Not the first time that has happened on a Blue Note reissue. The RVG of Midnight Blue gives the recording date as April 21, 1967 – obviously a leftover from the RVG of The Real McCoy which was in the same batch. Yikes!!! PROOFREADER, please!

John Patton Select and Gerry Mulligan Mosaic

I'm sure any of us would be willing to proofread for Blue Note for a reasonable rate of payment, am I right?

John Patton Select and Gerry Mulligan Mosaic

Is the Mulligan the Concert Jazz Band? (I hope.) -
I went with Vic.

What is he singing on this album besides "Summertime"? "Anything Goes"? "All the Things You Are"? I wouldn't pay to hear his renditions of such songs, but I'd be kind of curious...you know, in much the same way that you might be curious to see a real, live train wreck.

Universal Music to Cut CD Prices to Under $13

Cheap Verves...cheap Verves...cheap Verves........ Uh, sorry, I kind of zoned out there. -
Yeah, Our Thing is my favorite Henderson Blue Note, with Inner Urge right up there. But the RVG has made a difference to me, I must admit. It's one of those RVG's with a quite noticeable sound difference---more "sparkle" than the old CD (pardon me for getting too technical). It's made my ears sit up and take notice anyway, as the album is moving right up on my list of favorite Hendersons. Much bigger difference with MFJ than with Adam's Apple or even SFTNL, though they both sound good to me. I'm sure this difference, which I hear as an improvement, is going to be castigated by some, but hey, we don't all have the original 60's vinyl release. Bottom line, Dan---this is the perfect time to give MFJ another chance, if you care to spring for it.

That's right, he did----thought Van Gelder was cheapening his name or some such. Guess that lets him off. And Ted Gioia would probably be a better candidate for West Coast Jazz liners. OK, that's it, they should get Kevin Lowenthal.

Blumenthal does seem to be writing them while half-asleep. It seems a little late for a replacement, but I'd nominate Gary Giddins or Ted Gioia.

Anyone seen the Mobley vinyl box
BruceH replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've been seeing a new vinyl release of Mobley's Message, but the cost is prohibitive. -
Obscure album covers, by well-known artists
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
Say what you will about the cover, but I hope that Duke Pearson album is on the Select. BTW, I've seen that "Tune In, Turn On" Golson album dirt cheap at various used stores from time to time. Apparently not much demand for it. -
Sounds like something I won't be buying!

Favorite "underrated" movies with Jimmy Stewart
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
How many of his western movies have you seen? Some of them are among his best work as an actor. I'd particularly recommend Naked Spur, Bend of the River, and Winchester '73. If you really can't stand westerns then just see Winchester '73, which everyone should see once. Flight of the Phoenix is probably his last decent movie, though it's a bit on the long side. Magic Town (1947) is a good idea that's handled poorly, but is worth a rental. Stewart's appearence in the second Thin Man movie, After the Thin Man, is worth the price of admission. And if you haven't seen Shop Around the Corner (1940), by all means, give it a look. -
Gotta go with DrJ on the above Thad Jones cover---a truly great one!

Need I say it? ...Adams Apple, Mode For Joe, Search For the New Land I'm going to try listening to the releases immediatly before and after these by each artist. I may make that my new rule with RVG's. B)

Promises, promises... -
I'm with you, except that I'm gonna wait on the Jack Johnson box.

Actually, Free For All, I think not. My understanding is that the Rollins' "Alfie" is more in the nature music-inspired-by-themes-from-the-movie, although I'll have to consult the liners to be 100% sure. Not that it matters to me one bit. Come to think of it, Walt Dickerson's "Patch of Blue" album is the same deal, which is why it's called "Impressions of..."

The Sonny Rollins music for Alfie. (One of my favorite Rollins' albums actually.) Vibes' icon. I rather like some of the stuff on the Metropolitan and That Thing You Do soundtracks. I like a lot of the things already mentioned in this thread, but just have to give a huge thumbs-up for Bernard Herrman. Yaye!!

Just saw this Friday and liked it a lot. Swinging back and forth between actors playing Harvey & co. and showing the real people worked far better than one would expect. Perhaps if you've read the comic, you've already seen Pekar drawn by different people, so having the same guy look different is no big deal. Although my wife liked it too, and she's never read any issues of the comic. I thought Giamatti was damn near brilliant; he had the body language and everything down to a T. While I haven't seen everything he's done, this has got to be one of his best performances. I'd also have to say that while having read the comic naturally helps, I don't think you NEED to have read it at all to enjoy the film. Which means it has the potential to reach a (relatively) wide audience. Be interesting to see if it does. It's been selling out here in SF, but of course that means nothing. And hey, it's got jazz, and jazz collecting in it, so all you board-members GO SEE IT!

Thanks to this sale, I got Shorter's "Schizophrenia" and Hancock's "The Prisoner," both of which I'd been kind of meaning to pick up for a long time (especially the Shorter).

I'm sweatin' bullets...I told the wife I was going to break down and order a set due to the sale, but I'd just get a small one. Any chance that the Capitol Jazz set, the Complete Savoy/Dial Parker set and four RVGs will come in a reeeeeal small box? I am so in the same boat as you guys. The last time I ordered more than one Mosaic, my wife found them and I thought I going to be summarily executed. We recently saw American Splendor and there were a couple of scenes that cut uncomfortably close to the bone: At one point Pekar says record collecting is like an addiction (jab from the wife). Later, Pekar's wife is packing some of his 78's to sell and he franticly stops her, saying, "No, not the 78's; they're important; you can't get rid of any of the IMPORTANT stuff." Brabner replies, "ALL your stuff is 'important'---I don't have any room here!" More jabs from my wife. One thing's for sure----hiding new purchases from your wife and discreetly folding them into your home collection is an art, and like any art it takes time to master. We'll get it right eventually.
