  1. freeform, where would you put The Kicker? One of my favorites.
  2. I know what you mean...when Welk was on, time seemed to slow to a crawl.
  3. If only they would think about not offending the people who just want to get the album.
  4. WTF??? Who the Hell is that, Paul Whiteman?
  5. I Never understood why. The rhythms on that are too static for my taste. I'm an Illusions and Blythe Spirit man myself. Same here. When it comes to Blythe, I'll always keep my Illusions.
  6. I like 'em both (a lot) but I think I'm a bigger fan of Golson.
  7. Coming out on DVD! July 31 About time! I'm looking forward to that---I've been waiting for a DVD release of The Big Steal for many a year. A fun film that just never lets up. BTW, I'd hardly call Laura "underrated" by any definition. I assure you, it's considered one of the undisputed classics of 40's cinema in the U.S. Actually, another personal favorite is "Crime Wave," a punchy little Andre de Toth B-movie from the early 50's with Sterling Hayden and great location shooting. I'm pleased to see that it's going to be released on DVD in the same box featuring The Big Steal. Nice.
  8. I just happened to be playing Lookin' Good a few days ago, and thinking how this ain't such a bad world after all, that has such albums in it.
  9. I agree. Put me down, also, as a fan of Six Views. A nice record.
  10. Always knew the more famous of their songs from various Nuggets-type compilations. Was never sure if that first album was worth buying. Man, the summary of Roky's life was a frigging horror story! Thanks for that, Kalo.
  11. "Now junior, be-HAVE yourself!"
  12. In some ways, it almost lives up to The Rockford Files.
  13. I saw that on the big screen when it came out. Gotta admit, it didn't do much for me.
  14. You are so 100% right! In fact, any OJC with "Golson" in the title is well worth it. Got them all in my Curtis Fuller section. They are, indeed, wonderful.
  15. Actually, I think discs 1 & 2 are my favorites.
  16. Anyone else pick up the new Criterion Third Man?
  17. On the other hand, Dan has a very good point. ( )
  18. Hit 'em with some Ellington sooner or later. (1940-42 Blanton/Webster band, Such Sweet Thunder, Fargo, Blues In Orbit, and Piano Reflections come to mind, but it's all good.) Don't forget the Mobley and Tina Brooks. Serge Chaloff (Blue Serge) and Charlie Rouse (Soul Mates) are also good choices for the jazz-indifferent. And have you heard? Everybody digs Bill Evans!
  19. Sad, but not surprising.
  20. I've been meaning to get this album for some time. This may be the extra bump I need...
  21. Since I consider the earlier Mosaic Giuffre box, the complete Capitol/Atlantic, to be a gem, I must agree. I suggested a Complete Verve Jimmy Giuffre Sessions box (and also a Complete Verve Lee Konitz Sessions box) to Mosaic a couple of years ago and they said they were interested - but that was all. I suspect Verve has not been terribly cooperative.
  22. Yes, you're starting to make me feel really lucky! I feel really, really lucky, then. I got mine in a cut-out bin at the music store across the street from where I work! I long ago became resigned to the fact that if I found a good album for ten cents somewhere, you'd tell me that you got it for free, and if I found a good album for free, you would then tell me, "Hey, some guy PAYED me to take it off his hands!"
  23. Good advice for just about any decent album.
  24. Let me put it this way: I've already got four of the albums on this set, and I still want the damn thing so much I can taste it!
  25. Since I consider the earlier Mosaic Giuffre box, the complete Capitol/Atlantic, to be a gem, I must agree.
