  1. I've heard the one with Zoot, but not the two Hickory House volumes. Am curious. I used to lack a lot of Art Blakey and Horace Silver BN's, but I've rectified that in the past few years...
  2. And here I am, languishing in the 176-225 slot.
  3. Interesting that Pekar is still writing jazz articles at such a late date.
  4. I remember that. Gas prices were painful in the early 80's; then, *bing!*, I move to Allston and don't need a car anymore and instantly gas prices go down.
  5. Well, F/X has The Shield. But they are another cable channel, not a network. Whenever networks get anything good lately, they make sure to kill it after only one season or less. Freaks & Geeks, The Job, Undeclared... The networks are a joke.
  6. "The Chronicles of Bert Kling"
  7. That's what I was thinking of.
  8. I HAVE killed for two-fift-----uh, never mind.
  9. I just don't like jazz vocals that are like Chet Baker.
  10. Since it's backordered everywhere, I just physically bought a copy at a store (Amoeba)----very nice to just go out, buy a CD, bring it home, play it, and love it. I'm just old-fashioned, I guess.
  11. You are making me very sad.
  12. That's right! He was Sisko's dad! Ran a New Orleans restaurant. RIP.
  13. She was fine! I don't think she appeared in any other films. Are you saying that chicks don't dig bald, bespectacled guitarists? As a bald, bespectacled guitarist, I resemble that. I mean resent that. ← Let me amend that: If she had good musical taste she would have gone for Jim Hall.
  14. Well it's no Constantinople, but...
  15. Would I go to see people in a zoo? Only if I were a Martian. Besides, I can feel like I'm IN a human zoo whenever I take public transportation.
  16. Anything like At Swim Two Birds?

    Is there a baritone clarinet?
  18. Sounds better than leftover chicken.
  19. He also played hot young jazz guitarist Steve Dallas in "Sweet Smell of Success" where he got on the wrong side of Burt Lancaster's J.J. Hunsecker. ← I always thought that Milner was the weak link in The Sweet Smell of Success, which is one of my favorite movies. Not least because of the fact that he replaces Jim Hall in the Chico Hamilton band (visually, at least), denying Hall his rightful niche in cinema history! ← But the young chick in Sweet Smell, Hunsecker's sister, never would have gone for Jim Hall!
  20. Yes, but that lawsuit was real. The Selmer case is satire. Check the other "news" on the site ← Everyone's copying The Onion nowadays....
  21. Glad I've already got it. It's a good one. Did anyone hear Anita O'Day on Fresh Air? Kind of disturbing; she came off as quite obnoxious.
  22. No, I haven't. I heard that Christopher Walken is wasted in it, which, if true, is bad news.
  23. I saw 40 Year Old Virgin yesterday. Surprisingly good. I saw it for three reasons: Apatow (one of the producers of Freaks and Geeks); Steve Carell of course; and Seth Rogen (actor from Freak and Geeks). Still, my expectations were muted, to say the least. Heretofore strictly a character actor, Carell needed a strong vehicle if he was going to pull off playing lead, and this movie provided that. It's a movie that rarely stops to admire its own cleverness, but moves right along, with plently of fast, funny (and needless to say, raunchy) dialog. Plus, it's got Catherine Keener. I recommend it.
