponce de Leon

I think of it this way, I would definitely rather hear bassoon in jazz than bagpipes (particularly by a guy who wasn't really in control of the instrument) and I don't really want to hear bassoon in jazz. Just saying... I'm with you on the bassoon. Oboe, on the other hand.... I buried my old Pacific Jazz stuff long ago.

You could always sample the MP3s at Amazon or iTunes. Worst case, it's not like this is hugely hard to find, if you redecide.

Agree on this part. Perhaps I'm just too (something), but I really tire quickly listening to Western music on non-chromatic instruments. So when Harley's substituting a major scale tone (say a third), when I minor scale tone is in the composed melody, it's cringe and flee time.

Harley gets resurrected every few years, for better or worse. Scotch and Soul is part of the Courage box set http://www.amazon.com/Courage-Atlantic-Recordings-Rufus-Harley/dp/B000PBSPGK/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1331838695&sr=1-1

  8. Have a happy one, Berigan.
  9. Happiest of the happies, Free For All!
  10. On your laptop? Wow, I'm lucky to get them onto my desktop. Do women get some equivalent of the "enhancement" ads that I get? If so, these women look like repeat customers.
  11. Politics. Never, unless I find something to post that might be a little controversial, then I'll drop by to post. And split.
  12. I certainly miss "Joe". All the best, wherever you are.
  13. Anyone want to include Bird? I think I would.
  14. Monk, Mingus, Ornette, Golson would be my first-tier. Among those I usually recognize, Benny Carter. As a collective effort (as opposed to a single composer, I find the head arrangements for the Basie band (classic era) to be distinctive. Anyone want to include Bird? I think I would.
  15. I can't do media on my computer (audio, video). Is this from his Jazz Alley gig last week in Seattle? I caught most on one set. Never mind. I got the link open. Same tour stop, but in the Pacific Lutheran University radio studio.
  16. Yep. I see a gun, I run.
  17. Chester NJ? I had a bit of a scare there. I'd had a job - once upon a time - Chester PA. Not a place I'd want to live. But yes, all my travel is business. Mostly USA, but could be anywhere: Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Kyrgystan, Russia, Bolivia, Bhutan...Azerbaijan and Georgia.
  18. This is a second-generation inspired thread - BigAl's birthday thread and BigAl's "Opportunity to Say Thanks". I travel and I know a few other board members do too. If you're going somewhere or interested in meeting up with someone who's "just passin' thru", post here. Week of March 4, 2012 - Washington, DC USA Weeks of March 11 and 18, 2012 - Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Week of March 25, 2012 - San Francisco/Oakland, California, USA Weeks of April 1, 8 and 15, 2012 - Torrance, California, USA Week of April 22, 2012 - Baku, Azerbaijan
  19. Just curious: anyone date back to Jazz Central Station or the rec.music (.bluenote) list, circa 1990? Yeah, I'm a geezer.
  20. I have the (sometimes) good fortune to travel, but the misfortune of a 100-plus-hour a week job. If work ever provides any breathing room I hope to meet a few more of you and have you hip me to the local scene. Until then, I'm glad that Jim and Organissimo have provided this alternative meeting space.
  21. If you can do vinyl, if I recall correctly, it's got about three or four additional, lengthy cuts. Little Niles, Lady J...?
  22. Big birthday wishes, Big Al
  23. Merrill? Humes? Forrest? Ward? O'Connell? Reddy? I'm assuming it's one of the first two. Reaching back into my memory banks, let's see if jazzbo surprises us with someone most of us probably never heard.
  24. I'm not a vocal guy. I'm hard-pressed to list three vocalists I can tolerate, much less enjoy*. That said, I do like Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure and Jimmy Rushing. I'd call them all horn-like. * No acounting for taste, eh?
