  1. SF sure is COMPACT, though, compared with most cities. Those are interesting, and certainly understandable, reasons. So many places are great to visit but may not be your cup of tea to live in. Living in a place month after month, year after year, is a whole different prospect. For instance: Personally I find Boston to be a much better city to live in/near than SF. But I'm hear and stuck with it, so I might as well make the best of it. Give me a city (or big town) with good bookstores, four real seasons, and the kind of cultural resources brought in by a nearby college or university, and I'm a happy guy.
  2. Oh, man----Rooster, you've GOT to get the Gerald Wilson! You would just love it, I know you would! (Well, most of it.) Seriously, I think the only Mosaic I bought without some familiarity with the music/artist involved was maybe the Sam Rivers. Even with Bud Shank I'd heard some of his work on a few of the West Coast Classics re-issues.
  3. All I can say is: You've gotta start getting some Selects!!!!
  4. What did you dislike so much about Portland, J? I visited it a few times 2-3 years ago and liked the town just fine.
  5. The recently deceased Benny Carter adjusted to bop magnificently I think.
  6. it has recently (last week) been reissued in the Verve LPR series. Hoo-boy! I saw it just today when I went to buy the Serenade To A Soul Sister and Black Fire RVG's. Grabbed it! Very nice album; and it may be a digipak, but at least they didn't put that "Don't Copy" crap on the back cover. I was WRONG----they DID put an anti-piracy badge on the back. It was hidden behind the gold, stick-on obi-strip thing. Still a good album, though.

  8. I've never seen it either.
  9. True Blue, Hi Voltage, and Basra are very welcome additions to the RVG line-up.
  10. Didn't he do that "Wake me up before you go, girl" piece of refuse?
  11. William Tenn rules! "The Liberation of Earth" "Venus and the Seven Sexes" "Down Among the Dead Men" Oh yeah.
  12. check Kulu's post up above Whoops!
  13. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dexter Gordon. I'd vote for him because though there are many names that recorded more albums for BN, few can claim his consistancy, and there's a virtual consensus that Dex's Blue Note stuff is his creative apex. Having said that, I'll quickly and freely admit that a very good case can be made for Horace Silver on similar grounds, and Sonny Clark did most of his best albums for Blue Note, then there's Herbie Nichols and Sidney Bechet. ...And God knows, anyone who wants to say Morgan, Mobley, Turrentine, Henderson, Hill or several others, I'm not going to argue.
  14. Can't wait for this bunch to ship! Black Fire and Serenade are musts for me, but I'll probably get Doin' Alright and Sixth Sense sooner or later as well.
  15. Oh yes!! (I voted for the Django though.)
  16. Maybe Benny Golson and Curtis Fuller could do a cooking jazz version of the old Spiderman theme song.
  17. I was afraid someone would ask for a picture. Here it is, from my scanner to you. Thanks!
  18. YES. Yes it does. (But you're asking the choir if singing hymns is a good idea.)
  19. There goes the kid's college. (Just a joke, folks.)
  20. Damn. How many days was it, from the time you placed your order with Mosaic, till you received the goods? What do you think of the sound quality of the Vee Jay sets? Answers, (for me): Four days, and Excellent. They sound great to me, but I'm not the most audiophile kid on the block.
  21. I used to watch this a lot with my grandfather. He would sometimes explain stuff I didn't get. Whatever happened to Flip Wilson?
  22. Yikes. Fratricide, patricide, and matricide. A homicide triple-crown. This boy has "issues."
  23. He owns a ranch because he's rich as hell. I believe that if you're a super-rich actor or "journalist" it's some sort of law that you have to buy a ranch.
