Sad deal Rob! Man, we saw a lot of great shows at the Velvet...sorry to see it go. Fred and a large cast of characters poured their heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears and money into the place and to see it shut down because at least one of the sons doesn't have a clue is very sad. I believe at the time of Fred's passing there may have been only a couple more years on the lease so who knows even if they had re-opened, how long it would have lasted. I feel kind of bad for the grandaughters as they worked hard to keep it running and at least the handful of times I was there while they were running it, it had a nice vibe. I hope to make the show this coming Friday night to see what's happening down the road with the new coalition. m~

I photographed the new music building dedication including performances by Bill Cosby, Stevie Wonder, lots of Oberlin alumni including James McBride, Marcus Belgrave, Gary Bartz, Robin Eubanks, Stanley Cowell and others for Downbeat. Sadly Wendell Logan, the man that started the school decades ago passed away just a couple months after the ribbon cutting. On the bright side; my good friend and founder/owner of beehive records donated his massive collection to the university. Having seen much of it; they should be happy to have it. Regarding the exhibit by Kuchirchuk; it was very nice. About a dozen or so very nice images...most of them shot at one Cleveland jazz club....nice stuff. m~

I was there for 5 days of it. The fest was nice...rather hot in the Abrons Art Center and NYC in general and the death of Fred was a real downer. I was invited to exhibit a handful of photographs at the venue which was cool. Snuck out one night to catch the Rick Germanson Quintet @ Smalls.... with Eric Alexander, Gerald Cannon, Joe Farnsworth, Duane Eubanks and Germanson on piano. Andy Bey was in the house and came up and sang one tune. Also caught a couple nice photo exhibits, one at MOMA and one at a gallery I don't recall the name. m~

I hope it's not the "abortion" he presented to folks in Chicago a couple years ago....with basically the same line-up. To date, still the only jazz performance I've ever walk out of. I'd stay away from that one:-)

Robert still is a bad ass drummer in Chicago...great guy!!!

I've met Curtis several times and saw him play as recently as 6-8 months ago. Playing is ok but as Free says...he's still Curtis...so I say...go for it!!! Very nice guy by the way. I saw him not too long before his wife passed away, he mentioned that she was ill....yet still wonderful and friendly. m~

Heard and photographed them both just one time. Enjoyed both shows...sad to see them go:-)

I personally liked the entire series. I spoke to a couple folks that live in NOLA, a photographer that thought it was pretty good but not completely factual (not that it was supposed to be) and the wonderful tenor player Kidd Jordan just last week. He said he had not watched it but most of his friends/family that had seen it were luke warm on it at best. I still thought it was entertaining, which I'm sure the producers were hoping for. m~

I'll be at the festival...give me a yell if you make it in. Will be in Chicago tomorrow...wanna catch David Honeyboy Edwards!!!

John is from Indy. I met him once, tried to get him back here for my great day in Indy photo but he's typically in europe in June. I think he died of cancer. Very nice guy; great player. I heard the news from another Indy player...drummer Benny Barth. m~

Actually Johnny Cash flipping the bird came after Jim told Johnny "say hello to the warden" or something along those lines. He signed a copy of this book for me. He was a colorful guy to say the least and had a great eye!

The two on Beehive are nice. Jim Neumann who produced these sessions thought a lot of Sal. m~

Us Five with Lovano/Esperanza Spalding on Friday.....Pat Martino Organ Trio on Sunday and I'm sure something in between. m~

I'll ask Bobby this weekend if Sonny has any intentions of firing him anytime soon. m~
