  1. I spoke with Wayne (or Mr. Segal) on the phone a few weeks back. A very, very, nice man. And a gentleman. More generally, we actually have an handful of possibilities brewing for Chicago. Regardless of where we end up playing, (and Joe's would be cool), thank you for your very thoughtful comments to Wayne. greg ← If he was very, very nice, it was probably Wayne!!!
  2. Jim, Randy, Joe & Greg: I was at the Jazz Showcase, photographing the past three nights "afterfest" sessions and what did I see sitting on the counter while talking to Joe and Wayne Segal?????? A copy of your new cd!!! Wayne said he received it as you guys may want to play Joe's Bebop Cafe. I gave Wayne the lowdown on the band and told him to really consider having you guys play. He told me he hadn't played it yet as they have been really busy but he swore he would give it a good listen. I'll keep bugging him about it! Good luck! Mark
  3. Sup???......Holla...... Makes me want to run right out and pick it up! m~
  4. I'm just back form the Chicago Jazz Fest this morning where Slide Hampton played several show as did his nephew (Pharez Whitted). I talked with a few of Slide's friends last night at the Jazz Showcase and was told that Pookie's wife has actually been ill and Pookie has been doing quite well although he has battled cancer for some time. Pookie was the regular tenor player with the Hampton Sisters band (Slide's sisters) and a regular around here for a zillion years. Very good player and a marvelous human being. I had many conversions with him over the past few years; very sad to see him pass away, a very big loss for the Indianapolis commmunity and jazz as well. I have included an image I made of Pookie in the not too distant past! m~
  5. Don't know if this is easily available in the States but I scored my copy courtesy of Brownie, and I just gave it another listen. Unlike Ubu, I prefer Houston Person over Ricky Ford, in general, but there is certainly nothing wrong with Ford's work here. As far as Person goes, ubu, have you heard any of his Highnote CDs? I do feel that Houston has grown and matured wonderfully and any of the Highnote CDs should be heard for a nice glimpse of where he is at. I saw him last winter in Fort Lauderdale and it was one of the best shows I've seen in south Florida. I have no possible idea why you think of him as "second rate" but if you've only heard his Prestige-era funky organ side, you definitely haven't heard the best of Houston Person. ← ....agree with Dan regarding Person's Highnote work; wonderful! m~
  6. I'm sure we will get this sorted out as we usually do but I'm happy other nations have stepped forward with their offers!!! I'm sure it's very much appreciated by everyone in the US, especially myself......so a big "Thank You" to all! m~
  7. looking forward to spending time with you in chicago. ← I think I remember you looking like this!
  8. I sure this will get the oil/gas flowing again!
  9. I love Santa Fe as well; usually visit every other year or so. I was out there several years ago on the day they opened the Georiga O'Keefe Museum and met Gene Hackman! Also spent the day before rafting on the Rio Grande, which was much fun! I was also out there when 9/11 happened and ended up driving back to Indy when my visit was over.....very eerie time. I'll drop you a line when I visit next! Mark
  10. Mine doesn't really care but she thinks it's freaky when I tell her I'm going to hang out with someone I met here (abductors are know to hang on jazz boards). I've seen shows with Chuck, EJP626, Jazzshrink, Larry Kart, Uncle Skid, Rachel, Ghost, Jazz Messenger; stayed at Sal's house several times, am meeting JazzKrow and David Gitin in Monterey next month, gone boating with JazzTropic and this kinda freaks her.......I think she thinks I'll be abducted by some Jazz stalker???? When I told her I was going boating with JazzTropic although I had never met him face to face; she just knew I would end up as fish food on the bottom of the ocean!
  11. [i guess he hasn’t noticed that a) his team has the best record in baseball right now and b) ....they actually have the best record in the AL and the second best in baseball. They are also getting beat in the 7th inning today. The Northside Cubs are being one-hit in the eighth....poor hapless Cubbies!
  12. Mark! You really aren't kidding? ← I couldn't believe my eyes!!!
  13. I'll be attending the Monterey Jazz Fest from 9/16-18 and will be in San Francisco from Monday 9/19-21. If any of you are around and want to hang for a bit, I'm up for it! Thanks! m~
  14. $2.57 when I went out to lunch, $3.19 on the way back.......and before you ask, I wasn't gone more that 45 minutes!!!
  15. This is certainly a disaster.....I hope the people that bitched about the U.S. not helping in some recent events are lining up to lend a hand. m~
  16. ...it's Jerry Gonzales! (Trumpet/Congas)
  17. I spoke to Fathead about this DVD a while back. He told me Tina was very underrated (and fun to play with)!!!........no kidding! Mark
  18. Their voice mail and flyers always say 4:00, 8:00 and 10:00. They will start at 4:30, 8:30 and 10:30!!!! Joe always starts the shows 30 minutes after he says he will......always!!!! Mark
  19. ....I love Jimmy's playing!
  20. .....that Chuck's a peach!
  21. ....I guess it's only Jazzshrink, Sal, Jim and myself at the festival this weekend; should have lots of leg room!!! The Jazz Showcase will have their usual "AfterFest" hosted by Ira Sullivan. Hot House and Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge will have theirs as well....long, crazy extended weekend of jazz . m~
  22. Just so you're not hangin' out here without a response ..... I did not make this festival as I'm hundreds of miles away but had I been closer, I most surely would have! Sorry 'bout your finger.....beer will do that to you! m~
  23. That's actually what we're planning on doing... hopefully this week. I love me some Chi-town anywho and it would be a good excuse to drive there. Wanna go? ← Jim, I'll be there from this Friday morning through Monday morning (Chicago Jazz Festival), as will Jazzshrink and Sal. If you think you can get into town, pm me and I'll give you my cell number. m~
  24. If you haven't seen McPherson, he's a bad, bad man!!!
